Band talk -
1. Make a first thread, just talking about their music - the band/artist, the genre, the latest single/album, and such as. You can do this straight away, or delay it until you know what you're saying, or have new music. Usually best to type a bit, spend some time on it, people lap up detail. Oh, and write in good English.
2. Reply to other people's threads. This is the best way of making friends, look at someone's thread and give a reply, something you liked about their writing.
Other roleplaying -
1. Band members or solo artist name, you have it/them, from your ingame account. Add some personalities to the names - only has to be basic one-liners to start with. (When I was new, I started with my first band as, "Somerset is a 'nice girl'", "Nickola is an insane hottie", "Kaethe likes mashed potato". Now, there is a lot more to these characters, as I built up over the years.) If you're stuck, just look at yourself, the people around you in real life, or your favourite famous people, what sticks out about them? Use it.
2. Once you have those personalities, talk as them. If you're really new to roleplaying, this thread is a good place to start, just talk, sit down, order a drink - or notice someone else who's posted recently (unless it's Taylor'n'Hannah, they only talk to each other), and say hello. If you want to start with RPing, this is the place to be.
Do NOT -
1. Make "perfect" characters. You may have a string of #1s behind you ingame - so what. You can of course show this off, but this will not make you better than anyone else. Also, even if we're not talking ingame, make sure your character has some flaws, or slips up occasionally. Nobody's too good to be true. Making character perfection is called "Mary Sue" and most advanced roleplayers find them hilarious, and just plain stupid.
2. Start with "drunk and high" or whatever. Yes, we know, rockstars do go for substance abuse, and there's nothing wrong with your characters having tried some, but it's been shown off so many times that it's not interesting any more (and probably never was), it's just plain annoying.
