“Ladies and Gentlemen, we are back! We are so freaking back, right now! Welcome to the Universal Music Awards 2025, my name is Colby Mayfield, your host for the evening and I cannot wait to bring you a jam-packed evening with performances from some of the best artists in the game right now and dish out some awards to the people that get relentless praise all year long. It’s a difficult job, but I guess somebody has to do it, right?
The show is back for the second consecutive year and I’m delighted to be back as host once again to oversee tonight’s proceedings. Just glancing around the room I’m made very aware of the star studded calibre of famous faces that we have here tonight, it’s a lot of pressure. But the previous twelve months have been an incredibly productive time in the music industry, there’s a lot to unpack, many of those moments will manifest themselves into awards tonight. However, we have had to scrap one award temporarily this year, the best ‘E.P/Mixtape’ which had zero nominations … what happened guys? Like seriously, not even a diss track E.P? … Come on guys, do better! Actually on that subject, what is going on in the hip-hop community, no diss tracks, no beefs, rappers supporting rappers, this is not the way this is supposed to go. Quick side note, we’ve made sure to seat Tisha Jackson and Orion as far apart from each other this year, nothing to do with their rumoured backstage fallout from last years show, it was just to make enough room for their ego’s. Tamest rivalry of all time. Seriously though, take off those sunglasses, you’re indoors!

After a couple of years of quiet, it feels like the music industry is starting to move into another gear which will hopefully see so many new superstars leading the way over the next few years. Two huge albums of last year came from *checks notes* … Alicia Lena and Ryan Ross Hernandez? Oh, come on guys! What did I just say? Seriously, what albums do we have coming out this year? Aretha Franklin and Sam Cooke? … Actually come to think of it, maybe we could all use a little Sam Cooke in this country right now.
We have some wonderful performances coming up for you throughout the evening, three of which will be coming from last years ‘Best Record Label’ with ‘Head South Records’ represented by Mother of Tigers, Voodoo Dolls and Hana Rahman showcasing the remarkable growth of the UK based record label. I know some of the US based labels have been repeatedly contacting our government asking “Can we not put ridiculous tariffs on these guys too?”. I just urge caution, keep an eye on them, we know what they tried to do back in 1812.

Okay, lets get on with the show. As I said, we have a lot of awards to dish out tonight, we have a lot of celebrities desperate to get selfies with other celebrities, it's a cache thing, you wouldn’t understand. And we have some wonderful performers lined up throughout the evening, but there can only be one way to kick off the show with the artist of the moment. Ladies and Gentlemen, please welcome to the stage … LAYLA!”

OOC: Welcome to the live show, feel free to post your characters interactions and reactions in this thread alongside the show :)

An electric buzz pulsates throughout the venue, travelling by route of everyone from celebrity guests, to lucky audience members, to all the staffers and crew gearing up to launch the night into full swing. The chatter and mumbling soon crescendos abruptly into a sea of cheering as the lights go down and the main screen is taken over by an image. A purposely badly edited photograph of Layla defacing a happy couple's wedding portrait, with her sticking a cut out image of her own face over the bride, is projected across the venue. Felix Mendelssohn's "Wedding March" in C major begins to play as cameras zoom in and focus on the edited portrait. An angelic choir can be heard off-stage, harmonising in unison and creating a "heavenly" soundscape. The lighting of the stage suddenly flashes to a "holy" white light with smoke crawling and slinking across the floor. A glass-walled podium raises from the middle of the stage, containing Layla herself. She adorns a white dress, akin to a wedding one, but it appears to have a torn and shredded appearance with contrasting black lingerie underneath.

Within her small glassed staging, Layla has her own personal camera set up. She strokes the side of it as she looks down the lens, as if recording a video for someone near and dear to her. The audience cheer as the familiar introductory guitar licks of "Kindness" slowly come into play. The instrumental plays a lot longer than on the official recording, allowing a gradual fade in while the sound of the choir fades out. As the guitar builds, Layla continues to stroke the camera in front of her face. She emotively expresses down the lens, looking lovingly at the viewers as her image is sporadically shown on screen.

The crowd whoop in adoration as the young hitmaker finally raises the microphone to her lips, beginning the first verse of her most recent solo #1 hit. "The Human Experience" has thus far been a highly successful era for Sanchez, resulting in most people in the room knowing the huge pop song very well. She sings confidently with that signature coquettish infliction and glint in her eyes, still focusing her attention down the lens. This is definitely intended to be a "home video" for one very lucky guy. Playing coy as she enters the pre-chorus, she portrays cartoonishly embarrassed expressed, looking off to the sides and down at the ground, holding her hands to her chest as she pretends to be a modest "good girl".

We probably shouldn't meet up again
But you seem like you could use a shoulder
Perhaps leave alcohol out the equation?
Though heart to hearts are harder when sober
I can't believe you picked this bar
Must remember that scenario, right?
It's growing dark and you live quite far
Think it's best you stay the night

I put it down to those pesky little bubbles
Waiving away all the responsibility
I'm a good girl, I don't look for trouble
I swear that sucker looks for me

UserPostedImage

"UMAs, let's spread a little kindness tonight!"

Dropping the innocent act, Layla bursts into the bombastic slacker rock chorus, sensual dancing around in circles on the spot as the camera begins to move on tracks around her, capturing the starlet from all angles. As she belts out, a slew of scantily clad female performers adorning balaclavas strut on stage and surround Layla, moving around her glass container in a similar fashion to the camera. They seductively brandish a selection of melee weapons; silver encrusted baseball bats, crowbars and pokers, to name a few. They appear to be boasting the more "aggressive" attitude that bubbles underneath the song, smacking on the glass as if taunting the singer. Meanwhile, Layla flashes a pearly white smile and continues to sway around, seemingly not paying any attention to the women. She's keeping up her "kind" façade. There's an image to sell here!

