NO EXCUSES is a TRACK by the K-Pop girl group Mi•Mi, serving as the third single from Mi•Mi's third and final studio album, When I Grow Up. Apart of a 4 song collection on the album where each member of the group takes the lead and reintroduces themselves as a solo act, NO EXCUSES is Miki Lee's introduction. Since their debut, Miki Lee has been the bad girl of the group, her catchy raps and rebellious personality making her one of the most popular members of Mi•Mi. Oddly, the same qualities that made her the bias of many Mi•Mi fans ended up creating tension between Miki Lee and Mi•Mi's former label SM Entertainment.
Thanks to her raunchy lyrics and outspoken character, Miki Lee was told "no" more times than she could count during her time in Mi•Mi. She often found herself discouraged but never let up, going as far as to leak her very own mixtape in 2017. The project How To Get Em Heated managed to give fans a taste of the kind of music Miki Lee wants to make when unrestricted and uncensored and NO EXCUSES definitely feels like the follow-up. Produced by Hip Hop producer FancyÑ, the song was released on April 4th, 2021, 3 months after the release of the album. NO EXCUSES is a hard-hitting K-Rap track built around a sample of the classic song “If I Were a Rich Man,” where the 1964 musical’s main character imagines an escape from the dreary reality of life as a working-class Jew in early-20th-century Russia. Miki Lee hops on the track to encourage, her fans, her group, and herself to not make excuses even when the powers that be are holding you back. On the remix, she enlists the elusive female rapper Liyah for a verse.
"For the first time, I felt like I was being myself on a track." Miki Lee says on her experience of making music with no rules for the first time. "I realized that I was using censorship as an excuse to hold myself back. No Excuses was written to declare that I don't need to make those excuses anymore. I can't make any because now, all of my obstacles are out of my way. There's nothing left to do but shine."
