I'm just curious. Do you have strategies to save money when living on your own or when living with your parents? Do you even need to save money at all? Share your ideas and thoughts on the best ways to save money. Whether is for food, clothing, rent, electronics etc.

My mother pays my clothes (she even begs to buy clothes for me sometimes :P) and my food. All the money I save comes as Christmas/birthday gifts, and I usually keep it, so I always have money saved. |

Yeah, I do chores, but still my parents buy my most of my stuff, but they won't give me much money often if I want to hang out with my friends, so that's why I do chores. |

My weekly checks from my computer consulting job at school are used like this:
40% Saved in savings account 10% saved in Roth IRA 30% Put into checking account for use on essentials (food, clothes, rent, etc.) 20% Put into checking account for use on anything else
Eventually I would like to move some of that 40% savings into active investments, but not until after I get out of school. |

That's good for you. I don't have to pay the bills. My financial aid and scholarships pay them. I don't make a lot of money, but I don't actually have to pay my rent or for food or for school. My Financial aid and scholarships cover the cost of school and all living expenses (rent, food, etc.) regardless of whether I live on or off campus. I just set some aside in case I go on a bit of a spending spree early in the semester (since the excess aid money for rent and food and so on is deposited into my checking account) that I can pay everything without needing loans or family help. Also dorms, at least at IUB, are not cheap and are more expensive than an off campus residence. I live off campus in an apartment. |

I'm getting a job after the holidays.I usually make money through 2 ways, birthday/christmas/seeing family members I haven't seen in a while, and selling pot.I usually split my money 75/25 with 75 percent of the income going to the bank and 25 for myself. |

Also I'm pretty sure dorms are not cheap and they are not free that's for sure.I've been looking at colleges and their tuition costs and most dorms are between 3-4,000 dollars for a semester and seeing as most people go for 2 semesters that's between 6-8,000 per year.Unless of course you pay for a dorm for 1 semester and then rent an apartment which is probably cheaper, unless of course you can afford an apartment right off the bat. |

At IUB dorms are about $4,500 a semester and that is before the required meal plan (running anywhere from $2,900-$3600 for the year). Also all freshmen are required to live a full two semesters to live in the dorm unless they transfer in the second semester, then they are only required one semester. |
