Gore Themed Death/Grind From The Bay Area

UserPostedImage

2009 - Present

Suicidal Maniacs formed around the talents of two fragmented bands from the greater Bay Area, the classic thrash/death group Hell Awaits (Frank, Wayne and Matt were key members) and underground hardcore legends Boxed In (Jason & Chris). They united under the common interests of hockey and ripping the music industry a well needed new asshole. From day one in Matt's garage with 2 Marshall stacks, a ludicrously large drum kit, a bass amp worth next to nothing, a PA Jason had jacked from one of his ex-band mates, and later in the day a visit from the SFPD, their goal hasn't been to recapture the original hardcore aesthetics, but instead apply it to their unique style of punk/metal and show the so called "hardcore" superstars of today what the real meaning of hardcore is.

"I used to look up to bands like fucking Failed Youth and The Prisoners, but listening to their new stuff, I'm thinking, what the fuck happened? Where's the punk? I don't care if we ever 'make it', as long as we never turn to doing that sort of bullshit"

-Jason

"If there's one goal for me in life, it's to smash the faces in of all those fucking metal pricks going up and taking 20 minute solos and shit like that. It's cool to do like a little Dimebag or Slayer thing, cause that adds to a song as a whole, instead of just acting like a launch pad to "guitar stardom". What a fucking joke. There's a fine line between, 'Hey, let's jam on this' and 'It's time for my GUITAR SOLO', and douche bags in bands like Black Gold Reign and The Nimrods are definitely wayyy passed the line where it aint cool anymore. Personally, although I hate his music, I'd rather be like Ryan Ross Hernandez and do what ever the fuck I want to then going with some fucking cliche. It's the difference between Slayer (God) and Anthrax (Cunts)."

-Frank

March 16th - Hey fuckers, here's the set for out debut show. Arrive hammered.

Suicidal Maniac (Suicidal Tendencies Cover)
Thirsty & Miserable (Black Flag Cover)
All I Had I Gave (Crowbar Cover)
War Ensemble (Slayer Cover)
Refuse/Resist (Sepultura Cover)
Life Is Pain (Merauder Cover)
I'm In Pain (Obituary Cover)
Evil Minds (Dirty Rotten Imbeciles)

March 17th - First song, play it till your ears bleed, or till some pussy Trivium fan calls the cops.

Hey fuckers, check out our first original. Yeah, it's only half audible, but that's the way we like it. 1 minute 14 seconds of pure shit, but hey, someone might think it's cool. You got something against that then you're gay.

Hard To Swallow - (1:14)

The song starts with just a hum of noise in the background, slowly fading in to reveal itself as a heavy as fuck drum beat, mainly relying on the bare-bone technique of creating a triplet rhythm with two parts double bass one part thrashing quarter notes one the hi-hat and snare. Wayne rips into a chunky and metallic guitar chord, slightly of beat, giving a hectic and flying-by-the-seat-if-their-pants vibe. The two half transition half crash their way into the beginnings of a verse. Wayne, Frank and Chris unify on a pummeling hardcore riff, as Matt switches over to a vicious, simple-as-can-be thrash beat, as the foursome continue to charge forward at breakneck speed, with the occasional twang of a bass or accidently muffled guitar squeal. Jason comes in on vocals, barking in the vein of Max Cavalera's signature hardcore-shout/death-scream mix style. It's difficult to tell apart the verse from chorus, for in the most basic form, both are just a collection of power-chord based thrashy riffs, laid over ferocious drum beats and blasting fills, yet the subtle chord changes manage to keep the song interesting. The Suicidal Maniacs take off into a wall of sound, loosely characterized by sustained screams, lightning fast riffing and the occasionally audible guitar lick or two. Wayne takes off on a set of three or four guitar solos, roughly encompassing 15 seconds, which aren't much more than slightly clever collections of random notes, being that neither he or any of the others have any formal training. Jason warns all listening to "keep off his back", and the track slows slightly to a chugging one note riff, backed by a pounding tom beat. They slip in and out of being a jumble of noise, and the track ends with a slippery collection of notes and fills, concluding on a powerful thud.

Lyrics:
Why you messing around with me
Pushin me around
Values changing
But I can't get caught in it today
We won't lose with what we've got
Cause we'll just sit and watch it all rot
Keep your ideas
But keep your distance from me
Keep off my back cause the things you do I don't wanna see
I don't wanna see
Wanna see how far I can go
Test my patience see what I know
Just not happy with nothing to do
Getting bold when there's more than two

Lyric Meaning: It's a song dedicated to Failed Youth, and it's talking about how people were counting on someone to pick up the torch and give us something new, and these dudes not only try to bore us to death with their folk shit, but they try to shove it down our throats and be all, 'Hey, we're hardcore'. Shut the fuck up and start playing for the indie kids who actually give a shit about you.

