The Critics

Mixes the classic styles of guys like Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, and John Coltrane with contemporary sounds from the likes of the Big Phat Band to create something decidedly modern yet still so familiar. -Downbeat Magazine

Punchy, tight, and flawless. The band hits everything hard and drives through every note. You won't find anything without a purpose, every note, even in the solos, matters. -The New York Times

A bunch of rock stars get together and make a jazz record. Sounds like a recipe for disaster doesn't it? It is actually surprisingly fresh and fantastic. They bring a love of the genre as well as a penchant for rock star showmanship to create a unique and new take on jazz. -Rolling Stone

We haven't heard a jazz record like this in a while. -The Washington Post

This was just fantastic. A refreshing change from the metal scene, been able to let loose in a different direction and been able to work with different people.

(Luis form Green Leaf): Not to sound arrogant or anything but..I don’t see how the hell this got so many positive reviews. The fact that there are so many stars ”kills” the whole image of this. I just can’t help but think about the stars rather than the actual sound and message. I’ve had three listens and still haven’t managed to feel this CD. IT's a bit messy and overpowering at the same time. I do like some of the songs, just not what I expected. However I do acknowledge the effort.

Personally, I don't see this as having much crossover appeal for rock fans, but that's not really why I did it. It was fun to get to work on a serious project with a bunch of friends and friends of friends led by a guy I respect tremendously. This was especially good since my jazz side-project, Pharaohs, is taking a break for a bit after our next album and this let me blow off some jazz steam that had been building up. I just hope we get to do this again. In my opinion, it was one of the most invigorating experiences to finally drop the drama bullshit that everyone keeps focusing on and just work on music. It's not that I don't care about the lives of these people, it's just that music is really my life and I connect best to them through that method and not through the petty bickering that fills the cracks of our lives. And we got that!

Here's to hoping for a Volume II! One of the biggest fans and, golly gee, a member, too!

Brandon: this album is pretty good, i understand how some might view the line up and be a bit put off because of 'star power' but there is some serious talent here. i would LOVE to hear this album live. i cut my teeth on jazz guitar. when all the other kids were playing Nirvana and Soundgarden, i was locked up in my room picking out Bela Fleck tunes. so beautiful.

Thanks to everyone who supports this record. It was a lot of fun to get together and create such a fantastic work of art. Sales were higher than expected (I think some people did buy the album because of the stars) we can all take solace in knowing the music is solid. As far as more Jazz All-Stars I have an album title and a first track ready to go: the album is Round 2 and the lead track is Knockout. I cannot wait to get into the studio in a few months to start recording.

I know with myself it was a privilege to go back to the instrument I grew up on. Some people may see this as overpowering at times but if you honestly know how hard we worked on that album and worked well actually. I joined the group not knowing many people but we were able to grow as a group. I mean I consider them my second family.
