ΔΤ BATTLE OF THE BANDS 4
The Final [16/4-19/4 : "The Last Battle"]

So, here is the final scoreboard for the competition, from the last time it matters ....
1. Blood Of Wecz
2. Reckoner
3. Mind

4. Ryan Ross Hernandez
.... which means that we will have to say goodbye to Ryan Ross Hernandez! Thankyou Ryan, you've been a fantastic contestant, and 4th is nothing to be ashamed of.

The other three will carry on. This is your last show in Delta Tau Battle Of The Bands 4, and it's your final chance to impress the general public - yes, no more written votes or scoreboards, this is a public phone vote ((OOC : poll)), when lines open, anyone can call in to vote.

There are no rules confining your last show, where it is or how long it is, or anything like that .... anything you're good at goes, as long as it counts as a musical performance. The only rule is - DO YOUR ABSOLUTE BEST! (But I think you know that.)

Also, if you want, as well as your gig, feel free to shamelessly plug it or whatever - and fans of the bands, feel free to show your support! (:

The schedule -
16/4 : "Grace" day, post your shows, no voting.
17/4 : First poll opens and runs until the end of the day.
18/4 : Third place is announced, first poll is removed, another one is opened with only the last two finalists. (No need to post a new show, this one counts for both. Well, you can if you want to, but we assume you'll be exhausted!)
19/4 : The winner of Delta Tau Battle Of The Bands is announced!

Get posting your shows, well done for getting this far, and good luck!
-Katie

((OOC : On a side note - polls IP-check, so in case you were planning to cheat yourself or someone else up, don't even try multi-accounting because it won't work. Not that I don't trust you or anything because I do, but just in case.))

In other words, it would be another "video performance".

OOC: So here it is...I hope it's a good read.

The Blood Of Wecz DTBOTB final video...from East End Park Stadium in the hometown of Blood Of Wecz, Dunfermline

The camera fades in from black to show what looks like a sports dressing room, it’s empty, the shot fades out, and then back in to the same room where there is a hustle and bustle of activity, as jeans are laid out on benches and guitars are hung up on wall racks which have been hastily screwed to walls...it fades out one more time, and when it fades back in, the room is empty save for the five members of Blood Of Wecz who sit dotted around the room...

They stand up, and move towards the middle of the room, as they get together in the traditional huddle, the camera zooms in on the face of Ryan Lee.

Ryan – This is it...we’ve worked so very hard to get here, and we got one more shot, just one chance to win it...lets not let down our fans...and lets do this for them, and us! BLOOD OF WECZ!!

As they high five and embrace, the camera fades out again to black, and a cheering noise can be heard over the darkness of the frame. When the camera fades back in from black, the scene is magnificent, 15,000 Blood Of Wecz fans are squeezed into the stadium, basking in the early spring evening. Many Scottish flags are dotted around the crowd who are in a real party mood.

The camera pans round and faces the stage, just as a roadie flashes a torch to signify that the show is about to begin...the stage lights and PA cut out, without warning, and a huge roar emanates from the baying crowd, they start chanting the band name ferociously.

The stage is pitch black as a piece of classical music plays loudly over the PA (Ennio Morricone's Rabbia E Tarrantella), the crowd singing along to the notes of the song. Then the music cuts out and one huge chord rings out, at the exact same time as the stage is illuminated by a darting array of green lasers, another chord plays and they all change to a bright blue, before a third chord and a little drumbeat turns them red and the lasers start flying all over the place, illuminating crowd and stage alike. After a minute they stop moving and sit completely still.

A screen at the back of the stage flickers slowly on...white at first but slowly fading into...

UserPostedImage

As the crowd cheer, the lasers die and are replaced by a huge, sudden flash and massive bang, leading to two massive towers of fire exploding from the front corners of the stage. As the crowd marvel in the wonders of the pyro, Santi Padora appears as if from nowhere behind the drum riser, saluting the audience and settling behind his kit. Mark Talley, Maxxi Starr and Ryan Lee walk on stage in unison, instruments strapped on, and Ryan walks to the front of the stage.

Ryan – It’s fucking epic to be home Dunfermline!...We are Blood of Wecz, and this is Repentance!

Ryan and mark trade little lead pieces before a quick drum solo, and then a huge booming bass note sends the centre of the stage erupting in flames again, when the pyro dies, halfway through the opening riff, Scott H is standing, as if he has emerged from the fire itself. He stands hands out to the sides before turning to face the cheers of adoration from the crowd. He growls through the explosive opener, diving around the stage as he does.

