If you know the notes in normal tuning, and you know the A minor and A major scale you can basically figure out the rest. That's how I learned scales, never bothered to learn chords. The only scale I bothered actually looking up is the harmonic minor, which I hardly use (only if I feel like outplaying Yngwie).

The prospect of learning them is daunting, and relatively unnecessary when you have the ability to just play around and mix by ear anyhow.

That remains my major stumbling block.

You're probably twenty times better than I'll ever be, so never mind me, hehe. If you practice enough you'll get there. Just start off with learning the A minor pentatonic scale, that'll help a lot.