Well, excuse a girl for caring
That passion runs more than skin deep
I'm sure that this kindness will be the death of me
An ear for your confessions
Ain't my fault where that might lead
Damn, this kindness will be the death of me

UserPostedImage

As the second verse kicks in, Layla slinks out of her glass cylinder as her dancers pull off their masks and throw them out into the crowd. They're a bunch of diverse, beautiful women who seemingly stick as close to Layla as possible, mimicking every movement she makes as they stare icily out into the audience. As it is a live televised performance, Layla switches out the original expletive in the song for the word "screw", which is what is played in the official radio edit of the track. Throughout her verse, the girls appear to "whisper" things in Layla's ear every so often, resulting in quizzical expressions from the singer. As the uttered comments continue, Layla grows physically more angry and uncomfortable, scowling and shaking her head in disapproval. The "kind" act that she's trying to portray is slowly slipping away.

She broke your heart, well screw her
Screw her and her legs that rise up to here
You're way too precious to cry and suffer
Lay your head on my chest, baby, feel no fear
I could go ahead and make my excuses
Leave you all lonesome amongst birds of prey
But I'll stick around to help you through this
To Hell with what the neighbors say

I'm not one for painting any illusions
I deal with facts, and it's his hour of need
Don't know why there's any confusion
Mother Teresa ain't got a thing on me

UserPostedImage

With the line "Mother Teresa ain't got a thing on me", Layla trails her fingertips over the large cross necklace that she is wearing. She seductively lets her fingers rest across her chest before diving into the chorus once more. Her choreography is simple yet sensual, involving a lot of hip movement and exposed legs as well as getting up close and personal with her gorgeous dancers, who never seem to be further than a couple of inches from her side. With more of a bravado built up, Layla licks her lips and cocks her head to the side as she looks out into the audience. She slowly raises a hand and, with her attitude, appears as if she is about to flip everyone off but morphs her gesture into a half-heart shape, sending love out to the crowd.

Well, excuse a girl for caring
That passion runs more than skin deep
I'm sure that this kindness will be the death of me
An ear for your confessions
Ain't my fault where that might lead
Damn, this kindness will be the death of me

As she enters the iconic bridge, the ladies disperse to the sides and Layla remains centre stage. The instrumentation of the song subdues, with the bombastic elements subsiding and focusing more so on gentle guitar licks and the soft, breathy vocal delivery that Layla uses for this segment. A spotlight shines down on her and she slowly crouches down, as if lowering to eye level with the audience to have a heart-to-heart and showcase a more vulnerable side. As the bridge continues, the dancers run on and off one-by-one, crouching down to Layla's side and whispering to her yet again. This time, they appear to be holding wedding paraphernalia and sentimental objects from this man's relationship. A veil, wedding photographs, a comically large slice of cake and an overblown pregnancy scan. Layla visibly freaks out and pushes them all away just in time for her to return to the chorus.

Hearsay and whispers, so pathetic
They don't align with my aesthetic
Who cares about logic? Y'all just bend it
Modern day saint with none of the credit
I'm just out here bringing peace!

Drying eyes and mending hearts
I'll be the muse, I'll be the counterpart
Let's paint a Botticelli in the dark
God, sue me, for reviving a lost art
This kindness will be the death of me!

UserPostedImage

The chorus returns gradually, with the first couple of lines still sung in a delicate manner against the stripped down production with the spotlight still on her. During this part, she gingerly walks backwards towards the glass container. As a heavy chord strikes and the tempo returns, the entire stage lights up once again and Layla lets out an impressive belted ad-lib before frantically running to the back of the stage. Her "kindness" is now out of the picture. Realising that she won't get what she wants and that she was always this man's second choice, Layla flies into a rage and begins to destroy the set. Picking up a laptop, she raises it above her head and throws it to the ground with gusto, causing it to smash dramatically. She then proceeds to knock the camera which she was using earlier down on its side, the lens projecting the footage of its fall as she does so.

Well, excuse a girl for caring
That passion runs more than skin deep
I'm sure that this kindness will be the death of me
An ear for your confessions
Ain't my fault where that might lead
Damn, this kindness will be the death of me

Continuing to sing with all of her might amongst the chaos, Layla returns to the front of the stage with her group of gal pals. Stage pyrotechnics above their heads begin to smoke and spark, creating the illusion that she has damaged a whole bunch more technology in the wake of her wrath. The edited picture of Layla and the groom from the beginning of the performance is show once more, however the tape surrounding Layla's face gives way, causing it to tear off and leave the man all alone in the frame with a now torn, faceless bride. The portrait is then engulfed in flames as Layla sings the parting line; "Damn, this kindness will be the death of me!"

The crowd of spectators and fellow peers erupt in cheers and claps, hollering in support for Sanchez as they get up on their feet to congratulate the first performance of the night. Layla can't hide her genuine smile as she stands alongside her dancers on stage, taking in the applause and general well-wishing. It also marks Layla's first award show performance since her infamous one with Joshua Grimmie at the FCAs, a moment which represents and incredibly dark time for the star. Being able to finally perform again, all on her own without hitch evidently means a lot to Layla.

"Thank you so much! Have an incredible night, everyone! We're just getting started!"

Layla blows a kiss out to the audience.