The band fly quickly through their second track, The Life After before Scott H addresses the crowd for the first time.

Scott – Shit, I’m having a fucking good time! You guys are fucking insane! So it’s amazing to be home!! Yeah, I love you too ma’am! Haha. We’re gonna play you one from our upcoming album, this is called MIAASSSSMMMMAAAA!

Santi Padora counts in four beats, and the churning riff from “MIASMA” blasts from all four corners of East End Park. As the drums pound like thunder, Scott Hood straddles a firework cannon at the side of the stage which is firing rockets repeatedly over the heads of the crowd. He thrusts his crotch forward as each one launches, which he seems to find hilarious, so much so that he almost misses the final chorus...

TAKE! A deep breath!

Suck it all up inside

PUTRID MANIFESTATION

A sickening stench of death!

MIASMA!

Scott – Fucking wow! Thank you guys...how fucking epic was that cannon? Wow huh? Yeah! Hey are we all in a party mood? YEAH! I wanna take a sec to give a shout out to the other bands in this competition. Let’s hear it for MIND....And RECKONER!! Yeah, and of course, everyone else who has made this competition what it is! Lets hear it for Dame Katie Kairiri as well...that cool cool fucking woman IS Delta Tau BOTB. She has made all of this possible...thanks dudes...let’s see you move to this one...

They play Genocidal Travesty an old song from them which is reminiscent of early Death work to the cheers of the old school Blood Of Wecz fans, before they rip into the superspeed Neverending Capitulation, a previously unheard song which has Mark Talley walking up onto the platform above the drum riser and playing his solo against a bright white backdrop, making him almost a silhouette.

Scott – Hey, I have an idea! My band are gonna fucking hate me for this...but they’re wearing wireless packs, and I’ve gotta surprise for them. You all know how I like to get in amongst you all during shows, well I think these guys need a little taste of that. If they crowdsurf while playing will you guys carefully pass them all the way to the back and then down here again? ALRIGHT! Look out for the pits Ryan! Haha...this one is called PUTRIFICATION IN THE BOOK OF REVELATION!!!

As Scott and Santi stand alone on the stage, the other three members of Blood Of Wecz tentatively make their way to the front, they are hoisted up and Scott counts in four beats, and the crowd start to pass them backwards, unsteadily at first, and then quite quickly. Ryan and Mark play the bends and taps flawlessly despite being almost upside down, and they each play a solo, whilst the crowd hoist them even higher, as Ryan’s solo draws to a close though, and Scott is ready to sing the last chorus, the crowd are moving him perilously close to the pit. Two huge red rockets fire off the stage in a cacophony of noise and shower the crowd in white sparks, giving some people a fright and they drop Ryan in the pit just as Scott starts singing,

Putrefied! hahaha

Liquefied lov...!oh my fucking god

Shit...you guys sing...

.............! Weeping eyes!

*growls*Revelations from your God!

As Scott steadies himself, Mark and Maxxi climb back onto the stage.

Scott – Sorry I just couldn’t not laugh at that. Is that dipshit okay?

Three guys in the audience pick up Ryan and just as the camera cuts to them they hoist him high. He looks slightly weary, but gives the thumbs up to the stage and the crowd cheer.

Scott – Hahaha, oh yeah! Excellent guys, bring him back, I love you Ry, you never stop making me laugh man!

As the crowd slowly surf Ryan back to the stage and he makes his way back up, Scott asks for the backdrop to be changed.

UserPostedImage

Scott- Well...we got one more left for you...sorry, but its true...so this is...shit, oh yeah, umm did anyone happen to catch some guy talking shit about us on TV last night? You know him? That’s fucking right! Alex P thinks he can threaten Blood Of Wecz? Are we gonna let him? Are we fuck!

You know I always thought of Alex as like a dude waiting for the last train...he waits and waits, but his brain has loooonng since departed. Anyway Alex, since you like us playing the old songs so much, this one’s for you, Deeply Disturbed!

The crowd cheer and the breakdown/intro chugs slowly at first, before a crescendo of cymbals sends a huge double fire ball bursting from the platform at each side of Scott H. The singer leaps into the air as they erupt and dives into the song, screaming and growling like a man possessed above the screeching guitars, and pounding beats.

As the band reach the middle section with the breakdown...Scott stands tall on his platform, high above the crowd...

