Step It Up is a single by the K-Pop girl group Mi•Mi, serving as the second single from Mi•Mi's third and final studio album, When I Grow Up. Apart of a 4 song collection on the album where each member of the group takes the lead and reintroduces themselves as a solo act, Step It Up is DAENA's introduction. Once considered by SM Entertainment to be removed from the girl group due to a back injury that hindered her performance, DAENA is a powerhouse vocalist who never fails to brings the heat in past Mi•Mi songs like Chairs. A born diva, Step It Up is the perfect song to summarize the ups and downs that she's faced during her expeirence in the popular girl group. Produced by R&B/soul producer DrewWB, the song was released on February 18th, 2021, a month after the release of the album. Step It Up is a mid-tempo K-R&B song with heavy soul and funk elements. One of the sassier takes from the album, Mi•Mi turns it up a notch with the bossy single.
"One of the biggest goals for this album was saying farewell as a group while also reintroducing each other as solo acts. We wanted 4 significant songs that brought each girl's growth and personality to the focus. Step It Up is the statement I wanted to make." Says DAENA in her explanation of the song. "Originally recorded for my own solo album, once we circled back to completing When I Grow Up, I just knew that this song had to be included. Step It Up is so bold with blaring horns, the lyrics giving diva all the way."
"The time I spent in Mi•Mi was not the easiest. For the longest, I had convinced myself that I was the background and it was impossible for me to stamp my name in this world. The biggest thing I learned from my time in Mi•Mi is that no matter what I'm doing, I need to give it my all. There should never be a day where I'm giving less than 100% and that's just the bare minimum. From the first album to the last, Mi•Mi always knew how to bring it. No matter how good you thought we were, we stepped it up every chance we got. I knew how to do that as a group but I did not know how to do that for myself. Mi•Mi taught me how and it made me the woman I am today."