FAVOURITE TOURING ARTIST

“Here we go! First award of the evening and although live tours are no longer necessary to garner a successful and lasting career it’s still a huge part of the music industry. We’ve seen some incredible live tours over the years and hopefully many more to come this year, but the two nominees for Favourite Touring Artist are;

Sigrún – European Tour 2024

Alicia Lena – An Evening with Alicia Lena

Two wonderful live shows with the folksy intimacy of Sigrún’s European Tour earning rave reviews and the Las Vegas residency from Alicia Lena seeing all the stars come out to play over the course of 2024. But we must have a winner and the Favourite Touring Artist is …

The Universal Music Awards 2025, is the occasion to watch lesser-known names sharing the spotlight with industry giants. Among the night's performers, Hana Rahman stood out, not just for her nominations for Best New Artist and Song of the Year, but for the defiant energy that had catapulted her debut single, “Wanna Die in Birmingham,” to #2 on the charts last summer.

The stage was set: a collision of her indonesian roots and her reality. Bold batik flower patterns sprawled across screens, intertwined with a glowing orange silhouette of Birmingham’s skyline. It was like a love letter and a middle finger to the city all at once.

As the first notes of a smooth reggae-dub bassline rolled out, the crowd stirred. Heavy electric guitar reverbs sliced through the rhythm, punctuating the percussion of Indian urumee drums and a rhythmic beatbox. The DJ layered the mix with samples of Indonesian gamelan and the faint hum of Birmingham streets, a collage of Hana’s worlds.

Hana emerged, dressed in a kaleidoscope of colors that celebrated her Indonesian heritage but somehow felt as edgy as the city she came from. Her movements were smooth yet restrained, her demeanor cool but with an edge of defiance. For a moment, she stood there, eyes scanning the audience.

“Hear me now!”, her smooth voice cutting through the murmurs.

UserPostedImage

The room leaned in. Hana swayed, her hips moving effortlessly to the bassline as she began, her voice rich and velvety:

"Heart is bleedin'
Memories are flyin' - low
In a cold cold hole
Under a grey grey sky
Wanna die in Birmingham"

Her delivery was deliberate, smooth, yet somehow defiant. She swayed to the rhythm, as if the music was both a tether and a release.

The next verse came faster, almost rapped.

"City, you pushed me to the side,
Never welcomed me
Putting me down
From the day I was born
I never felt home
Never belong, always apart
Integration fairies
Never leaned on me"

She moved across the stage, sometimes with her head bowed as if weighed down by memories, other times locking eyes with the crowd, daring them to look away.

"Racism's floating
Thick like a toxic smog
Walkin' the streets
Heart heavy like a log
On Ladypool Road, they called me out
'Go back home,'
They used to shout
'Go back home,'
They used to shout
'Go Back home, go Back home, go Back home, go Back home...."

UserPostedImage

The repetition hung in the air, each word more damning than the last. Then, her voice soared into the chorus, a piercing lament that showed her vocal range.

"I wish my feet never walked your soil, city
I wish your streets never rot my soul
I wish my feet never walked your soil, city
I wish your streets never rot my soul
I wish my feet never walked your soil, city
I wish your streets never rot my soul"

The audience listenned carefuly , some visibly moved, others leaning forward as if to catch every word. The bassline dropped into an instrumental break, punctuated by city sounds : traffic, distant chatter, a siren wail. Hana’s voice returned with a renewed intensity, steady and resolute:

"Nah bruv, I'm not your 'cute Asian chick'
Thinkin' I’m exotic?
Just for show?
You don’t know the struggle,
You don’t know the flow
See me smilin', but you don't see the fight
I was born in this city
But never felt right"

As the beat cut out, she stood center stage, staring into the crowd.

"Labelled by my skin
Labelled by my name
Labelled by my face
I wanna die here
... in Birmingham"

Then the bass thundered back, and she danced, slow and deliberate, as if shaking off years of hurt with every step.

"I wanna die in Birmingham
Be a burden on you, like you was to I
Be a burden on you, like you was to I"

Then, the chorus came back, Hana's voice lifting into a plaintive cry:

"I wish my feet never walked your soil, city
I wish your streets never rot my soul
I wish my feet never walked your soil, city
I wish your streets never rot my soul
I wish my feet never walked your soil, city
I wish your streets never rot my soul"

UserPostedImage

For the finale, she delivered her final lines with venom wrapped in melody, each phrase being a sort of catharsis:

"Treated like an alien
In my bloody own place
City, you shunned us
Thrown under the bus
City, you threw stones,
And left us scarred
You labeled us
'Chinese virus'
And kept us barred"

The final lines were sung with deliberate care, her voice breaking slightly:

"I wanna die in Birmingham
Make you remember me
I wanna die here
Make you feel the weight of me
Tried to fit, but you boxed me in
Always saw my skin, not the heart within
Called me fuckin'' paki, yeah
Your words cut deep"

The music faded, leaving her standing alone, her voice a whisper:

"Yeah, the words cut deep...
City, your words cut deep...
Words cut deep, City."

She paused and she ended slowly:
"Yeah the words cut deep."

Hana stood motionless, her defiance giving way to vulnerability as she bowed deeply. She bowed, a quiet thank-you, and the room exploded in applause and cheers. Some stood, others clapped cautiously, still digesting the honesty that had just shaken the room. Hana Rahman had made her mark, and the industry felt it.

Noah is up on his part for rap verse as he didn't miss the beat of the words and fans went crazy over his rough smooth voice as he wink at the camera.

UserPostedImage

Yo, I’m stepping out, no looking back,
All those dreams I had, now still questioning if it there.
Goodbye to the times I thought were fate
That’s how well I know you
Look into my eyes

After Noah did his rap verse Tom sings his verse before Jin rap but his vocal little out of breath but thankfully he recover.