Scott - You know this one, I fucking know you do...so move...1!2!3!FOUUUUURRR! As the technical guitar duel rips the eardrums, the crowd are in a frenzy of pitting below the band, who look on and smile. Scott growls the final chorus...

I am here with you

You don't know where I came from

You can’t see who I am

It all feels so fucking wrong

To yoooooooooooooooooooouuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!

You feel my breath on your shoulder

I see the fear in your eyes

Your blood runs ever colder

It's MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!

The band hand their instruments to their respective roadies and wave to the crowd at the front of the stage. Ryan and Scott each say a big good night on the microphone, and then the band leave the stage.
The stage descends into pure darkness, and the crowd chant for one more. The stage stays dark for two whole minutes, and the crowd refuse to leave...

...A voice speaks quietly in the darkness...

Ryan – Hey, can I get some lights out here?

The strobe lights burst on as a huge flash bang erupts, and the stage is a bright beaming white light. As the lights die, the stage has taken on a completely different look, Blood Of Wecz are hoisted up on some huge platforms above the stage (apart from Scott H, who has made his way to the top of the seating area)

UserPostedImage

The intro of the song is already playing, and the crowd surging in huge pits when Scott H shouts

Scott – PRIIIIICCCCEEE TO PAAAYYYY motherfuckers!

They absolutely nail the searing signature song, and the crowd are absolutely loving it, fans high five Scott as he moves around the seating area draped in a large Scotland flag, embracing women as he growls and screams, encouraging some people to sing down the mic. On stage the 4 remaining members are playing their hearts out on the huge towers they are hoisted up on, as light shows amaze the crowd above and below the band, some amazing visuals.

Just before the last chorus, Scott and the band stop.

Scott – Okay, so you know there’s still a little bit left, but I wanna talk to you about a close friend of Blood Of Wecz. Right now a good friend of ours is lying in a hospital bed somewhere, and he’s sick with leukaemia. That dude’s name is Jakey Comatose, and we just want Jakey to know that we dedicate our performance in this competition to him! Get well soon dude!

The crowd chant Jakey! Jakey! Jakey! And Scott waits for them, allowing them to chant the name for a few minutes. Then the band launch into the final minute of Price to Pay at a blistering pace.

another six huge fireballs erupt and the band burst into life again, for the final chorus...

Standing together in death!

Ripped apart in the fires of the afterlife

Will torn asunder they all wept

This is their ultimate Price To Pay

Gone forever, lost to your god

Your sins remembered and never repaid

Is the Price to Pay enough to see you

Never be alone again!

...IS IT ENOUGH....IS IT ENOUGH...IS IT ENOUGH...IS IT ENOUGH...IS...IT...E...NOUUUUGGGGGHHHHH!!!

Scott disappears into the back of the seating area and a huge shower of white falling stars litter the stage, the band wave to the crowd once more and bow. After a couple of minutes they are joined on stage by Scott, and they slowly depart. The camera fades to black.

Reckoner Live at Teignmouth, Devon

Teignmouth is home to Reckoner, one of the greatest new bands in present time. Many of the band’s early achievements have been witnessed by their hometown; this is where they met each other, where they played their first gigs, had their first taste of music release, and where they even lost their virginity… to music. After receiving a phone call from Katie Kairiri, the organizer of the Delta Tau Battle of the Bands, telling them that they can choose whatever venue they would want to play for the finals, Reckoner wasted no time and quickly packed their bags, checked out of the Dirty Bastard, and went straight home to prepare for the greatest battle of their lives. They reached Teignmouth at exactly noon but instead of going straight to their own houses, they had to talk to the mayor first about having the gig. The mayor gladly permitted Reckoner to play the gig at The Den and even offered to set up the stage for free, they were given 5 hours before show time. The band had enough time to take a rest and calm their selves before the show so they all went home for lunch. After an hour, the band met up with each other at JC’s house to discuss what songs to play and practice them..

JC: Man, I miss this place so much! It’s been, like, ages since I last slept here!

Troy: Yeah, it sure does feel good to finally come home...

JC: Yeah, now back to business, what songs should we play?

JPC: Why don’t we play our new songs?

Tristan: I agree with JPC, play the new songs to give the fans the something well, new!

Troy: Well you guys have a point, playing the same songs over and over might seem pretty boring, who votes on playing new material?

All five members of the band raise their hands, agreeing on playing the new material for the free concert. They plugged in their instruments and had a simple soundcheck before practicing the new songs.

