I must admit, topics of "best musician" are probably one of the biggest music discussions I'd rather not have. I'm not a musician, I don't know what makes a guitarist (or drummer or bassist) "good", and I try to avoid talking from a point of ignorance. And besides, I think song writing is a much more important skill than actual musical ability. Who cares if you are a virtuoso? I'm sure Karl Sanders from Nile is a great guitar player, everyone seems to think so but know what? He writes fucking shite, emotionless music and so I wish people would fuck off talking about Nile.

Well yes, I myself treat these sort of things as more of a 'favourites' thing because quite frankly I wouldn't know a tremolo pick from a blast beat such is my knowledge about music. All I know from my side of things, from what I can hear from music, is that say Karl Sanders as you mentioned is a very talented guitarist. Then again what would I know

1. Mike Portnoy, hands down the greatest drummer I know
2. John Bonham, biggest influence on my playing since I began about 9 years ago
3. Paul Mazurkiewicz, he hand-made death metal drumming
4. Neil Peart, because of his skillz :p
5. Ariën Van Weesenbeek, quite an unknown drummer, he plays for Dutch metal bands Epica and God Dethroned. He is an amazing drummer, and a nice guy too. He should be more well-known I think.

And an honorable mention for Gene Hoglan, that man is a machine!

Man, that was one awful drummer. I love watching videos like this, though, because they make me feel so good. The guy couldn't even keep his time steady, not to mention his over-reliance on sextuplet and 32nd-note rolls. The guy basically played the same incredibly boring beat all over his drum set with no real transitions, let alone smooth ones.

God. That was hilarious. I hope that wasn't you.

I just listened to that for the first time...no drummer myself, but it didn't sound right. That blast beat was shit.

For me it is all about jazz drummers, and the greatest is Buddy Rich.

Plus he beat a muppet in a drum off.

He is also a great drummer when he isn't soloing.
