"Drone doom" as a genre, is largely a misrepresentation of the drone, for it can appear in all forms of music to some degree. Bagpipes have drone pipes that each blare out a continues note; likewise the pipe organ uses pedals and stops to control drones; Sitars, and other Indian instruments too.
Anyway, I like the drone doom because a) it's not so full of metal bravado and cock-waving and b) I prefer longer, better notes, to shorter, less important notes.
I can remember discussing about "drone" a while ago on the old forums with you, but I just can't be bothered now. You like it, I think it's pretentious shite. To each their own huh? I don't know, most metal strikes me as being a ridiculous pantomime, with grunting machos on one end, and scrawny albino nerds on the other. I don't see why it's pretentious to play long slow notes but not pretentious to write songs about Middle-Earth and throw in a novelty folk instrument or two to catch some publicity, or whatever else. It's a double standard is all I'm saying. tension101 wrote:Regan wrote:My favorite lately would be All That Remains. Also, I know he isn't metal but Marilyn Manson put out a new song today. He won't never be able to make an album like Antichrist Superstar again. Bleh, MM got old after his first album. It's the same shit over and over with him. That's literally the most ridiculous statement I've heard today. Portrait of an American Family to Antichrist Superstar is like two different bands. And then instead of continuing in an Antichrist vein, he absorbs glamrock and synthpop into the aesthetic and Mechanical Animals is a world away. And Holy Wood is a for the most part a contemplative, melancholy record. You're clearly wrong. Edited by user 03 April 2009 06:39:01(UTC)

Well Holy Wood is actually my favourite. Antichrist is a bit immature and, well, teen-angsty, to my post-teenage ears. |

Eh, I don't know, I just don't like him much. |
Too much leather chair is unsightly and greatly increases your risk of leather-smell. |

Epic bump....instead of starting a new one and all that..
Any Fear Factory fans out there? Just heard 'Powershifter' off their upcoming album. Thought it sounded pretty good, though pretty much the same FF formula. Then again anything that comes after 'Transgression' is by default an instant classic personally. That was just utter shit. I love Gene Hoglan but you can't really tell the difference between him and Herrera on this.

Huge metal fan here. I will happily listen to any subgenre (except deathcore etc).
Favorite band is Opeth, though I rarely listen to anything after Still Life. |

CANDLEMASS are in my top five bands evar, the first four albums are simply jawdropping (although "Ancient Dreams" is definitely the weakest of 'em). The last two albums (from 2007 and 2009) were okayish, but the 2005 reunion album annihilated. Great, great disc. If you'd be interested in checking them out, my advice would be to start with "Epicus Doomicus Metallicus", "Nightfall", and "Tales of Creation".

Yeah, can't disagree with the recommendation on Candlemass 2005 comeback, that album is just full of killer riffs. |

Gave it a spin earlier today for the first time in a year or so, and it's still one heavy mofo of an album. Love the production on it as well: it's really heavy, but without all the nasty compression (like on "King of the Grey Islands" from 2007). Tracks like "Seven Silver Keys", "Black Dwarf", "Copernicus", and "Witches" are all CANDLEMASS classics.

I don't mind them. I love listening to them in short sprints of time, but its kinda like the Misfits or Hatebreed for me. Love em' to death, but I can't stand listening to them for more than 4 or 5 songs.