10 minutes before the gig…

Reckoner arrive backstage with their tour bus, immediately handing out their instruments to the stage crew, who only needed the band’s instruments to complete the stage. Now it has finally come, the show has just started and the spotlights roam around the venue as excited fans cheer energetically for their hometown heroes. Reckoner gently walk out of the backstage and into the view of the audience, they are met with a great applause as they go into their respective positions. All instruments have been tuned by the band and plugged in by the stage crew so they didn’t have to worry anymore about tuning onr plugging their instruments, they just needed to play..

Troy: Good evening Teignmouth! (Audience cheers loudly)

Carl: It’s good to be home!

Troy: Well today is gonna be the epic finale of one of the greatest battles in the history of music. Today is the finals of the Delta Tau Battle of the Bands and we are going up against two of the greatest metal bands ever; the legendary Blood of Wecz, and the future legends Mind! If ever you are going up against two great live acts, you really have to put up a damn good show, am I right? (Audience cheers even more loudly) So please give it up for my band, and Teignmouth’s own, Reckoner!

The audience cheer once more time as Troy is handed out his acoustic Martin guitar. The spotlight focuses on Troy and Troy only. Troy plays this chord progression which seemed so similar to the fans that they even applauded. The song was Slow Down without any other musical accompaniment but the guitar. The acoustic version is more intimate and emotional than the original because while Troy sings the chorus, everybody in the crowd is given a chance to sing along. One of the most beautiful things a musician can witness is when fans sing along to his music, it’s just like seeing your baby say his first word. Troy was nearly crying and had to let the people sing the chorus, he got so emotional with the song but he still had to play it to the end. The audience applauded as Troy gave his Martin guitar to the crew member, who in exchange gave him his famous Telecaster.

Troy: That was good everybody, you nearly made me cry! (Audience laughs) So this next song, you might have heard from our Blur EP, it’s a psychedelic trip to some weird shitty wonderland, its called Daydream!

Daydream is a psychedelic song with dominant whammy pedals and JPC’s first song playing the slap bass technique. The song starts of with JC who plays the lead whammy, and Troy who plays a few notes on clean guitar. The whole band then comes in with Carl’s slightly distorted guitar, JPC’s slap bass, and Tristan’s snare and hi-hat combo. The green and yellow lights complement the psychedelic feel of the song. The song, as Troy explained is a psychedelic trip to wonderland with meaningless lyrics, groovy beats, and Carl\s crazy back up vocals which use this ghostly effect. The chorus is consisted of a different chord progression for Carl and even more complicated riffs from JC, the crowd seemed to like the song pretty much as they tried to sing along the catchy hook. After another verse and another chorus, the solo then comes in. The solo is played by JC’s whammy guitar as Carl plays the intro chord progression and Troy just played with his guitar’s delay. The song ends with another whammy riff by JC followed by a loud applause from the audience.

Troy: Thank you, glad you liked that song!

Troy grabs his water bottle from the amplifier standing next to him and drinks from it, rehydrating his voice for the next song..

Troy: This next song is inspired by a band called Mind, JC and I wrote it right after the Chromosome 13 Tour and I guess you guys would like it; it’s called Lock N Load...

The song’s intro is consisted continuous strumming of distorted power chords by Carl and Troy followed by JC’s tremolo picking and Tristan’s hi-hat, metronome like sound. The song then explodes with JC’s metal riff, Troy and Carl playing the power chords, JPC playing an extremely complex bassline, and Tristan playing heavily on his drums to the point where it looks like he wants to destroy his own drums. The flickering lights accompany the sound of the riff giving that metal feel to the song. The song’s lyrics are very brutal and talk about man’s abuse of guns and their addiction to violence, the lyrics are quite abstract though, but if thoroughly understood, you can see the sad message inside. The audience banged their heads to the riff, since almost everybody in the place listened to Mind, Blood of Wecz, and Black Gold Reign. The chorus is made up of a crescendo of instruments with Troy’s voice imitating the progression; the chorus ends with Troy singing in a high C5 note scream followed by the intro riff again. The song’s solo is consisted of Troy playing rhythm, JC playing the whammy and Carl playing the distorted guitar; these different riffs, when put together, form one new sounding riff which the fans moshed to. The song then slows down to the outro where Troy and JC’s distorted guitar have a duet, Troy sings the last few lines of the song, imitating the sound of the bluesy riff JC was currently playing.

