Assuming you got the Ryko version, rather than finding a long out-of-print pressing of the original album, the drums and bass on the record were re-recorded in the 80s, which gives the album a frankly bizarre sound. I'd love to find the original, because I like the songs, but the 50s style do-wop does not work with 80s style drum and bass recordings. the album pays homage to the sounds frank grew up listening to in the '50s. did you ever notice his high school senior portrait on the back of the cover? personally, i think its a very underrated album.

just ordered a couple of eels albums (daisies of the galaxy and blinking lights and other revelations) along with:
another sunny day - london weekend (reissue) shop assistants - will anything happen (reissue) television personalities - and don't the kids just love it (reissue)
three essential pop records imo.
also; nice purchase there, springchicken. blood on the tapes is amazing - especially "idiot wind" blows my mind every time. |

I did notice, and I'm well aware of these facts. My point is, Frank re-recorded the drum and bass tracks in the 80s with his then bassist and drummer of choice, and the result is bass and drum tracks that sound like they were recorded in the 80s, married to music recorded in the 60s, aping music from the 50s... It's not the right sound for the album I think - especially when you hear the difference with the tracks that are also on Freak Out. |

yeah. i know what you were saying. i was just making small talk.
the album was released on CD twice. once from "zappa records" and once on "rykodisc". however, i'm not sure whether both versions feature the rerecorded drum tracks, but i do know "cruising with ruben & the jets" is not the only album zappa retooled years after its initial release.

Certainly not. Hot Rats is apparently extremely different from the original, but I haven't heard the original so I don't know. |

A whole bunch since last time I posted, but notably:
A 4 disc Chopin set for £6, which is awesome. Flaming Lips - Embryonic limited furry edition (still not arrived - damn you Warner Brothers). King Crimson - the first three of the 40th anniversary editions, Lizard (new stereo mix is incredible), Red, and massive 5CD/1DVD In the Court of the Crimson King box set still to arrive. Do Make Say Think - Other Truths finally arrived, is awesome as expected. Kayo Dot - Choirs of the Eye, bought from the band themselves last month at the Glasgow show (where, due to a fuckup, half the band was stuck in France, and they had to play Tartar Lamb material instead) Aphex Twin - I Care Because You Do... and Richard D. James album |

Spiritualized's Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space and Let It Come Down ^ great! purchased joy division's les bains douches 18 december 1979 on a whim yesterday, pleasantly surprised. eleven (!) bowie studio albums also turned up in the mail ( hunky dory- scary monsters, ryko editions) along with the shangri-las myrmidons of melodrama. \o/ |

On boxing day went into town and picked up three Classic FM discs for £15, namely John Adams' Shaker Loops & Chaiman Dances (which irritatingly also has a Philip Glass and a Steve Reich piece on it, as if there isn't enough John Adams to fill a disc...), Beethoven's 5th and 7th symphonies, and Satie's Piano Music including Gymnopédies and Gnossiennes.
Oh, and when I get back to Glasgow, the first Old Man Gloom record should have arrived, Meditations in B. |
