So I was sketching out a story arc for Axiom to take and part of it has them releasing a commercial and critical failure that got me wondering:
Do you roleplay flops?

I use the game to keep a discography for this band but was planning on roleplaying the album as a flop regardless of what it does in game. Who else is not afraid to give their characters a dose of morality and imperfection now and then? It always seems like we see the releases doing so well but you never see a thread like "Band releases commercial failure" (or at least I can't remember one).

I made my self quite clear.

Calling your album a commercial flop would be unrealistic. It's not how you're support to represent your label. Maybe if you make a thread where a gossip magazine or website calls it a flop then it would be different.

The fact is I wouldn't want to call my stuff a flop. I like to succeed in the game and if that I did, show that I did. Not contradict myself and say something that is not true.

It would make a good roleplay. No offence meant, but it's nice to see people screw up, because it's not realistic that an artist does well at everything (this is what writers and roleplayers call "Mary Sue"), even if the game says you have. I hardly use the game for roleplay anyway. Just can't work the two together, it's too scratchy.

I don't really use the game for roleplay purposes. It is more to keep track of all the music I have released and make sure I don't release too much stuff too quickly. I never said I was going to come out and say "oh man we failed" I was simply going to rp that the album failed. Also we have no label so that doesn't really matter to me.

If I bothered to replay my bands would have no concern for the success of any release, nor would the game be an accurate reflection of that, because Mana Gunray Serpentine are the type of band that would never sell millions of records, even if they put out a million actual records. Yet in the game they're successful (or they were when I was playing regularly).

If there were no restrictions, I'm pretty sure Mana Gunray Serpentine would be putting out albums with one 77 minute song, then others with 99 three second songs.

Well see, you control that. If you are making yourself popular each region to the fullest, of course your albums are going to sell millions.

By having a popularity of maybe 60 (or less) in each region or higher in the ones you want to be more successful might satisfy you more.

If you really want to screw yourself that badly let your popularity fall badly once in a while, but those who do want to always be successful and keep at it because they feel like their character deserves success shouldn't have to stop. Especially if your artist is a Pop artist and you work hard for your album concepts and singles. And for example Stephanie Fierce has yet to have an album go #1 in the US. People don't always do well at "Everything".

The point I'm trying to make is that it should be the persons choice, do what you feel like and enjoy the game you however you want to enjoy it. Whether it means purposely flopping your artist or making them successful. Either one wouldn't make a difference on how good you can make a roleplay.

Again you are assuming that I only roleplay the results of the game which isn't true. If you want to make your artist perfect and without a single failure then do it. I however agree with bikz, it makes for interesting roleplay and story arcs and it isn't realistic for an artist to have fantastic success on every album.

Heh, this reminds me of Kamikaze Kate on The Dorc's charts. "Lower Ratings = Better Songs", with less than 3,000 sales, stuck permanently at the bottom of The Dorc 2007 chart. Ah, memories. (: Kate was a fun experiment - basically, did the polar opposite of what I should to make her an artist worth anything ingame.

I am not assuming that, I am assuming that those who post stats about their albums and singles use the game for that. otherwise you're just making it up. From what It looks like you're not even reading what I'm saying. I said this and I'll put it in quote

And that's bullshi*t that an artist cannot have success at everything when they first come out. When Madonna came out she was popping out more hits than my character Stephanie Fierce and kept it up through her career. Same thing with Beyonce, same thing with Michael Jackson. What if I want my character to be like the next Madonna or something?

My point is that, it's a matter of how you roleplay in which makes it good. Whether you do good or bad in the game you can make your roleplay's good. Unless you're just jealous that person is better at the game than you are. Because this game does requires some mental strategy if you want your stuff to be successful.

Stop freaking being so technical here. There shouldn't be a certain way of roleplaying. No wonder roleplay is freaking dead. As long as you're following the rules Role play however you want.

You should definitely roleplay, it would be awesome. That little interview thing you did a while ago was actually pretty good and a lot more interesting than most roleplays at the moment.

Hmph. Fair enough. I just think you'd bring something different to the roleplay section and you'd make it a lot more fun, and I think you're not really giving it enough of a chance - your roleplays don't have to be all answering questions. You can roleplay your live shows, but if your not the average band just do it in a different way. I mean I've roleplayed a show from the perspective of a shroom'd up punker before and that was REALLY abstract and weird. Not everything has to be 'realistic' as long as it's not just stupid. But I guess if you don't like it you don't like it, up to you.

Not sure how you'd do a live show except just a description of it. That I could probably do. But it's such an abstract kind of a band that to even pin this stuff down kind of lessens the interest. It's just cooler to just imagine how weird they could be. As for my other bands, I guess I could do them, but Lobedoctor would be quite weird as well, and Temple Lantern Caravel would just be boring. Maybe a label thing, I don't know, like a press release with madeup forthcoming releases... Actually, now that does sound like an idea I could get behind.

That was pretty fun. Think I might do one of these Newsletter things every month or so. Kind of a spoof on some of my favourite record labels. Plus, an excuse to play with Photoshop some more.
