DO 'NICE GIRLS' ALWAYS FINISH LAST !?Moronic Changeling's Kaethe Jenkins bitches bitchy musicians. Basically, if you haven't heard of Moronic Changeling, have you been locked up in a dungeon with noise-cancelling earphones on for the past five years!? This band, in particular the 'original three' of Kaethe Grietje Jenkins (née van Mouschi), Somerset Annelise 'Summie' Bissell and Nickola 'Nick' Biggs, have revolutionised music in their own way. They invented the genre 'madcore', which is something for everyone - neither mainstream nor alternative, this band has switched seamlessly between the two. Now, they can claim the title of longest-running currently active band. Known for their crazy amount of line-up changes, they've kept to their word - "Moronic Changeling will never split up".
Kaethe Jenkins, lead singer and former guitarist of Moronic Changeling (she was also the lead of the late, great K.I.C.K.A.R.S.E. for some time), now speaks to us. Jenkins is best known for her epic vocal range, complete inability to play guitar, and love of mashed potato. We ask her a bunch of random questions ....
So, how does it feel to have come so far? It's so strange that we been around so long ja? I mean, it seems not so long ago that I started out, I was just new to Britain, and about all I could say was, "My name Kaethe and I like mashed potato." Now here I am! :D
How exactly did you start out? Well Summie and Nick were best friends, they played music, they saw me singing pop songs in a café - it was like I was in a shop, Nick said to Summie, "I'll take that one, yarr me mateys" or however she speaks. It took a long time for me and Nick to get along, I never would have been friends with a girl like her normally. And then, we woke up one morning, saw this ad in the newspaper for 'Kirsty Cruz Management - looking for musicians', and we turned up at their door and played some music. Kirsty, probably pitying us, signed us. And so, Moronic Changeling, KCM/RvM/CBM/DBM and madcore was born!
Your biggest chart hit was the album 'lovefearhatetears', which got to #1 in every chart worldwide - a rare and brilliant feat indeed, few artists have done this. When you get back to work, do you expect to see this kind of success again? It would be good - but I doubt it, that was so rare and a surprise. I don't mind whether our music charts high or low, we're still doing well in my eyes. I mean, K.I.C.K.A.R.S.E. were never big sellers, nowhere near as successful as Moronic Changeling, but we gained a following of fans which we were close to, and I liked that.
Do you miss the rest of K.I.C.K.A.R.S.E.? Yes. They were the most amazing group of people. They may not have been the best musicians or the smartest or the richest or the sanest, but they were wonderful. Kaeli, especially - it may have been a long time ago, but it still hurts the same that she's gone.
Are you still doing all the anti-drugs projects? I never stopped. I do some work in London with Bedlam's rehab system, it's not good enough, and do some work with patients. It's surprising how many people heard about Kaeli and used to think, 'that'll never happen to me', and then they're in hospital having barely escaped with their lives after an overdose. People need to learn that it could happen to them, the only way to avoid it is to keep clean!
On 'keeping clean' - what are your thoughts on the 'dirty bitch' culture that's so popular now? I'm not going to be hypocritical, I've done my share of whoring out - it's not hard to find pics of me with little to no clothing, and quotes of me shooting my mouth off. I did an interview on The Mike Williams Experience which didn't air because I was such a bitch, and the Kaethe/Jimmy porn video is out there somewhere. (Jakey Comatose and I haven't spoken much since, but then, he was dating Natalya Banhart, so it was double infidelity. Oh, and Jimmy forgot to mention that he was still with Kasia before I fell on his dick. The music industry is like a fucking great orgy.) Anyway, back to my point. As I know from experience, shouting out swear words, insulting other artists and getting naked is not going to improve your music. If anything, being a slut was a problem for Moronic Changeling, because people thought of us as 'that band with the lead singer with the sex tape' - we lost a lot of credibility. That wasn't so bad for K.I.C.K.A.R.S.E., Catriona had a few sex tapes out there (most notably with Syke) and we were known for doing crazy shit, but it wasn't good for Moronic Changeling. It was stupid. As for the bitches - as has been said, we don't need an army of Kamikaze Kates. One is more than enough. Nice girls finish last, and that's why Moronic Changeling are still going! (:
Who was better, Jimmy or Jakey? WTF kind of question is that? And - well, how obvious is the answer!? ;)
You say you have a lot of experience .... how old are you, really? Don't you know that you should never ask a lady her age? ;P I was born on 2nd November 1969, work it out, ja?The, erm, *lovely* Kaethe a few years ago, looking as crazy as ever! Now, you're a musician, on to the music side of things. What's next for the Moronics in terms of music? It's a secret. No really, it is. Nick's rented a military bunker to hide all the stuff for our 12th album. (No kidding, but hell, you can believe it of Nick!)
OK - so finally, do you think this interview will cause any drama? My name Kaethe and I like mashed potato. |