I hate your style, your musicality, the way you present yourselves as decadent and excessive rockers. I hate all that metal god shit, much rather be down to Earth. I hate the guitar solos that go on for 20 minutes, it's a band, not a guitar seminar. I hate the attitude that a song is a thought out piece, I look at a song as some dudes jamming on something cool. I hate it when people use all these scales that have different "moods" to them, the only mood comes from the way you play something. I hate dudes who need to have a Mesa Boogie rack and 20 effects pedals, cause I can sure as hell bet you that I sound exactly the same through a Peavy 5150 as I do through the $50 piece of shit I pawned last week. That enough?

Jimmy:Haha I play through a 5150 with nothing else except wah every once in a while.I'm against long guitar solos my longest one is 3 minutes which is not that long compared to some. And I don't choose a scale I just sorta guess.Thinking that a song that is thought out sucks is just stupid by the way because that's how they were originally. And I don't think I'm a metal god, I'm just a short Finnish dude who likes drinking and being naked.

Jesus dude, do I have to spell it out? You might be one of the coolest, down to earth people out there, put I hate your whole scene and would love nothing better than to see it die a slow death, just like it did in the mid-90's. Now you better come to the show, cause I'm hell bent on deciding what to think of you as a person, know that my opinion as a fellow musician is cemented in stone.

Yeah, they were pretty sick. Saw a couple shows, rioted afterwords, you know, what's expected of a young punk. Anyway, all 5 of us pull the whole ass hole act out for artistic reasons, cause that's the kind of fucking way we feel like expressing our beliefs. Really, behind the mask, an ideal day for me aint maybe all that punk. See a show maybe, chill at a bar with friends, play hockey, jam. It isn't like I'm pretending to be someone I'm not, it's just I have certain feelings and ways I judge people from a music standpoint, and certain ways I feel about people outside of music. I may think you're a rad person, but hate you to death for playing in a metal band.

OOC: I made some timing mistakes, show hasn't happened yet, but just fast forward a day or so.

March 19th - 'Chopper Head' magazine reviews last night's debut show.

In the duration of my time at the Bay Area Hardcore Fest (which admittedly lasted barely through the third set), I found myself amid an angst-charged yet utterly predictable scene. You had your punks with a million piercings and massive spikes of neon dyed hair, the crossover kids, with their sleeveless band t-shirts and numerous tattoos, and a scatter of thrashers, sticking out like a sore thumb with gritty locks of hair and their cliche denim vests. The vibe was week at best when openers Revenge Is Bond took the stage, opting to cover every Anthrax and Pantera song known to man when their dose of hook infested poppy 3-chord "punk" failed to wow anyone. The second act, Animosity, was a bit better, choosing to change the pace by injecting a good serving of viscous crossover, drawing from equal parts Arise-era Sepultura and Bad Brains at their worst. But of all 3 I had the stomach to sit through, the Suicidal Maniacs confused me the most. Without any good way to summarize them, I've decided to just write up a track-by-track description.

They set-up all of their gear (2 Marshall rip-offs, a P.A. that looked like someone had took a huge shit all over, a bare-bones drum kit, containing only the most essential pieces plus a dis-proportionately high quality double-bass pedal [Probably worth the rest of the kit put together twice over] and an almost non-existent bass amp, if such a term can be disgraced enough to be associated with such a worthless piece of equipment) in plain sight, hooking up there instruments and opting to turn all the gear up to 10. Not very professional start, but definitely a "hard-core" way of doing things.

The house lights were to be kept on throughout the entire show, which came as a surprise at first when guitarist Wayne Novinec ripped into the first chord of 'Suicidal Maniac' by none other than Suicidal Tendencies (I can see a slightly annoying over riding theme). Any punk worth his piercings recognized the gritty riff, transformed from a hardcore classic to a crossover monster, verging at times on 90's groove metal. Novinec's playing was the culprit here, charging sloppy riffing into a overly distorted JCM800 wannabe head, and I was left torn, half enjoying the metallic ferocity of his style and half wishing I could distinguish more than 75% of the notes. It became aparent in the first few seconds nothing special had been done to alter the song, drummer Matt Lozinak's double bass fill coming in right on time, pulling off a surprisingly well done note-for-note cover. They more or less race to the bass break, which is handled rather sloppily by bassist Chris Jasta. Had it not been for intense crowd participation, the first shouts from Jason Byrne could very well have been lost in the wall of noise, which is shame because I would soon discover his voice carries a tone easily described as Max Cavalera breast fed on Marlboros. The verses bring nothing unexpected to the table, yet the punk attitude and playing mixed with a thrash backbone manages to give them an oddly memorable quality. Wayne Novinec and Frank Beattie share the duties of playing the guitar solos. Novinec goes first, playing a take off the original, throwing out any conventional guitar techniques and tossing in incredibly tasteful yet seemingly random notes. Beattie decides to throw down a less technically demanding squeal infested slab of guitar theory murder, done in the vein of Kerry King. The 2 only last for about 20 seconds, and I find myself both thanking god the atrocious guitar playing is done, yet yearning for the original and inspired solos to last for hours on end. Throughout all this madness, Matt Lozinak keeps them tied together with razor sharp drumming and bicep shredding fills. I get the sense he's the only one with any real training. The crowd has began to warm up a bit, and even I feel tempted to sing along to the well known chorus. As they wrap up the song, Byrne confronts the crowd, deciding to switch between barking at them in true anarchist fashion and addressing them as a down to earth guy talking to close friends.

