So what are you metalists opinions on John Hiaat and Johnny Cash's American Recordings Series of records? I'm curious as the press says that young people still enjoyed Cash's last albums and many punks enjoyed Hiatts latest record too. So, since thats what you are...lol...figured I would ask.

I like the last 6 Cash records, but they aren't as interesting as his earlier recordings imo, something like Live At San Quentin is probably the peak of Cash's career.

The American recordings have some awesome songs on them, and though this is not of American per se, it is fucking amazing:
RP bands:
Insolent Paradox - Progressive [Forum Thread] - Post-production
Oceans - Fusion Jazz - Writing

Cash was great, but Nelson and Jennings are much better in my opinion. The American discs were good, but his old stuff and what he did with The Highwaymen is better.

Prefer Hank Williams Sr as far as country singers go.

I haven't listened to a ton of Cash and I have only a vague idea of who John Hiatt is, but I like Johnny (Cash's) covers of NIN's "Hurt" and Soundgarden's "Rusty Cage" even more than the originals.

Hurt bores me to tears, and apparently it's become some sort of anthem for 15 year old Dutch emo kids. Ugh.

I love the emotion that he put into that song. He had a way of taking songs that other artists wrote and making them uniquely his own. In the case of "Hurt" it strikes me that he's lamenting the mistakes that he's made in his lifetime as he looks back at his life during his advanced years when he was seventy-something years old. It seems authentic to me and I find that touching and heart-breaking. That song wouldn't mean nearly as much to me if it were being covered by Paramore or someone of that ilk, whom I do enjoy but it wouldn't have the same emotional resonance.

Its about his life, and the video conveys his feelings towards the end about what he had done to his freinds and family.

Actually it's about Trent Reznor's struggle with drug addiction.

Cash's Hurt cover doesn't do much for me. I mean, I get the idea, but I've heard more heartbreaking songs.

Especially this:

RIP Vic.

I think he knows that, however he's covering and making his own. Technically it's not about that anymore. the video sort of helps with that. I'm pretty sure you already know that and you are just trying to be sarcastic lol a hole. Also, how he killed Nine Inch Nails big time on their own song it's what is interesting to me. That's talent.

@Gildermershina that song is sad but it doesn't top Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt in my opinion. What is weird though is the songs flow reminds me of the song "Hunter" that I wrote which freaks me out a bit.

The song is exactly the same lyrically except for one instance where Cash changes the term "Crown of shit" into "crown of thorns", so yeah, I mean it is a song about Trent's heroin problems. Sure, Cash makes it his own and even Reznor agrees that Johnny's version is better than the original but that doesn't change the meaning behind what the song is about.

It's the video that makes the song all the more poignant, featuring the soon to be dead Mr & Mrs Cash both looking old, vulnerable and just a bit sad. The video is excellent at conveying that whole emotion, to the point that I'd say that it rather leads to the song being a bit over-rated by this point, as much as I do like it.

Just because one person wrote a song doesnt make that the only meaning. Songs are universal and the good ones should me made to adapt so that everyone can relate to it in someway or another. Johnnys version had a different meaning. He just used the same words to describe it.

It's interesting to see how far Johnny Cash went. I wish he would of changed earlier in his life because that change influenced a lot of his recent good music.

He didnt want to be making the kind of music he was making before the American series. His record label Columbia, and later Mercury made him do all sorts of that campy country red neck crap and so he started purposely making crappy music until they released him from his contract. He was going to retire and then Rick Rubin from American Recording Company gave him life again.

Lets just read those two sentences over and over again.

OK, Cash's version of Hurt is a cover. End of.
