Anybody a fan of this genre?
Well this is the thread where you can post how much you like an alternative rock band, update us on some new alternative rock songs, and whatever you think you can do with this thread..

I had no idea that real, actual people used such a silly genre name to describe...well, a massively wide-ranging number of bands who sound little like each other.

You made me realize that Alternative rock is a silly name, it did sound cool the first time I heard it, but I think that the name should be changed or something..

Now you made me realize that my first realization was wrong... Alternative rock may be a silly name, but it may also be the only possible name for a genre as wide as alternative rock, it should stay the way it is..

no..... Grunge is not Indie, they are not the same genre of music.....

Nirvarna do not belong in the same genre as say the libertines... Nor does Alaniss Morissete sound like alice in chains... or the Sigur Ross sound like Mudhoney..

its just silly..

that's why there are subgenres, alternative rock is the house and subgenres are the rooms, their differences are the walls, without the walls, it would all be the same, grunge is too small to make its own house, that's why it was put under alternative rock..

There really should be some labeling, without the labeling, everything would be just vague, we need to be specific sometimes..

Honestly, I've got no problem with there being an "alternative rock". Though there are marked differences in the sounds, it's also true that people who listen to alternative music of whatever genre, are generally more open to these differences, and thus can like a bunch of different sounding bands. Alternative rock seems more like an approach to making music than a style necessarily.

But as far as names go it's up there with post-rock for just totally fucking meaningless.

Actually, I guess most sub-genre names get to that point. I mean shoegaze. Yuck. The name, not the music. We like the music.

To the actual matter of hand, I like lots of what Wikipedia tells me is alternative rock. Alice In Chains, Architecture In Helsinki, Modest Mouse, Blur, Dandy Warhols, The Breeders, Pixies, My Bloody Valentine, The Melvins & bollock loads of others.

My favorite music genre by far. It got post grunge, grunge, indie rock, synth rock, garage rock revival, post hardcore, pop punk, alternative metal, acoustic rock (although not exclusive to alt rock), and so much more.