Troy: Thank you Teignmouth, you have been a very great audience! We would like to thank all of you who have supported the band throughout the whole competition. We hope to win this battle but I see really tough competition. Well good luck to Mind and Blood of Wecz, both really great live acts, I just want to say thank you for giving us a great challenge and we are glad to lose to you guys cause I know you deserve it! Well this next and final song is also found from our Blur EP. This is dedicated to all my friends who have stabbed me from behind when I wasn’t even aware, it’s called Backstabber...

The song, as Troy described it, is about people who he though were friends but then betrayed him at the moment he needed them the most. The intro of the song is consisted of a distorted guitar progression played by all 3 guitarists, another slapped bassline by JPC which he would be playing for the whole song, and Tristan’s complex drumming. The verse is sung by Troy with only the bass and drums as accompaniment giving that groovy feel to the song. The chorus is played with the intro’s chord progression, only this time with lyrics and Carl's high pitched back up vocals. The second verse is played with the same arrangement of the first one but with muted guitar strums played by JC and Carl, it is followed by JC’s fill which leads to the chorus one more time. The chorus is followed by a bridge consisted of semi-spoken lyrics by Troy and the bass and drum combo by JPC and Tristan, it is followed by aggressively strummed chords leading to a solo played by JC and accompanied by Carl and Troy's famous "wall of noise". The song then leads to one final bridge and the chorus to end it all with Troy and Carl sharing vocal duties and JC playing randomly picked notes. The song ends to the loud applause of the crowd and as the band put down their instruments they all dive off the stage and into the arms of the audience who warmly accept them as they chant their name.. RECKONER! RECKONER!

"It doesn't matter if we win or we lose, the most important thing we have done throughout the competition is give it all we got to the people, we know that we have made all of them happy and I think that's enough to say we are winners.."

(OOC: Quite a big transition in style here... let’s see if it works. Not happy with it, but it’ll do for now.)
“I’m worried now...” Spouted Jason, hair tied back and with his thick, black rimmed glasses resting lazily at the top of his nose. Tension mounted in the air as they awaited their fate. Would they get through to the final of the Battle of the Bands? Or would they just fall short? “We have to wait, I suppose. We’ve made it this far, let’s not go yet.” Aaron stuttered, visibly sweating in the heat of Phoenix. As well as being a part of the battle of the bands, they were touring with Black Gold Reign in the Americas, spanning from the cold of Canada to humid atmospheres, such as Phoenix. Today was more than just another notch in the tour book though... it would mark a pivotal point in the career of Mind. It could make them superstars, or propel them straight back into obscurity, such as it was 2 years ago. Of course, just simply losing wasn’t going to be their downfall, it would be the spirit lost in the process.

Then Jason’s mobile rang. As the sounds of “Price to Pay” by Blood of Wecz rang throughout the bleakness of Arizona for a split second, Jason quickly flipped it open. “H-hello there?” he spoke nervously. “You’re through. Congrats!” said the voice from the other end, their manager. Jason fist pumped to signal they had got through before more came from the other end. “It’s with Blood of Wecz and Reckoner. Ryan Ross Hernandez got knocked out.” “Okay. When do we have to perform?” Jason asked. “Uhhh... wait a sec... you have to record a video... it’s in for today. That’s not good. We’re going to have to record your performance today.” The manager said, partially angry and partially fed up. Jason was not happy at this. He didn’t perform well under pressure and he never liked recording anyway. “Fucks sake man... can you tell us earlier next time?” he said with rage being loudly contained in his eyes. “I didn’t get the info until now... anyway, I have to go, see you soon.” The manager said anxiously, and quickly put the phone down.

“Okay, the good news or the bad news first?” Jason said. To this, Aaron replied “Get the bad shit out of the way first, and then we can celebrate afterwards.” “We’re recording today’s performance.” Jason explained with venom. “Fuck... what’s the good news?” Robert spat, now also angry. “Well... we got through!”

The band made their way throughout backstage into the dressing room. Even though their usual stage shows were spectacular, they had to do something REALLY special tonight, since their competition is two of the toughest bands to beat in the world. Even though both bands were friends and dear to the band, they were looking for victory. If not for the glory, for their bandmate Harry, who, as you probably know by now, has been imprisoned for drug crimes, even though he didn’t commit them. They’d barely got past the last round, but could they go on and win it? If so, it would be a true underdog story. Judging on the positions thus far, the other bands were heavily favoured and it would take something huge to get back on top...