Underneath the faded moonlight, We whispered dreams that felt so right
But now the stars, they don't align,
In this lonely heart of mine.
Baby, tell me now, I already know everything about it

Jin rap like if he god as he kept rapping like if he got bills to paid.

하지만 침묵 속에는 노래가 있습니다.
희망의 노래가 속삭입니다. "당신은 강해요."
지나간 일의 재 속에서,
새로운 시작이 시작될 것입니다.

Fin sings his verse as he go for high note on "Baby, baby" but not too high he kept it where it doesn't overpower the song but kept it fresh and neat.

더 이상 기다릴 수 없어, 말하는 것을 두려워하지 마
난 거짓말이 아니야, 자기야, 진심이야
오늘 밤 내가 원하는 건 너에게 말하고 싶은 거야
Cuz I love you, baby, baby

UserPostedImage

날 사랑하니, 사랑하지 않아?
자기야, 지금 말해봐

나에게 거짓말을 하려고 하지 마세요
더 이상 추측 게임이 없습니다.
내 눈을 똑바로 봐 자기, Ya ya ya
Tell me is our love still there?
Please
Gotta keep it real, now now now
Why are you make it hard for me, Babygirl?

The fire effect come up as the audience were shook bout the stage presence and their vocal/dance comb together as this isn't new to them.

As they finished the song "Yes Or No" boys took a bow to audience and proceed to say "Thank You" as the camera got them tearing up a bit but they hold it strong as they headed to backstage to cool them down after their comeback performance.

Hailing from Sheffield, UK, Mother of Tigers has roared their way into the spotlight, earning first-time nominations for Best New Artist, Artist of the Year, Best Band, Best Album, and Song of the Year at this year's Universal Music Awards. Known for their electrifying energy onstage, they began as a cover band, drawing heavily from cult classics like The Rocky Horror Picture Show. With the movie celebrating its 50th anniversary, Mother of Tigers is paying homage to their roots with a show-stopping tribute. And for this special performance, they’ve invited ... a very special guest...

The murmurs of the crowd turned to cheers as a makeshift lift (gold-painted...), evocative of the Rocky Horror Picture Show, descended into the center of the audience. A low bass rumble played by Millie Harkin, vibrates through the hall as the camera zooms in.

A spotlight fixed on the lift as the band Mother of Tigers took their places on stage: Lead singer Michaela Ward-Chambers lounged on an ornate, gothic-style chair, her black sequined dress sparkling under the lights. Freya Thomas adjusted her electric guitar, while Derya Çetin tapped her drumsticks rhythmically on the snare, and Louise Orchard sat behind a grand piano, her hands poised over the keys with dramatic flair. The audience could see a banner on the stage reading " Annual Transylvanian Convention".

Then, with a hiss, the lift doors opened.
Bathed in dramatic spotlight, Erich Hess stood there, lips curled into a devilish grin. He stands motionless for a beat, wearing a white shirt, a black leather jacket hung lazily over his shoulders, and tight jeans.

Erich Hess (singing, with a devilish smirk):
"How d'you do I
See you've met my
Faithful handyman..."

The audience gasps and cheers as Erich steps out of the lift, his movements deliberate, each step a homage to Tim Curry’s iconic strut. He prowls through the crowd, locking eyes with startled celebrities and offering a knowing wink to a particularly flustered pop star. At one point, he flicks a hand through his hair, causing a ripple of applause.

"He's just a
Little brought down because
When you knocked
He thought you were the candyman."

He spins dramatically in the stage's direction. The band kicks in, a thunderous cascade of drums, bass, and electric guitar, as Erich strides through the rows of tables, throwing his jacket in one of the guests ' head, his every movement oozing charisma.

"Don't get strung out
By the way I look
Don't judge a book by its cover...
"

By the time he reaches the stage, the band is fully unleashed. Michaela Ward-Chambers, stands at her mic, grinning. Millie Harkin plucks her bass with precision, her voice blending perfectly with Michaela's in sultry backing harmonies. Freya Thomas shreds her guitar, while Louise Orchard pounds on the keys.

Erich (onstage, mimicking Tim Curry’s theatrical gestures):
"I'm not much of a man by the light of day
But by night I'm one hell of a lover!
I'm just a sweet transvestite
From Transsexual, Transylvania!"

The audience erupts, the energy in the room now bordering on riotous. Erich saunters over to Colby Mayfield, who gamely assumes the role of Brad.

Erich (Singing and joining Colby)
"Let me
Show you around, maybe
Play you a sound
You look like you're both
Pretty groovy
Or if you want something visual
That's not too abysmal
We can take in an old
Steve Reeves movie"

Colby Mayfield (nervously, in character):
"I'm glad we caught you at home. Could we use your phone? We're both in a bit of a hurry..."

Michaela leans into her mic, arching an eyebrow as she delivers a deadpan "Right." The crowd roars with laughter.

Colby Mayfield:
"We'll just say where we are
Then go back to the car
We don't want to be any worry"

Erich grabs Colby’s water glass, drains it, and tosses it over his shoulder, never breaking eye contact with the camera.

Erich (cutting Colby off with mock impatience):
"Well you got
Caught with a flat, well
How about that!

Well babies
Don't you panic..."

Following the rythm, Erich and Michaela leave Colby and return to the stage, near the gothic chair.

Erich (singing)
"By the light of the night
It will all seem al right
Ill get you a satanic
Mechanic...

I'm just a sweet transvestite
From Transsexual, Transylvania!"

Michaela and the band join in for the next refrain, their voices harmonizing in perfect theatrical unity. Freya takes a moment to kick a leg into the air, channeling Columbia’s high-energy antics, while Derya smashes the drums.

