I've found that the minors are easy, often they're just a fret down on one finger, usually the last.

How well do you know your scales man? Once you get them, it'll all click into place. The difference between a minor and major scale is that the 3rd note in the scale is flattened in a minor scale (hence moving down one fret on that note). Apologies if you knew all that and I sound like a dick :)

I know about scales, but I haven't bothered with them yet. All the modes scare me. I used to know pentatonic on the bass.

Too... much... theory...

If you know the notes in normal tuning, and you know the A minor and A major scale you can basically figure out the rest. That's how I learned scales, never bothered to learn chords. The only scale I bothered actually looking up is the harmonic minor, which I hardly use (only if I feel like outplaying Yngwie).

Modes are worrying, but simple once you get the gist of this. The prospect of learning them is daunting, and relatively unnecessary when you have the ability to just play around and mix by ear anyhow.

I guess me and my many modes of music geekiness will just have to sit here all by ourselves... at least we have each other :p

Yes, all this theory is all well and good, but my technique is sloppy, and I have almost no ear for melody whatsoever. That remains my major stumbling block.

Ha! You're probably twenty times better than I'll ever be, so never mind me, hehe.

If you practice enough you'll get there. Just start off with learning the A minor pentatonic scale, that'll help a lot.

As of today I am learning Spanish. Already (pretty much) fluent in Deutsch, so I thought I'd learn another as well.

What is the point in doing that? The little *? If it's so offensive don't say it at all, no point trying to cover up what you mean because the meaning is still conveyed to us, thus I am still offended.

Sorry, pet hate.

OMG, how did you know?! Psychic...
We went out yesterday and drank a couple of beers each. His mother found out and now he can't get out of the house for fuck knows how long.
And I'm sure she now thinks I'm trying to take her son to the dark side.
