Shiva is a single by female rapper Sarojini "Lotus" Lui. The song was produced by production duo Flame 1&2 with the help of Yasmine Kiambang. Written by Lotus, the song has been 6 years in the making, with its first verse being created and recorded all the way back in 2016 during the first sessions of her second studio album MUDPIE. The song was released August 19th, 2022 by Songs To Live And Die By with additional promotion from Dahlhouse Entertainment. The track is planned to be the last single before the release of her long-awaited album, MUDPIE.
Musically, SHIVA is a Hip Hop record with elements of South Asian Hip Hop which is a term used to describe music and culture that combines the influence of hip hop and the Indian subcontinent. The beat consists of a Tabla hand played by Southeast Asian artist Yasmine Kiambang with a classic Hip Hop Trap bassline and drum pattern from the uptempo production duo Flame 1&2. This creates a bouncy sound as Lotus raps lively throughout the song. Lyrically, the theme of the song is the God of Destruction, Shiva, who is the Supreme Being in Shaivism, one of the major traditions within Hinduism. Lotus also makes many references to Buddhist philosophies throughout the song of which she is an active practitioner. The song serves as an interesting mix of South Asian religious concepts. Hinduism and Buddhism share many similarities but have historically conflicted with each other, causing a civil war throughout India in the late 20th century. Since then, Buddhism has been far less popular in India than Hindu beliefs but still survives in many Asian countries where Hinduism and Buddhism manage to coexist in peace and share many religious sites like the Swayambhunath, Bodh Gaya, Boudhanath, Mount Kailash, Ellora Caves and more.
