Trevor Nelson Interview With MattY on BBC Radio 1xtra Breakfast show:The song fades into the background
Trevor: And that was the late MC Yung Deez, with his second and penultimate single “My Nigga C-Triga”. Now all of you rap fans out there, we have a proper treat for you today! In the studio today we have new rapper MattY. Welcome to the studio man.
MattY: Hey, hey, hey, hey. What’s up Trev? How you doing man?
Trevor: I am good thanks, and you?
MattY: Yes mate, I am wicked today! I have been proper looking forward to this.
Trevor: Wow, it is great to have you on the show. To all of you guys that have never heard of MattY, he is 16 years old…
MattY: Nah mate, 15. 16 in a couple weeks.
Trevor: Oh sorry, *laughs*, he is a rapper/grime artist who is based in Derby.
MattY: Yeah, that’s right. I was born in East London but after my Dad died and my bitch of a Mum got put inside I went to my Mums Grandparents up in Derby, ‘cause my Grandparents wanted nothing to do with me.
Trevor: Yeah, that sucks man.
MattY: Not really, ‘cause moving to Derby was the best thing that happened to me. Moving into a safer environment is always a good thing. I mean, my Gramps – my great-granddad – is relatively well off, so moving to where I live has given me somewhere where I always have food on the table and I’ve always had most of the stuff I’ve wanted.
Trevor: Fair enough. So yeah, you’re based in Derby and you have just released your first single – High and Dry. I have to say I do like this song man, I like the lyrics. You don’t quite get the message it is trying to put through to you, if you’re listening through the radio though, ‘cause the song is constantly interrupted by bleeped sections.
MattY: Ah, shit, never mind.
Trevor: So MattY, what is the song about? You gonna give us a brief explanation of your track?
MattY: Alright then. Well basically, my track is about those times when you are completely off your face yeah, and you don’t even know what’s happening anymore, it’s basically about that and how you wake up in the morning and your head hurts so much – I mean serious pain like when someone’s givin’ you head and she bites your nob – that sort of pain – and yeah stuff like that.
Trevor: Erm… Right then… Well it was great to have you on the show MattY, hope to see you again. Would you like to introduce your track to the listeners?
MattY: Alright, well hope you’re all listening yeah, because this is my track High and Dry – which will not be on my debut album, which should be out later this year. Enjoy yeah.