“May I remind you lot that we’re on in a couple of hours. We better think of some big, fancy shit quick, otherwise we’ve got no chance of winning this. Lasers? Good idea. Get a couple of clowns dressed as robots in there too. More sci-fi. MORE FUCKING SCI-FI NOW BITCHES!!” It was out of character for Jason to boss around quite like this. Of course, he was usually bossy anyway, but this was something else. The pressure was extremely high and the tension could have been cut with the very sci-fi electric knife Jason wished to possess. The Voyd had just finished their set, and it was time for Black Gold Reign to go first tonight, since this would allow the band more time to set up the stage show. The visuals were going to be huge tonight.

Black Gold Reign had just come of the stage to a roaring applause. As David was walking past to take a break, Jason pulled him by his shirt and said “Where do you think you’re going? We have work to do, mate.” Seeing that David looked a bit pissed off now, Jason said “Dude, we’ll save the partying ‘til later. Come on.” As Jason explained the plans to David, Aaron went outside for a smoke. Although Robert didn’t smoke, he tagged alongside him as well. “This is it, my friend. What we’ve been working towards the last few months. The big, grand finale...” Aaron whispered, tears in his wide open eyes, mouth trembling. “Yep.” Robert replied bluntly. For the few minutes they were out there was an awkward tension of silence.

“Okay dudes, man your battle stations. We’re on in a sec.” Jason said, untying his hair and fluffing it up. The rest of the band were grabbing their weapons (also known as instruments) and practicing for a few seconds. “Alright... ready?” Jason asked afterwards, provoking a huge cheer from the band and staff alike, including the robot clowns, who Jason still couldn’t find a use for. Then something ingenious sparked in Aarons usually empty head. “Why don’t we perform The Juggernaut as a whole live set?” Jason looked stunned. Whether it was the fact that Aaron had a good idea, or whether he questioned it, no one knew, until he said “Wow. That’s an amazing idea. Everyone alright with that? Good. Let’s go!!”

Like most of their performances, the stage is pitch black when they reach it. However, a fan at the front sees Jason’s insufferable amount of hair and starts screaming, triggering a roar from the crowd. They know something special is on the way, when the band abandons their usual intro songs for The Juggernaut, the albums intro song. There is hushed singing in it, but very little, which allows time for Jason to shout “How the fuck are you?! We have a treat for you tonight...” The venue lights up a bit, allowing the fans to see the band and the visuals on the screen. The visual itself is the same from the end of the Birdies, a spaceship sailing towards a black sun. However, unlike the Birdies, at the end of the song, a huge eruption comes from the speakers as the ship plunges straight into the sun. They then proceed to squeal into the first proper song off of the album, the chaotic Scattered Hate. This is a true death metal song, combining ferocious guitars with harsh singing and chaotic lyrics. Did I mention it was chaotic?

After the fast-paced screaming of the last song, it went straight into the doom-laden The Good Apollyon, with a crushingly heavy bassline. The clown robots slowly started to make their way from backstage, although not actively doing anything, apart from one, playing the violin to mark the end of the 7 minute song. By now, the atmosphere in the venue is huge. The fans are lapping it all up, cheering like mad. The melancholy song finishes in a stylish fashion, until going into to metallic anthem, Divine Usurper, Minds biggest hit. With heavy, groovy guitars and pounding drums, the song is even better live, with the fans cheering and shouting along to the song. The sci-fi thing goes a bit out of hand, when one of the lasers accidentally swings round and knocks a clown over, although nobody cares about the clowns. Even the synthesizers are heavy as fuck.

It goes from one single to another, as the ripping, yet melodic riff of Lyophilisation (The Words and the Worlds) comes into play. It is a fan-favourite, marked when one particularly over zealous fan tries to climb on stage and shake Jason’s hand, although he is swiftly taken away by security. The emotional, operatic chorus is completely sung by the fans, whilst Jason moves away from the mic and plays his guitar, smiling. Whilst Aaron concentrates on the intricate solo, Jason takes time to say “We want to thank everyone for coming... this is for Delta Tau! Don’t forget to raise your horns for Reckoner and Blood of Wecz!” The song finishes to a great reception from the audience and numerous horns by the command of Jason. They then, without warning, go straight into the next track, yet another single, Amber is the New Red. It’s one of their more political and punky numbers, with numerous mosh pits emerging from certain spots in the place. Jason’s guitar is not needed for this, so him and his hair go absolutely mental during it.