(Derya Çetin)

Then Erich spins dramatically and heads toward Michaela, who reclines lazily on the crimson chair. They exchange a conspiratorial glance as the band punctuates his every move with sharp, deliberate notes. Erich sat across the chair, Michaela’s leg over him.

UserPostedImage
(Michaela Ward-Chambers)

Erich (with a devilish grin):
"Why don't you
Stay for the night?"

Michaela (whispering, with exaggerated drama):
"Night!"

Erich:
"Or maybe a bite?"

Michaela (whispering, coyly):
"Bite!"

Erich:
"I can show you my favorite
Obsession..."
I've been making a man
With blond hair and a tan
And he's good for relieving my
Tension!"

After moving Michaela's legs, Erich stood languidly from the chair.

Erich (singing)
"I'm just a sweet transvestite
From Transsexual, Transylvania!"

Then he and Michaela launched into a series of energetic dance moves, culminating in a perfectly executed Elbow sex gesture, evoking the iconic move of movie characters RiffRaff and Magenta.

UserPostedImage
(Millie Harkin)

The band leans into the song’s crescendo, their backing vocals reaching a fever pitch.

Erich and Mother of Tigers (harmonizing):
"I'm just a sweet transvestite
From Transsexual, Transylvania!"

Erich pauses, grinning mischievously at the crowd, then delivers his final spoken line with a perfect pause for comedic effect:

"So
Come up to the Lab
And see what's on the slab
I see you shiver with antici...pation
But maybe the rain
Is really to blame
So I'll remove the cause
But not
The symptom!!"

The room hangs on his every word, and as the song ends in a dazzling explosion of lights and sound, the audience leaps to their feet in a thunderous ovation.

The applause from "Sweet Transvestite" hasn’t even begun to fade when Louise Orchard transitions seamlessly into the opening notes of "I Can Make You a Man." Her fingers glide across the piano keys, drawing the audience back into the Rocky Horror world. The stage lights soften, creating an intimate glow, as Michaela Ward-Chambers takes center stage.

Michaela moves to stand beside Louise Orchard, placing a hand on the piano as she begins to sing. Her voice is rich and theatrical, her delivery drenched in innuendo.

(Louise Orchard)

Michaela Ward-Chambers (singing, with a smirk):
"A weakling, weighing 98 pounds
Will get sand in his face
When kicked to the ground..."

With deliberate sensuality, Michaela turns her attention to Erich Hess, who now stands statuesque beside the piano, perfectly embodying the stoic, muscle-bound Rocky. Michaela extends a single finger, tracing a slow line from his throat to his chest, her movements mirroring those of Tim Curry in the film. Erich doesn’t flinch, maintaining his greaser bravado with a slight pout, much to the delight of the crowd.

Michaela (continuing, with playful exaggeration):
"And soon in the gym with a determined chin
The sweat from his pores
As he works for his cause...
Will make him glisten
And gleam, and with massage
And just a little bit of steam, hm hm hm..."

She chuckles knowingly, breaking the tension as Erich strikes an over-the-top bodybuilding pose, flexing his imaginary muscles in slow motion. The audience erupts in laughter and cheers, while Louise leans into her piano, beaming at Erich’s antics.

Michaela (turning to the audience, her voice soaring):
"He'll be pink and quite clean
He'll be a strong man
Oh, honey!
But the wrong man!"

UserPostedImage
(Michaela Ward-Chambers)

Erich, still by the piano, catches Louise’s eye and gives her a dramatic wink, eliciting an exaggerated sigh from the pianist. Michaela notices and strides back toward center stage, her devilish grin suggesting she’s not about to be outdone.

Michaela (with mock jealousy):
"He'll eat nutritious, high protein
And swallow raw eggs!"

The line is delivered with perfect comic timing, and she punctuates it by miming cracking an egg into an imaginary glass and tossing it back. The crowd roars as Erich mimics lifting dumbbells in exaggerated “gym bro” style.

Michaela (circling Erich, her voice dripping with mischief):
"Try to build up his shoulders
His chest, arms, and... legs!"

With this line, she pauses dramatically, her eyes gleaming as she gestures toward his legs. The audience laughs again, the playful chemistry between the performers impossible to ignore.

Michaela (belting, harmonizing with the band):
"Such an effort
If he only knew of my plan
In just seven days
I can make you a man!"

At this moment, the other members of Mother of Tigers join in, their voices blending in lush harmony that fills the room. Erich takes the opportunity to mime an Olympic-worthy gym routine: push-ups, pull-ups, chin-ups and squats.

Michaela circled him like a cat, her every movement deliberate, her voice sultry:
"He'll do press-ups and chin-ups
Do the snatch, clean, and jerk
He thinks dynamic tension
Must be hard work..."

UserPostedImage
(Freya Thomas)

The electric guitar cuts in for a sharp riff as Freya Thomas steps forward, adding a touch of rock 'n' roll flair to the number. Michaela, feeding off the energy, adopts a more explicit attitude, leaning into her mic with sultry intent.

Michaela (practically purring):
"But a deltoid and a bicep, a hot groin and a tricep
Makes me shake, makes me wanna take Charles Atlas by the han-han-hand..."

She pauses, her delivery so deliberately suggestive that the audience erupts into cheers once more. Erich spins on his heel, striding confidently across the stage to join Michaela, flexing his arms with mock seriousness.

Michaela and Mother of Tigers (harmonizing):
"In just seven days
I can make you a man!"

The lights flare, the harmonies building to a triumphant crescendo as Michaela turns to the audience, her arms outstretched in theatrical glory. Erich mimics lifting a giant imaginary weight, “struggling” with exaggerated effort before triumphantly hoisting it above his head.

