Today, Raven Comatose recorded the single with me, Dame Katie Kairiri, as producer. She also finished the artwork. A few quick questions ....
Katie : So, what's the main song about?
Raven : "Avenging Angel", similar to "Sugar Rush", is about two women who see things different ways. Madelaine has a much more "sorted" life than her friend Cassie, who hasn't found things as easy as she'd like to .... Maddy always wanted to get the guy, which she did, and had a child with him. Cassie was always more of a working girl, but as we all know, it's easier for most girls to have babies than it is to get a high-paying job! So she lusts after Maddy's "perfect" life. Also, Maddy's friendship with Becky - played by Mikki Moo in the video - which gives her the dress, which is Becky's maid of honour dress, and the personification of Maddy's life, which then becomes Cassie's.
K : And Catriona Robbins' 10th bridesmaid dress - yours, and Rachel Catelli's.
R : Yes, that's where the song began. Originally called "Avenging Rachel", being as Rachel died, I was chosen as Catri's 10th bridesmaid. It was so - weird wearing her dress. It was like I hadn't got my head screwed on, as if my body had become Rachel. Hence the "Raven's Mannequin" artwork! ;)
K : What was it like working with Daniel Waz Here?
R : Great. He's really talented, and sings and plays the song really well. I originally wanted a girl to play Maddy, but Daniel's just as good a woman as he is a man. Also, he fits the dress - which was fitted to me, and my body shape isn't exactly feminine!
K : I notice a trend in your B-sides ....
R : Yes. It's weird having it out in the open, but "Senna" is one of the highest-strung emotional songs that I've ever written, I couldn't just leave it unreleased.
K : Why did you choose to cover "Mama Mia"?
R : *laughs* It's a bit of a joke. You know Rayne always says that he's not covering "Ana's Song" by Silverchair because it's too cliché? To be totally cliché and annoy Rayne a little, I'm covering his original song "Mama Mia".
