Lyrical Meaning

"The first track off the album, and I think it was like the second or third song I wrote for the record. After I had written it I knew I had a direction for the record. It sort-of brought together, very cohesively what I was trying to achieve with the idea of heartbreak and love, sort-of bringing that war-feel to a heartbreak. When you can't get through to somebody by loving them, the next choice is to get through to them hurting them and that is what A Never-Ending Trip to Heartbreak, is about. I don't recommend it. I'd recommend full-on global thermal nuclear war, before I'd recommend trying to make a lady jealous on purpose. It doesn't end well."

Music and structure

The song marked some changes from the music that Ryan Ross Hernandez was known for, which was the soft blues influence in his previous albums. Songs like this song from Dark Secret Love, along with "Love Is Really Nothing But a Dream" and "Fight On Until the Darkness Over Takes Us" went more towards Hernandez's more rock-oriented sound, which he showed more on Dark Secret Love.

Musically, the guitar riff and overall sound are very similar to the U2 song "Bad". Hernandez has admitted that while "A Never-Ending Trip to Heartbreak" may in fact resemble "Bad", he was not intentionally referencing it while composing his song.

Lyrical Meaning

Hernandez wrote this song after deleting numbers out of his cell phone that he knew he would more than likely never call again. He was doing so, in an airport, while waiting for his flight. While doing so, he was present to see US Army soldiers being shipped off to the War in Afghanistan. He was able to see their families saying their goodbye's. This experience provided the inspiration for the song.

This song sends an inspiring message that the things in your life are just a season. Even though times may be rough it is all part of life's cycle and as Ryan hints love, happiness, success, etc. may be just "around the bend." It's just about how life goes on, even if you don't notice it, if you just stop for a second and look around you'll see that the world keeps moving, that life goes on, that while you stop your life, others are living it. IT hurts to realize that because all you do is wonder how can everyone around seem so normal and keep on with their lives and their everyday activities while you're in so much pain and it seems like nothing will ever be the same - at least to you.

The song was written for his acting debut "Something's Missing,". It was released as a single on December 19th and is the first commercial single in Hernandez's career that was not originally released on one of his albums but is rumored to be included in his forthcoming album, Hollywood Hills Assassin.

Ryan Ross Hernandez, is known for having many banters with his audience at a show. Most banters are very dirty, about sex, women. Some not so raunchy banters are when he speaks out on the media, his fan base, current events, and one of his every so favorite topics, love. Hernandez can be as serious and soulful at a show just as easily as he can be playful and make many suggestive jokes about sex and his penis.

At live shows, for most songs, Hernandez adds a very bluesy/soulful guitar solos to his tracks that go on much longer than the studio versions giving it a unique sound live to each. Ryan's collection of over 200 guitars, that he brings out on the road with him call for him to change guitars between every song he performance. He can easily be playing a acoustic tune one second, to a rock tune another and finish a show off with a gospel outro that gets the whole crowd singing along.

Reckoner burst into the music scene back in December when they were signed to Suicide Records by Kieran Marks himself. With the release of their debut single Negative, they were launched into super stardom and received much positive reviews from critics all over the UK and the World. The band also released several singles namely, Comatose, Scream, and Oxygen all receiving positive reviews but not as much as Negative did. The band has also been acclaimed because of their awesome live performances where the crowd is always included, brainstorming solos, and much blood since the band are real rowdy boys when it comes to their instruments. Negative is the first official single released by British alternative rock quintet Reckoner on January 24 2009. The single was recorded in the Suicide Records Studios in London earlier this year along with other tracks for their upcoming untitled album. The music video for the song was released last January 20 and featured Jason Smith of Mind and the band members of Shadow Of My Former Self. The said video was banned in the US only 2 days after it was released.The band has also refused releasing the single in the US.

-Negative is a song about depression and living under pressure. It was written by Troy Mascenon when he was 13 after facing depression. He decided to write the song to just make him feel happy about himself."I wrote the song after locking myself in the room ,after a fight with my parents, for 8 hours not eating or drinking but just sitting around feeling depressed. I decided to write a poem in order to feel enlightened and just feel good. It just didn't feel right as a poem so I picked up my guitar and began writing the chords that make up the song. Carl actually liked the song but felt that it lacked something, he then began arpeggiating the chords while JC thought of using distortion to add a little spice to it, JPC and Tristan just followed it up, and that was how the song was written."

2.Negative Acoustic Version(Mascenon)
-This was the original acoustic version of the song and was recorded with Troy doing vocals, Carl and JC playing the acoustic guitar, JPC playing the acoustic bass, and Tristan playing the drums.

3.Brain Drain(Mascenon/Morrisson)
-This song was featured on the band's EP, Project:MK Ultra. It was written by Troy and Carl just 2 weeks before the releasing of the EP. It was about Carl's ex girlfriend who was able to manipulate him, or "brain drain" as he calls it, to doing stuff for her but left him for someone else in the end."Its a really personal song for me, about a girlfriend I had before the worst if I have to add, you wouldn't wanna know what she has done to me, but now I'm happy to say i'm free from her clutches and that's what this whole song is about" Carl says.