'Suicidal Maniacs' was only a taste of what was to come. It is followed by 2 more 80's hardcore classics, the first of which being Black Flag's very own 'Thirsty & Miserable'. In contrasts to the last tune, this one is presented not as much as a song as a jam over the two chord progressions that recur throughout the song. They crowd is rough housing in true punk fashion, and you can almost see through Jason's eyes, as he describes a bunch of teens without enough alcohol to last them the rest of the day, and although the band was all over the place in a hectic frenzy of power chords, the emotion in the song almost made me feel like I was starting to itch and tremble from alcohol need. The next tune was the powerhouse 'All I Had I Gave' by Crowbar. The Suicidal Maniacs managed to strike a balance of the first 2 songs on this one, blending ferocious speed with the loose and easy double bass strokes of Matt Lozinak. The densely packed crowd sings along as if their lives were on the line, managing to further obscure the sound leaking out the PA.

The rest of the set continues at a similar pace. A few standouts were the downtuned version of Sepultura's classic 'Refuse/Resist' and the tide of distortion and blazing drums that comprised Slayer's 'War Ensemble'. The only massive stumble occurred on the final song, a crunchy and sloppy cover of 'Evil Minds' by the Dirty Rotten Imbeciles, which although guitarist Wayne Novinec leaped into the crowd to confront the thrower of a flying bottle, maintained the pounding intensity of the previous numbers.

Overall, the mix was horrendous, and the technique not much better, yet I think that's what made the show so splitting for me. I was so crossed by this show that I actually left the rest of the show just to write this. I think the Suicidal Maniacs are destined to end like Cannibal Corpse or Exodus, they'll never make it huge, but many within their genre shall know their name, and most, if not all, will hold them in high respect for staying true to their roots. Only time will truly tell though.

Hey fuckers, got some news that's gonna fuck your brains out. Were going death/grind. Fucking right, screw hardcore shit, we got a new style that'll come up your ass like a huge dick. Can't give away any music yet, but got some sick as fuck titles fir you to jack off over. Definitely goin for the gore theme. Got some lyrics for the track Impaled on The Wheel, just a taste of what's to come. (OOC: Make it all the way through without slightest bit of disgust, and you're one sick son of a bitch)

Crushing, Cranial, Contents - (4:04)
Involuntarily Pulpifying Of The Facial Regions - (3:42)
Impaled On The Wheel - (3:31)

'Impaled on The Wheel' Lyrics:

Early hours, open road, family of five on their way home
Having enjoyed a day in the sun, their encounter with gore has just begun
A homicidal fool not knowing left from right, now has the family in his sight
Trying to perceive if he's blind or insane, he steers his car into the other lane

Both of them collide, expressions horrified
Head on at full speed, the vultures will soon feed

The father of three was impaled on the wheel, as his skull became part of the dash
His eyeballs ejected his sight unaffected, he saw his own organs collapse
His seat belt was useless for holding him back, it simply cut him in two
Legs were crushed, out leaked pus as his spinal cord took off and flew
The mother took flight through the glass, and ended up impaled on a sign
Her intestines stretched from the car down the road for a quarter of mile

Fourth child on the way, won't live another day
Fetus on the road, with mangled little bones
Little children fly, not a chance wonder why
Smashed against the ceiling, all their skin burning and peeling
Shards of glass explode, chest and skull now implode
Corpses they've become, and graves will have to be dug

Underneath the wheels, burning rubber on your face
Bleeding from your eyes, the slaughtered victim lies
Knowing what he's done, he just backs up one more time
Laughing at the mess, a pile of meat in the street

One child left slowly dying now, arteries gushing blood
Now it's time to feed on flesh, the gore has just begun

Early hours, open road, the family of five on their way home
Having enjoyed a day in the sun, their encounter with gore has just begun
A homicidal fool not knowing left from right, now has the family in his sight
Trying to perceive if he's blind or insane,he steers the car into the other lane

The look of death in my eye
Surely no-one survive
Just a pile of mush
Left to dry in the sun

I see my fresh kill
Left in the road
Remains of your bodies
Mangled and torn

One child left slowly dying now, arteries gushing blood
Now it's time to feed on flesh, the gore has just begun

OOC: Yep, not much of titles person, thought I'd jack some CC stuff. And yeah, Cryptopsy is some seriously fucked up stuff, although CC's 'I Cum Blood' and far behind.

Very true, but I find ICB funny not scary.Cryptopsy's song Phobophile's first verse is about chopping 3 limbs off of someone when they pissed you off. Here's a snippet lol

In the kitchen
With a screaming triple amputee...
Its completion depends solely
On my needs...
Said amputee's stumps
Are my way of saying... "Thank you
Just for being you."
Its fear tastes better than its limbs.

Now while the lyrics aren't all "I'm going to dismantle you!" if you think about them for a second they are HIGHLY disturbing. And this is probably their least gory song.
