I held Timo in my arms, rocking him. "Please be OK," I muttered, "please be OK." I was panicking that he wouldn't be, but at the same time, had a shred of hope in my mind. I petted his forehead, the poor burn tissue - being careful not to touch too closely. My nails were long, and I didn't want to scratch him. Why was it not a big surprise when Bri returned with an overdosed Jimmy? "GET HIS STOMACH PUMPED!" I shouted. "HE MUST SURVIVE!" I held up Timo. "This here is his kid, see, his mother died, and he's not going to be orphaned! He's NOT!" Bri petted my hair. "Calm down, love, they're doctors, they know what they're doing." I finally snapped - if I hadn't already - when I heard some whispers between the doctors about what an unsuitable father they think that Jimmy is, and that should Timo survive, he should be taken away. I stood up, even though it hurt and I was still wobbly on my legs. "Now listen here you," I said, pointing one perfectly polished finger at a doctor. "If Jimmy didn't care, he wouldn't have done this. If your child was in pain like this, if someone told you that your daughter had died and your son wouldn't live through the night, would YOU be happy? Would YOU have a good reaction? No, you wouldn't! When Bikki, his wife, was alive ...." I falter a little as I mention Bikki. During my pause, Bri gets me to sit down. "When Bikki was alive, she stopped him doing drugs. And he was an excellent father. And he still is. You don't even know him .... I do." I start to pet Timo's head again, this time with my nails, not thinking. "Jimmy can look after Timo just fine, so don't you DARE stick your noses in!" "Ouch, Uncle Joshy, that HURTS!" Everyone is silent, staring at Timo. I was right. He's seriously injured, but he's going to live!
I put him back to bed, next to Jimmy, hoping that when (not if, when) Jimmy wakes up, seeing Timo will help him feel better, and recover faster. Love has power. Bri and I stay the night, I don't want to leave them and she doesn't want to leave me. I look forward to seeing Jimmy awake. Bri isn't so sure, she thinks that I need to be a bit more realistic and prepared for disaster, but I have faith in Jimmy. He's survived drugs before, he can do it again. |
