Today I'm gonna start producing some of my friends on some rap songs they want to record. I'm about to start making money from it by telling everyone at my school $10 and they can record with my stuff I got to do it with. Also starting my rap career today haha. No joke. |

Since, my various work in progress albums remain unfinished, I think I might just shove as many of the not-that-terrible odds and ends that I did do this year and a bit, in a collection I have entitled "a Maelström of Regret". I think that about sums up my feelings on what I achieved this year...
Digging through, I've found a few odds and ends, some of it actually reasonably interesting. Burnt Gargoyle is an okay piece of ebow & drone-age Mecha King Ghidora vs the Metal Eating Termites of Uranus is an ultra-noisy piece of improvised prepared guitar. Gear Drift Thru Smoky Bedroom is probably the best piece of noise collage I've ever done. Pylon Field is an okay piece of sparse ambient guitar twangery. Sigil Black is retro synthy ambience. And I'll probably find some more stuff, and maybe do an abstract collage of other bits and bobs and at least I'll have something to show for the past twelve months. |

I've started working on a metal orchestra of sorts.Like symphonic metal but without sounding like a film score.I guess it would be sort of like Dimmu Borgir but much heavier and more technical with more strings.Technically I think it would be an opera because it has vocals.I'd say it's a mix of classical, black metal,a little doom, and of course death metal.I plan for it to be at least 10 minutes, eventually reaching about half an hour with 3 10 minute movements, it'll be like a concept album but only one song, it'll probably take a year or so to make and I probably won't be done editing or finishing it until well into my college years.I started making guitar parts and soon I'll begin the piano and strings which will be virtual with my computer, I plan to go to the Berklee college of music and they have studios and practice rooms so I'd probably be able to get real strings then and a drum set too. When I'm done with the strings of the first movement I'll post it here because that'll be the general outline of the song. |

Wow, after coming up with the compilation idea, I was fiddlin' about with me guitar and I accidentally wrote a little two string improv which I named "The Moth Shattered Into a Million Pieces". Can't be bothered to work out the key, but it's on the 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 8th, 10th, 12th frets of my 4th string (itself tuned to Db) alternating each pick with the open 3rd string (Ab)... Actually hang on... That's whatever key Ab, A, B, Db, Eb, E, Gb, Ab works out to. Which is apparently Ab Major Phrygian Mode... Sweet, because I don't even know how to pronounce that one. Also, man that Ab-A octave+semitone dissonance is really menacing and awesome, like being stabbed in the shoulder with a poisonous blade Mr. Underhill. Edited by user 24 December 2009 10:19:58(UTC)

I was in a band with my brother for the longest time (pretty much from early middle school until mid-high school; I am well into college by now). We started by playing random rock favorites. Most of the songs were really bad that we played. Like, we did one song by Godsmack? God, I was a stupid child. Then, we slowly evolved our own sound as we kicked everyone else out. I'm a drummer and my brother has enough equipment to create drones and loops for himself to play over on the fly, so we sort of evolved into a technical post-metal kind of outfit. Neither of us had ever heard post-metal before. We just both had big boners for Tool at the time and loved doom metal and improvisation. And Meshuggah.
My brother eventually left for Texas when he married my sister-in-law, so I started a couple solo things that I still work on. One is a noise/avant-garde project called A Tangle of Skin. For that one, I focus more on layering found sounds and clips from other musicians. Xenophany, you know.
Another is an unnamed progressive metal project that tends towards really heavy, long things. One song that I had worked on for about a year was about half an hour long called "Domain of the Hunter". There was a second piece that I had written that I was trying to nail a set arrangement for, wavering between 15 and 40 minutes depending on how much I wanted to include. I wound up scrapping those two songs and keeping a couple notes on riffs and things that appeared in them. I might use them later, but that is sort of on hold.
I write and record ambient, atmospheric pieces that occasionally include fusion-inspired drumwork and mild guitar work. That has been getting the most workout lately. Those pieces also tend to be quite long, but mainly because it is intended for really immersive, atmospheric listening. I probably don't get there, but you know, you try.
And the last project is sort of a repository for my flowery prog rock and fusion pieces that I write with a group of people. That is probably the most fulfilling to work on, but it takes the longest to craft a song and really nail an arrangement down. But it's a fun process.
And then on the side, I write little folk, math rock and metal bits. I am not sure if they'll wind up getting incorporated into one of the projects or if they will evolve on their own. Or drift off completely. Who knows.
Finally, I'm trying to locate bandmates for these projects so that I can finally get proper recordings of them done instead of just having stacks of sound files or notation or jotted notes or lyrics for songs, and you know, actually play them for other people. Nothing is worse than having written songs that you can't play properly for others. So yeah, lots of music projects. Nothing will come of most of them, but it will be a lot of fun getting a band together and seeing which ideas pass muster and which done. As of now, I only have one album done, and it is a noise one. Pretty basic, too. But I finished it when I was 16, so I am fond of it, even if most of it is pretty bad.
