Can't say I like a single one of those. Anyway, here are mine:

2000: Soulfly - Primitive
2001: Tool - Lateralus
2002: Killswitch Engage - Alive Or Just Breathing (By far their best)
2003: Lot of great albums (Machine Head, Arch Enemy, etc.) but I'm gonna go with Lamb Of God - New American Gospel
2004: Mastodon - Leviathan
2005: Nine Inch Nails - With Teeth
2006: Pinkly Smooth - Unfortunate Snort
2007: Machine Head - The Blackening
2008: Opeth - Watershed
2009: Behemoth - Evangelion

Gonna have to go with Machine Head as my favorite

2000 - Some good albums in 2000. Honourable mentions go to Shellac - 1000 Hurts, Raging Speedhorn - Raging Speedhorn, Dandy Warhols - Thirteen Tales From Urban Bohemia, Deftones - White Pony, Deltron 3030 - Deltron 3030, Modest Mouse - The Moon & Antarctica (my favourite MM release), Queens of the Stone Age - Rated R, Eyehategod - Confederacy of Ruined Lives, Outkast - Stankonia, Crowbar - Equilibrium, Sugababes debut album, & a very, very close second place would go to Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven. But ultimately the answer has to be At The Drive-In - Relationship of command, the only one of those albums I was actually listening to in 2000 and have, even a decade later, yet to get bored of.

2001 - Opeth - Blackwater Park is the winner this year and it's a wee bit easier than 2000 to decide if I'm honest. Honourable mentions for Dog Fashion Disco - Anarchists of Good Taste, Arch Enemy - Wages Of Sin (the only good Angela Gossow-era album), White Stripes - White Blood Cells, Crowbar - Sonic Excess in its Purest Form, Fantômas - The Director's Cut, Converge - Jane Doe, Akercocke - Goat Of Mendes, System of a Down - Toxicity & Emperor - Prometheus.

2002 - A year with a lot of solid releases but nothing really standout to my ears, Down - Down II: A Bustle in Your Hedgerow wins by virtue of 8 years of being awesome. Eels - Souljacker, Teeth of Lions Rule the Divine - Rampton, Mastodon - Remission, Tegan & Sara - If It Was You, Dillinger Escape Plan - Irony Is A Dead Scene EP, Isis - Oceanic, Porcupine Tree - In Absentia, Jurassic 5 - Power In Numbers, Sigur Rós - () & Bloodbath - Resurrection Through Carnage are all worthy mentions.

2003 - 2003 may well have been poorer than 2002. Which in turn was hardly better than 2001. A few mediocre years on the trot now. The winner this year? Well, it was a two horse race between Dizzee, but ultimately the winner is The Mars Volta - De-Loused in the Comatorium. SunnO))) - White1, Turbonegro - Scandinavian Leather, Metallica - St Anger (I hated it at the time. Now? Well frankly I think it's a hilarious piece of music. And 2003 is really lacking in tunes), Dizzee Rascal - Boy In Da Corner, Sugababes - Three (possibly even better than their debut), Explosions In The Sky - The Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place get mentions.

2004 - Fantômas - Delìrium Còrdia, Exodus - Tempo of the Damned, Modest - Good News for People Who Love Bad News, Brian Wilson - SMiLE, SunnO))) - White2, Isis - Oceanic Remixes/Reinterpretations, Dillinger Escape Plan - Miss Machine, Steve Earle - The Revolution Starts Now, Mastodon - Leviathan, Tegan & Sara - So Jealous, Old Man Gloom - Christmas, Tom Waits - Real Gone. At the time I'd have said that Leviathan was my album of the year, utterly loved it, but then I also utterly loved Ulver - Blood Inside and that was responsible for my taste in music really broadening to take in alot of non-metally things. It's also fucking phenomenal.

I'll do 2005, 2006, 2007 & 2008 later. It's too early to do 2009 yet. I'm almost tempted to say it's too early for 2008.

I was speaking to Cam, after an awesome trip out into the snowy Festival Park for some incredibly cool long-exposure photographs, and I thought I had done a list of best albums for every year of my life. Turns out it was not albums but songs, and not my entire life, just the first 20 years - for a theoretical compilation that you would make and swap with all your friends. I'll do my actual list later (as a preview, Old Man Gloom - Seminar III: Zozobra is 2001's and album of the decade almost certainly). In the meanwhilst, here's that song, 20 songs from the first 20 years of my life. The disclaimer is that it's not necessarily the very best song, just the one that I would put on a compilation album of the first 20 years of my life. I tried to pick short songs at first. Then I fucked up and included 20 and 30 minute songs. So sue me.

1986
Paul Simon - I Know What I Know

1987
Yes - Rhythm of Love

1988
Frank Zappa - Jesus Thinks You're a Jerk

1989
Ozric Tentacles - Ayurvedic

1990
The Pogues - Hell's Ditch

1991
Primus - Fish On (Fisherman Chronicles Part II)

1992
Faith No More - Everything's Ruined

1993
Dinosaur Jr. - Out There

1994
Pink Floyd - Marooned

1995
Mr. Bungle - Carry Stress in the Jaw

1996
Dr. Octagon - Blue Flowers Revisited

1997
The Prodigy - Diesel Power

1998
Meshuggah - Concatenation

1999
Fly Pan Am - L'espace au sol est redessiné par d'immenses panneaux bleus

2000
Godspeed You Black Emperor! - Storm

2001
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum - Powerless

2002
Sigur Rós - Untitled #7 (aka Dauðalagið)

2003
Gorillaz - Slow Country

2004
UR (Secret Chiefs 3) - Anthropomorphosis: Boxleitner

2005
The Mars Volta - Cassandra Gemini

You guys lack some taste.... No offence.... But the best album of 2003 and 2005 easily go to the White Stripes....

2003- Elephant by The White Stripes
2005- Get Behind Me (Satan) by The White Stripes

Both albums displayed no repetitiveness what so ever and easily display the most "branching out" that any band has in the past two decades.

I actually can agree with 2003, now that I think about it, but not 2005. 30 Seconds To Mars's A Beautiful Lie was had very deep and emotional songs, and even though they carried a touch of pop, so what? it was still dark and very deep, and Jared Leto is an incredible singer, and 30stm are master of anything they put their mind to. Although, I'm not really digging their new album. Don't get me wrong, it sounds fine, just it's not their style, nor is it one that I like.

Meh. Neither are particularly interesting and what, branching out? They sound like White Stripes records. Not really what I'd call "branching out". No, in 2003, Deloused In The Comatorium is far better to my ears.

2005 was a good year off the top of my head so I can't see the White Stripes even making the shortlist then either.

Sorry, this is the "favourite albums" thread, not the "debatably best-with-no-winners albums" thread.

Foreword/Disclaimer:

I thought I'd do one pick, plus two honourable mentions per year. Then some years needed more than that. On reflection 2007 was nuts. Most of these are results I would not have put in my annual top 10 for that year at the time, but like fine wine the albums age and mature.
