I love them.Gene Hoglan is brilliant, Chuck Schuldiner was evil embodied by an amazing and intelligent person. Not only did they technically invent death metal but they also helped invent progressive death metal.Any fans?If you don't like them then check out anything after Leprosy because it's less overbearing but if you're a fan of heavier stuff then Scream Bloody Gore and Leprosysy are perfect. My favorite song by them is probably Crystal Mountain.

Death are that rare band: a death metal band that actually still interests me. Unlike many of their contemporaries such as Cannibal Corpse, they just don't sound bland and uninspiring, they have a certain hard to describe atmosphere going on.
Although the idea that Chuck was evil is quite lolworthy. To quote the man himself: "Yeah, I'm not a Satanist and I definitely don't put that into our music. No purpose. I was really young when the band first started out. I was never really into writing Satanic lyrics at all, personally. We did write gore lyrics, but it was more like kind of tongue-in-cheek, horror-movie type level. Nothing like encouraging people to go out and hurt themselves or anything stupid like that. It's pure fantasy-movie type, scary stuff. And then, I just really got into writing about reality, which is what we all have to deal with."
Personally find that Human, Individual Thought Patterns & Symbolic were their best recordings. |

Incredible band, Chuck Schuldiner was a genius, and he alwasys had an amazing band behind him, (Steve DiGiorgio, Gene Hoglan, Sean Reinert, Paul Masdival, etc.)
Human and Individual Thought Pattern are (among) the best death metal albums ever made. |

Oh hell yes. Chuck is undeniably the best death metal musician of any sort that ever lived. Human is my favorite, but Symbolic cuts it pretty close. Big fan of Leprosy, not so much Scream Bloody Gore. I wish they were still around (R.I.P. Chuck), cause most death metal bands these days aren't doing anything interesting or original. Also, Death added some flair to their music, so it wasn't just down-tuned vibrato guitars and blast beats 24/7.

DEATH were great, one of the best death metal bands ever imo. My favorites are the demos/MANTAS recordings and the "Scream Bloody Gore" LP. I'm not all that familiar with the last couple of albums, so perhaps I need to remedy that.

Great band. I do not have a favourite, as I love every album. |