After that, a small non-album interlude takes place, sci-fi sound effects, including explosions and lasers. Except with actual lasers, since they had them. The reason for this interlude is so that Jason could equip himself with an acoustic guitar for the next song, the prog metal epic My Fall from Grace. It was a huge number, the acoustic intro with quiet singing and hushed choruses, into a massive metallic song about 5 minutes into it with one huge scream. The lights flew into action on that note and so did the fans. A fan near the front was almost paralyzed; his eyes wide open and mouth drooping.

The whole song lasted for a good 9 minutes, displaying various emotions and styles of music. In one song! Anyway, after that, a drone noise came from the speakers, accompanied with a short film of an epic space battle on the screen. The next song is a full on, blistering death/ speed combination, reminiscent of classic death metal bands, with indecipherable, fast lyrics done in a pitch so high it was almost supersonic. Compared to the last song, it was quite a contrast, and the whole place was screaming and circle pit-ing. A huge wall of death was beginning as well, to make sure no-one goes home without a bruise or two. Then another interlude, similar, yet more dark than the last appeared for half a minute, which allowed time for Mind to go into their more folky song, The Trail of the Wanderer. Unlike most of the songs, there were no blistering time changes or instrument wankery. Instead, it was a nice simple slab of folk rock, with slightly heavier influences. Aaron was also doing the backing singing on this song.

Then the lighting turned crimson red... machine gun noises came from the speakers, whilst flames came from the stage. The backdrop had turned to words written in blood. These words were Platinum Hearse, which could only mean one thing; Anthema I: Platinum Hearse. A spectacle this big had never been seen in Minds stage shows before and it was received very well by the crowd. It was an epic doom song, in the vein of Candlemass, with alt. rock influences in it, making it sound like a darker version of Tool. There was Gregorian chanting and mini solos throughout the surprising 4 minutes it was executed in. After the song had finished, it went into the second part of the suite, Anthema II: Serenade. The lighting had changed from dark red to dark blue by now and the background just showed the Mind logo. The song was more melodic death metal than anything, combining fast riffs and screaming with clean and melodic, catchy choruses for the entire crowd to sing along to, whilst they mosh their lives away.

So it was the final song of the evening... a ballad, acoustic song. Anthema III: Into Ashes. It was sung along by the crowd again, almost being louder than the band themselves. Robert was allowed a break here, since there are no drums in it. The violin playing clown was back for the weeping sound that accompanied the sorrowful riff quite nicely. There was a little, tiny jam solo at the end, although it didn’t last for very long and the band were all smiling towards the end. “We love you. We couldn’t ask for a better crowd. And...” That was all Jason said, before he bit his top lip and tears started to form in his eyes. “And this has been the best journey we’ve ever been on. Thank you, so so much.” They then walked off of the stage into cheering staff members. Among the cheers were sighs of relief from the band and the manager. That was all there was to it. No more performances after tonight... but then they heard screaming from outside. They wanted an encore.

“Our job isn’t finished yet guys... come on.” Jason laughed, before running back on stage, his hands in the air. The other members followed suite until they were all prepared. With no warning, they went into their breakthrough hit, Cascade of Blood. The industrial riff and heavy, crushing rhythm in it made it a fan favourite and the critics’ choice. The vocals were deeper than Minds usual stuff, reaching gruff growls in the verses. But then the solo comes in, engulfing the entire world around it. In the words of Smash Reviews, “The song does a brilliant job of taking you from industrial to almost proggy solo, which is brilliant and the best part of the song. The song at no point feels like its split in two, and the breakdown in between the two merges them together brilliantly in a moment that makes you feel like the solar system is being sucked in around you.”

After that moment of band nostalgia, they went into another old song, and a big single for them, Blasphemy!. It’s an unusual song, and it marks the starting point of Minds experimentation in songs. Its crunching riff smashes about for a while, before a small, folky break in which a flute plays in the background. It then proceeds with a terrifyingly massive solo and again with the riff. A personal favourite of the band.

“Okay dudes and dudettes, we really have to go now. We hope to come back soon. We love you guys!” Aaron claimed before they rushed off stage and screamed in delight that it was all finally over. The pressure was off, now they just had to wait. There were no words, just heavy breathing and cheering from the band. An emotional journey which took them places they never thought they’d go, at one point to the top, and on a musical experience that has to be respected by any fan of music anywhere. It was over.