Michaela (grinning, leaning into the mic):
"Dig it if you can..."

Michaela and Mother of Tigers (together):
"In just seven days
I can make you a man!"

The audience erupted into thunderous applause and cheers.
At the end of the song,Erich Hess and Michaela Ward-Chambers stood center stage, joined by the rest of Mother of Tigers. The band members exchanged grins. They gathered center stage for bows and congratulations, but Louise wasn’t done. Still seated at her piano, leaned into her mic with a wicked grin and sang:

"Toucha, toucha, toucha meeeee....I wanna be diiiirty!"

The crowd erupted once more, the artists onstage melted into laughter.

Backstage, the energy was electric. Derya Çetin twirled her drumsticks triumphantly, Freya Thomas high-fived the crew, and Millie Harkin was already brainstorming captions for the inevitable flood of social media posts. Erich, meanwhile removes an ornate cigarette case from his jacket." you know, they say rocky changes a person..." erich opens the case and removes one of several blunts." you and I...the people around here...we have the bond only seen in buddy cop movies. It was fucking rad working with you." Erich nods sagely and then adds." oh,i should share. Im a terrible guest."

“Thanks, but I quit smoking since… yesterday,” Michaela replied, laughing. She grabbed a beer from the cooler, twisted the cap off with a satisfying hiss, and took a sip. “But yeah, I had a lot of fun too. That was great. You smashed it”.

Freya, who had joined Erich and Michaela, finally spoke up. “Erich, you’ll forever be my fav sweeeet transvestiiiite!!” And the room erupted in laughter.

Over the next few days, Mother of Tigers dominated headlines across Sheffield and the UK. Critics raved about their gutsy reinterpretation of The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Hana Rahman

Jugendstil

Mother of Tigers

Claire Price

Jack Dunn

Young Khalifa

Tahlia

I’m sure they’ll all be leading the charge for the next generation, but the winner of ‘New Artist of the Year’ is …

BAND/DUO/GROUP OF THE YEAR

“Now traditionally this next award would have been hotly contested by rock bands and the occasional pop group, but over the years the idea of what a band is something that has evolved, for a handful of years the idea of dominant rock bands in this category was unlikely at best. But thankfully we are seeing those rock band traditions return to the fore with the likes of Voodoo Dolls and Mother of Tigers hopefully paving the way for a genre rebirth in the years to come. The nominees for ‘Band/Duo/Group of the Year’ are …

Voodoo Dolls

Jugendstil

During that great show, no one was really prepared for this: Voodoo Dolls (Jack Lai and Haru Shibata) would not perform tonight...they would detonate.

The stage was minimalist, just two mic stands, a drum kit, and Haru’s guitar. No flashy visuals. No pyrotechnics. Just raw energy. Jack sat behind his drums, raising his sticks like a general preparing his troops for battle.

Haru, meanwhile, looked like she’d wandered in from a skate park : a yellow hoodie, shorts, pink sunglasses perched on her nose, and, inexplicably, a pair of headphones covering her ears. She adjusted her Telecaster, cast a quick glance at Jack.

The air was electric, the crowd waiting for their first strike.

And then it came. No intro. No buildup. No warning. And with a nod, they launched into "Assassin Man" without a second of preamble.

The opening was pure Voodoo Dolls: just a ferocious explosion of sound. Jack hammered at the drums like they’d insulted his mother, while Haru unleashed a riff so hefty it could’ve knocked over the first three rows.

Haru leaned into the mic, her sharp voice slicing through the noise:

"Assassin man
Assassin man
Assassin man
From Hong Kong Town

Jumping to the left,
Running to the right
What the hell are you doin'?

Assassin man
Assassin man
Why don’t you listen to your old sensei?

Assassin man
Assassin man
You have some skills, but you have no brain

Life ain’t easy for a lame assassin like you
Life ain’t easy for a lame assassin like you
Life ain’t easy for a lame assassin like you"

UserPostedImage

She stepped back, her focus narrowing on her guitar. Jack took over the vocals, roaring into the mic as his drumming grew even more frenzied:

"You have no Creed!
You have no Friends!
You think you live in secret,
But they all know your name!"

Then, the interplay. Jack’s eyes locked on Haru’s; their coordination was a precarious dance. A single misstep could send the whole thing spiraling into disaster, but they performed on that razor’s edge.

"There’s no future for you (Jack)
In the murder industry! (Haru)
No, there’s no future for you (Jack)
In the murder industry! (Haru)"

And then, an unexpected interruption.

Jack stopped mid-beat, a devilish grin creeping across his face. Haru froze, then sighed theatrically, crossing her arms over her guitar. She rolled her eyes, knewing what was coming...

“You know you have to do it,” Jack teased, leaning into his mic. “For the fanbase.”

Haru groaned, her sunglasses failing to hide her exasperation. “That little shit, again?”.

The audience erupted into laughter. They knew Jack well enough by now to expect the unexpected.

“Your ‘sh’ word’s gonna get bleeped on TV,” Jack teased.

Haru leaned into her mic and screamed, “Punkpup, attack now, you motherfucker!!!!”

The crowd roared, especially the die-hard fans remembering the animated film that had catapulted Assassin Man to viral fame, especially the scene where a japanime version of Haru invoked Punkpup, a sort of punkish (but kawaii !) pokemon to defeat Jack.

Without missing a beat, they launched back into the chaos. Haru’s voice cracked with a raw intensity:

"Assassin man
Assassin man
Even your targets laugh at ya

Assassin man
Assassin man
On your kill count, just cats and rats!

