INFORMATION"Get Off" is a song recorded by American singer-songwriter Layla and American rapper, Jadyn Ghalen. The original album version of the track was written solely by Layla. Ghalen penned his verse for the official remix sent to radio as the song was selected as the fifth single from "The Human Experience". Production of the song was handled by Preeti. The pair previously worked together on Sanchez's debut album, "Feel No Fear", with three of their songs making the final cut for that record. Layla penned the lyrics and created the vocal melody for the song on her guitar during some personal downtime at her home before bringing it to Preeti the following week, with production being built around the already existing acoustic demo. After the album's release, many critics and fans highlighted "Get Off" as a potential future hit, resulting in Layla being swayed towards selecting it for radio service. Wanting to "offer something new", Sanchez personally contacted Ghalen regarding a possible guest appearance on the track's remix.
Lyrically, "Get Off" is Layla's most sexually charged and overt song to date. In "Get Off", Layla pines over someone who she is in frequent contact with, vocalising her deepest, most carnal fantasies involving them and pushing for such desires to become a reality. This person infiltrates her thoughts and dreams, consuming her mind with almost constant fictitious sexual scenarios. She alludes to these mental pictures leading to her urge to masturbate, and how she yearns for it to become more physical. She often invites this crush over in the hopes that someday, they will cross over that line and become intimate with her. Ghalen plays the role of the potential love interest and it is revealed that he too possesses these sexual desires and hidden attraction for Sanchez. He delves into deep and explicit detail of the intimate fantasies he wishes to play out in the bedroom, all of which is unbeknownst to the hankering Layla.
"Get Off" is a synthpop, disco and R&B infused song, taking inspiration from both modern day pop trends and sonic influences from 1980's music. The production has been noted as feeling "light" and "frothy", creating a "dreamlike" and "sensual" listening experience, gliding the listeners along as they take part in the seductive bedroom tale. Layla initially created the vocal melody and guitar arrangement before Preeti produced and programmed the song, adding drums, keyboard, percussion and bass as well as incorporating a 90's inspired G-Funk synthesiser into the track. Sanchez stated that due to the song's overtly sexual lyrics, the production had to feel "whimsical" and "feathery" in order to sell the song as a "flirtatious fantasy" rather than anything cruder.
SONG COMMENTARYLayla wrote:"Ooooh boy, how can I describe this song? Uh, would "Horny Jail" suffice? Hehe! Yeah, basically, it does what it says on the tin. We're all human. We're all red-blooded. It happens. We have these thoughts, fantasies and desires. I tapped into the idea of craving someone earlier on the record with "Kindness" and "Room For Three" but those song were a little more intricate. The person and the scenarios in which they were involved came with baggage. A LOT of it. "Get Off" is the opposite. It's plain and simple lust. That age-old sexual fantasy of the guy or girl next door, the pizza delivery person, the handyman, plumber...whatever...just that idea of being naughty, throwing caution to the wind, and just being two hot people living in the moment doing hot people stuff. I think most people have let their minds wander into scenarios like that and have wanted to lose all inhibition, rip each other's clothes off and go at it. It's pure carnal. It's just one big dirty dream come to life. Though, you know, DESPITE having these thoughts and urges, I still have to play it a teeny, tiny bit coy. That's where the whole jokey "where do you get off on doing this to me?!" angle comes into play. Putting it on the other person. How dare they make me feel horny. I'm a lady, after all! Ha!"
"Throughout this album, and in my past work, I've tackled a lot of heavy subjects and bared my soul in my regards. This song is just fun. Stupid, even! Some of the stuff I say on here, I can't quite believe. I was giggling away even as I was coming up with it never mind trying to lay it down in a professional recording booth! I got a little red in the face at times but it was such a joyous, freeing experience overall. Working with my girl Preeti had a lot to do with it. She totally got what it was and it felt like such a safe space with just us girls. I might have coined the song but she made it what it was with this fluffy, cotton candy like production. It just sounds so slinky, breezy and dreamlike. It really did have to become this whimsical and feathery sounding track in order for it to be pulled off correctly. I want it to come across as this vivid, over the top, almost magical fantasy. Preeti really did the thing. Otherwise I feel like it could've just come across as crude with no redemption. I'm not TOTALLY about that. I still like my splashes of cuteness thrown in!"
"When I decided that I was going to release "Get Off" as a single, I knew I wanted to switch it up and offer something new and fresh for radio. The fact that this song is a one-sided yearning for someone, my natural instinct was the find that "someone" and have them spill their side of the story on the track. I've been a huge fan of Jadyn and Orion's work for the longest time and always wanted to work with him. When I knew I wanted to remix "Get Off", he was on top of the list of potential features but our paths hadn't really crossed before so I was a teeny, tiny bit hesitant to reach out. That very same week where I'm pondering over this, I get a call from Ms. Alicia Lena to do the "Beacon of Hope" song with her and, as fate would have it, Jadyn appeared on there too. We were suddenly on this big song together out of nowhere. I took that as a God-given sign. Little me eventually plucked up the courage and I took him to one side, told him about my idea and he pretty much agreed on the spot. I was so nervous over absolutely nothing! Once I sent the track over, I got it back within the hour. No tweaks needed. It's a true testament to his talent and I'm super excited and honored to have him on the song with me."