Sneaking through the shadows
Flipping like a pro
You just can’t stop tripping on your own toes

Life ain’t easy for a lame assassin like you
Life ain’t easy for a lame assassin like you
Life ain’t easy for a lame assassin like you"

UserPostedImage

Jack followed, his voice rising above the crashing cymbals:

"You have no Creed!
You have no Friends!
You think you live in secret,
But they all know your name!"

Together, they sang with a synchronized ferocity:

"There’s no future for you (Jack)
In the murder industry! (Haru)
No, there’s no future for you (Jack)
In the murder industry! (Haru)"

Haru cast a glance at Jack—a signal—and launched into the final verse:

"Assassin man
Assassin man
Just killin’ for the fun of it

Assassin man
Assassin man
Forgot your mission, now lost in Spain

Assassin man
Assassin man
Ninja kicks, but you’re so lame"

The music dropped. They sang the outro a cappella, their voices jagged and unpolished, perfectly imperfect:

"The mission was clear,
You lost the target
Dropped your weapon
Fumbling like a fool
Assassin man, you’re breaking the cool"

Then, like a lightning strike, they both exploded back into the song.

(Haru)
"Life ain't easy for a lame assassin like you!
Life ain't easy for a lame assassin like you!"

(Together)
"Life ain't easy for a lame assassin like you!"

Then, the final burst. Haru and Jack unleashed everything they had left, the song ending in a cacophonous crash. Jack flung his sticks into the air, grinning wildly, while Haru stood motionless.

The crowd erupted, the polished world of the Universal Music Awards shaken to its core. The Ceremony could resume.

Alicia Lena Live: Universal Music Awards 2025
Los Angeles, California, USA
March 01, 2025

UserPostedImage

As she’s introduced as the final performer, the stage remains in complete darkness with the lights around the entire arena going out before the voice of Alicia Lena can be heard alone without instrumentation as she repeats the words, “Here we stand/Standing stronger together/Whatever the weather/Here we stand/Standing stronger together/Whatever the weather/Here we stand.” She pauses to let the words linger in the air before addressing the audience in the venue and the millions watching at home, “What a beautiful evening tonight, spreading love and appreciation.” As she begins playing a piano melody to back up her spoken introduction to her performance, “It’s not always easy to see that love and appreciation in everyday life and it feels like we’re not nearing a world where that’s the norm. But all we can do as people is respond to hatred and negativity with love and positivity. If enough people follow that mantra we will eventually see the tides turn in time. Let’s fight hate with love, we only get this one life. Is it not better to spend it lifting each other up.” she pauses for a couple of brief seconds before continuing, “It’s going to be a difficult four years and there’s no guarantee that what comes after those four years will be better than what came before it. In this country we’ve seen Fascism replaced by incompetence only to be replaced by Fascism once more. It’s difficult to know when the brighter days are coming. But we must remain hopeful, we must stick to the basic principles of humanity of kindness and love at a time where it feels like we’re more divided than ever.” which gains a large cheer before she begins playing into her first song of the evening;

“Marching in the street for equality
Searching for change is what we all seek
Let’s raise our voices
Til’ we can’t breathe
And we’ll all take the knee
For our family

And we can hope and we can pray
And long for such a better day
There’s more voices to the cause than there’s ever been before
We can’t bare to see this happening anymore
Need to rediscover the love that we were born for

Let’s say their names louder
So it’s harder for them to deny their failure
And realize the blood on their hands with their fucked up behaviour
In this modern world we shouldn’t have to tolerate
All this kind of ancient hate
It’s time we start to truly educate
So we can learn to find peace
Before it’s too late”

With a beautifully melodic and simplistic stripped back vocal and piano combination, Alicia delivers the songs chorus another three times “Here we stand/Standing stronger together/Whatever the weather/Here we stand/Standing stronger together/Whatever the weather/Here we stand.” before the opening track of her closing performance comes to an end. She takes a second for the ripples of applause and cheers to die down around the venue, before the sound of a blues guitar riff can be heard as the familiar opening strains of her 2024 collaborative single “Rooftops (Part II)” play out to the crowd in the venue and the millions watching at home. Eruptions of cheers can be heard as Ryan Ross Hernandez makes his way out onto center stage, playing the intro to their 2024 hit single. After a few moments of solo guitar playing, Alicia begins to play the piano alongside Hernandez, the two exchanging friendly smiles as they launch into their track. Alicia delivering the opening verse of the song with a wistful and soulful delivery;

“Money changes everything
For better or worse, depends on the hands gripping the purse
I’ve seen pure love grow like a flower beneath concrete
I’ve seen two hearts pulling together, struggling to make ends meet
I’ve seen that same pure love die, crumbling and blamed on it’s foundations being weak
After those same fighters made it out of poverty and started living in luxury
Mental scars and single-minded ambition
Can throw you from the path you once shared together
Can throw you off your combined mission
I think we’ve lost track
Of what’s real and true in this world
I think we need some time for healing and reflection
We like to think we’re marching forward
But it’s directionless
If we’re not marching forward together”

UserPostedImage

Alicia follows the opening verse with the songs pre-chorus and chorus, “I wish I could just get you to stop/Stop for one moment/Take in the silence/And remember what makes you feel grateful/Let’s go back to the basics/Take a step back from the hateful.” which aptly appears to link into the opening track and Alicia’s brief monologue about where her country finds itself in this current moment before she opens her vocal chords, rising high in voice for the songs anthemic chorus, “I wanna scream it from the rooftops/With fire in my lungs/And love in my heart/I wanna scream it from the rooftops/With passion and desire/Roaring like wildfire/I wanna scream it from the rooftops.” With the combination of almost gospel-esque piano tones and soulful blues guitar riff feeling like a perfect blend of both artists original style and vision coming together onstage. It doesn’t feel gimmicky or showy having the two artists performing together onstage as Ryan Ross Hernandez revels in servicing the music with a moving and masterful performance on guitar. He does briefly take to the microphone to deliver his verse from their collaboration, delivering his words with passion and an underlying tone of anger as he takes aim at the obsession of power that runs through the United States today;

“Pompous politicians, corporate greed
Anyone can be bought for the right price
I've seen loved ones become vultures overnight
Their eyes turning from beautiful colors to dollar signs
Everyone's in it for themselves in this world
The green and gold has its shine but it fades fast
You can have every little thing you dream of
Buy everything to fill up the empty space
But be depressed and all alone just the same
Take it from me
I used to live for the glitz and the glamour
The LA parties and the New York flings
I had the biggest castle in the kingdom but no queen
Now I finally have a love just for me
I let her go once but I'm never doing that again
You can keep all the rest, I don't need it
I wanna scream it from the rooftops
Part two”

Following on from the verse delivered by Hernandez, we see Alicia take the vocal reigns once more. She delivers the songs pre-chorus with an additional hook before closing the song out with the songs chorus with the audience on their feet and singing along in the venue. As the song comes to a close, Ryan Ross Hernandez continues playing the guitar, a subtle and more subdued guitar run as the audiences cheers and applause begins to fade. A couple of seconds before Alicia begins playing the piano, matching the tone of the more subdued guitar playing from Ryan Ross Hernandez and it becomes evident to some in the audience what song they’ve chosen. Opting not to go into the full song, Alicia takes on the vocals of the Ryan Ross Hernandez track “In Hate We Trust, USA” as she sings out “I thought most of us had stride to be a better person/How wrong was I to think that?/When these days people are still getting beaten and killed ‘cause of race and sexuality/You should probably check again your faith if it taught you to be an asshole.” Which appears to fit into the overall theme of the performance from Alicia’s closing set, taking aim at the society that the United States and the entire world as a whole finds itself in.

“All the children that lost a parent
All the parents that lost a child
All ‘cause the color of their skin was hated by some racist fucks
The same who keep waving confederate flags when they have no idea what they even stand for
It’s all about pride in this country
Nobody wants to be told what to do or lose their right to bear arms
Cops are trying to start a war with every senseless murder of another black person
In the stolen land of the free
Only if you’re white will you feel safe leaving your house
Only if you’re white will you have no trouble here”

UserPostedImage

The audience stand up and applause as Alicia sings the words penned by Ryan Ross Hernandez back in 2020 as the artist himself stands centre stage, playing guitar and listening to his words being delivered from his longtime friend, seemingly smiling at the powerfully aggressive nature of Alicia’s vocal delivery of his biting and critical words. It’s clear that it’s a slightly cut-back version of the original track, with Alicia briefly singing the tracks pre-chorus and chorus before it becomes clear as the guitar playing from Hernandez changes in pace and rapper Jadyn Ghalen makes his way onto the stage with boundless energy as the track seamlessly changes into the higher tempo “Make America Breathe Again” originally released by hip-hop group Orion back in 2020. Jadyn moves around the stage freely as he raps the chorus from the track four times, “Let's make America breathe again/Let us be the catalyst for change again/Let's not be shackled by chains again/Let's make America breathe again/Let us be the catalyst for change again/Let's not be shackled by chains again.” which puts the final emphasis on where they stand in terms of the direction of their country.

As the medley of “In Hate We Trust, USA/Make America Breathe Again” gives a brief taste of a crossover that not many people would have had on their 2025 bingo cards with a Ryan Ross Hernandez track and an Orion track being spliced together it gives the show a moment that is likely to be completely unique. But it was obvious to those in the audience and likely to those at home where things were headed with three out of four artists from the recent Alicia Lena single all onstage at the same time it was only a matter of time before Alicia allowed the audience cheers to die down once more before introducing the final piece of this performance to the stage, “Ladies and Gentlemen, please welcome to the stage … LAYLA!” she says and with that the crowd erupt as the industry’s it girl at the moment returns to the stage having opened the proceedings at the 2025 Universal Music Awards. The familiar guitar riff and piano combination from one of the most recent singles “Beacon of Hope” plays out and the crowd all get on their feet for the closing song of Alicia’s set and the closing moments of the second annual Universal Music Awards.

UserPostedImage

Alicia opens things up with the opening and closing verse of the track, with Ryan Ross Hernandez chipping in on vocals for the pre-chorus which sets the songs chorus perfectly as Alicia and Layla sing in harmony “We need the light in the dark/To help guide us through/Let’s use it all up before we’re gone/Shine bright like a beacon of hope in the dark/Shine brightly on/Like a beacon of hope in the dark/Shine brightly on/Oh, shine brightly on.” which once more just ties all of this performance together from the opening track and closing track highlighting the idea of keeping faith and hope and belief in the darkest of times and the two songs in the middle of the set taking aim at those that are in positions of power. As the song progresses we see Layla and Jadyn Ghalen deliver their verses from the track before Alicia closes things out with the final verse. It’s a unique moment as the show closes with Ryan Ross Hernandez, Layla, Jadyn Ghalen and Alicia Lena all on the same stage together as the audience in the venue give them a standing ovation to close out the performance and leave the second annual Universal Music Awards with a lasting image and a powerful message of hope running throughout the entire set.

SETLIST;
“Here We Stand”
“Rooftops (Part II)” (feat. Ryan Ross Hernandez)
“In Hate We Trust, USA/Make America Breathe Again” (feat. Ryan Ross Hernandez, Jadyn Ghalen)
“Beacon of Hope” (feat. Ryan Ross Hernandez, Jadyn Ghalen, Layla)