Jadyn wrote:"Shit, this one came outta nowhere, huh? There's a lot of artists you hear and just know you'd fit together, I ain't gonna lie, Layla wasn't one of those artists. I've heard her previous stuff and seen the talent there that's obvious, but it ain't even crossed my mind that our styles would ever match each others. But I feel like there was a tone shift when she dropped "The Human Experience", felt to me like she stepped away from the restrictions she put on herself. Her entire career has been elite level, but I think she crossed over into a whole other stratosphere with that new record. I was drawn to the artistry, the production choices and it was clear to me how every choice big or small was an important one to her. That's how iconic records are made and that's exactly what she did. "Get Off" was a stand out on that record because of how much of a risk it was, I think taking some of that innocence away in your art is the most freeing shit you can do. I still didn't see the link that would make me think our styles would vibe.
It just shows how much of an artist she is, she's thinking things on a whole different level to the rest of us and I thought she only considered it after we worked on that Alicia Lena track together. But she says she already had the idea in her mind way before that track brought us together, I still ain't sure if I totally believe her. It was the easiest collaboration I've been part of because the original track is so fuckin' vivid and clear. But I think our interpretations of the track are different from how she's described it to me. Her version is way more layered and subtle than how I took the track, there's a playfulness and cleverness to her lyrics. It feels legit to how men and women express themselves so differently, I think that's why it works. That shit's just a credit to Layla's vision for the track, ain't too many true artists in that mainstream pop realm, shit, she may even stand alone right now."
"GET OFF"All hot, bothered and tongue-tied
Too many freaky fantasies consuming my mind
Words mean nothing, actions will amplify
Unzip everything that I just can't say
Come a little closer, let me demonstrate
Unleash my inner workings, it's an exposé
How about some French kissing in the USA?
"Excusez-moi, ménage à trois?"
Skipped the class but I got straight As
I'll leave the door ajar tonight
In the hope that you will come inside
And if I should die before I wake
I pray the Lord my thighs to shake
Boy, tell me where the hell you get off
Turning me on and you're not even in the room
Planting subliminal seeds, knowing I'll fully bloom
Now, tell me where you get off
Penetrating through right into my dreams
Two hands on me, writhing in silk sheets
Yeah, that's how I get offYou should stay the night, I'll lay on a feast
All your favorite delights, mmm, bon appétit
Don't forget dessert, all sticky and sweet
Come take a bite of your little confection
I melt in the mouth with such discretion
A sugar coated, bite-sized blessing
I'll be what you like, so, what's your confession?
Saint or freak? Sinner or priest?
Anything to get us on the road of ascension
I'll leave the door opened wide
In the hope that you will slide inside
And if I should die before I wake
I pray the Lord my walls to quake
Boy, tell me where the hell you get off
Turning me on and you're not even in the room
Planting subliminal seeds, knowing I'll fully bloom
Now, tell me where you get off
Penetrating through right into my dreams
Two hands on me, writhing in silk sheets
Yeah, that's how I get offFancy helping me out of this negligée?
Don't give a damn about what the neighbors will say...
Yeah, we just flick the switch when I come through
All over that dick you wanna consume
Girl, you know I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want you
Every session like a workout
Our names on repeat
You know I’ve got an appetite for something sticky and sweet
Every bead of sweat, got us feeling the heat
You holding onto me for dear mercy, I’mma give you sweet relief
Manicured nails gripping onto silk sheets
Thighs shake like earthquakes
When our two souls meet
Vibrato from an Alto
Got you begging “harder” and screaming out to let go
Voice in bloom with an echo
Ass got that bounce when you let go
Yeah, don’t get it twisted, I like you insisting
Hands all over this
Like it’s your main mission
Craving that action, like this is your passion
Throwing that ass with the bounce back like nobodies business
Every position, until we’re both finished
With you under submission
Perfect vision
Wet, sticky and sweet
Got you panting in sweet relief
Taste so fucking sweet
Never wanna stop
Yeah, show me how you get offBoy, tell me where the hell you get off
Turning me on and you're not even in the room
Planting subliminal seeds, knowing I'll fully bloom
Now, tell me where you get off
Penetrating through right into my dreams
Two hands on me, writhing in silk sheets
Yeah, that's how I get offBoy, tell me where the hell you get off
Turning me on and you're not even in the room
Planting subliminal seeds, knowing I'll fully bloom
Now, tell me where you get off
Penetrating through right into my dreams
Two hands on me, writhing in silk sheets
Yeah, that's how I get offWhere do you get off?
Hmmmm, na, na, na, na, na na
Come get me off
Hmmmm, na, na, na, na, na na
