Moronic.

American Idiot has already sold 5,500,000 copies in America alone, it's a multiple platinum selling album and their second biggest selling record, after Dookie which has gone Diamond (10,000,000 sale plus). You can hate American Idiot if that's what you want to do but fuck off is it an album that turned people against Green Day with sales figures like that.

I like green day from American Idiot and before, but their new album, it's good, but it doesn't sound like them.

Totally agree with you there.
American Idiot is one of the best albums released in a long time, It was the first proper album I ever bought and I hadn't heard of Green Day before American Idiot, mainly because I was kinda young and never paid too much attention to music. But like I say American Idiot is one of the best albums over the last 20 (maybe even 30) years.
On 21st Century Breakdown, I counted down the days for it and I was really looking forward to it. It was a long time coming and it was a solid album, I think it was the right move for Green Day because to me personally it has a much more diverse mix of music in it but it was never gonna compete with American Idiot.

I used to be a massive Green Day fan, loved everything they did. American Idiot however, wasn't for me. It's a good album and that, but for some reason I can't really get that into it. I di like the new album though, it sounds a lot fresher than AI did.

Yeah that I can understand, obviously American Idiot is not for everyone and thats fair enough but at least you gave it a chance.

So, you're saying that with that explanation that Britney Spears and Lady Gaga are some of the greatest artists of all time?

I could understand that if you meant by the fact that it wasn't as good as the predecessors, I can agree with that slightly, but you're explanation says that sales is what makes music good, which is a very false statement.

Whilst it may not be everyone's taste in music...it is plain ignorance to suggest that Lady GaGa is not talented. Here we have an artist who achieved mega stardom at the age of 21 on MERIT, by writing her own music, being an innovator in bringing a new kind of pop to the fore, and basically not giving a fuck what people said about her, rumours and all. As I say, not for everyone, but clearly a very talented individual.

I kinda disagree with that to a degree. Sure, her music isn't the regular ol' pop record for cute little teeny girls to dance around to and sing all the words that have no meaning to them (them being the listeners). But, the way she dresses and every little thing she does and says is an image builder in order for her to be this monsterous celebrity with all these massive hits and continuous success. I don't really believe that some of the things she sayhs is true because she was told to say some of them to make her appear like some genius artist. Is she writing soulful music? Perhaps. Is she truly expressing her views? Perhaps. Is everything she does truly only for the sake of being heard rather than an enormous paycheck?

Same story with other bands. Oasis for example. Started out as this group of talented working class brothers who got together a few friends. Formed this family feud between Noel and Liam. Noel is seen as this new musical visionary. Liam, as the little arrogant brother. Maybe all of that was true, who knews. But did they ultimately get load of cash for it after album after the next got more and more stale?

This. I have no problem in admitting that in my opinion, Gaga is far more talented than Greenday.

Bands who pander to fans will almost always face diminishing returns and find themselves in a creative rut. There is always going to be a portion of the audience who, for whatever reason, dislikes any new album, and will express their viewpoint in black and white terms. And people love making snap judgements - especially now in the era of zero patience. So the popular consensus of an album is always skewed toward the reactionary, at least for a time after its release.

My point is, high sales figures don't mean something is good, but at the same time, what people (by and large idiots) think about something also doesn't mean something is good. I would go as far as to say that the vast majority of people listen to music in a very limited way, and allow a vast array of external factors shape their views. People who like mid-level artists don't like top-level artists and dismiss the successful as "talentless" or somehow culturally valueless. Worse, when a mid-level band is perceived as moving up in popularity, because suddenly it's a betrayal. No-one has an entirely objective opinion about anything, let alone music, but if you try to not let these subjective factors influence your opinion, then I say your opinion is more valid and more objective. That is what I aspire to anyway.

So any talk of American Idiot being a sell-out record, or any of that, is utterly irrelevant. If you listened to it without the prejudice of having heard it played on TV and radio, without any knowledge of its sales figures, and listened to it purely as a piece of music, your opinion might well be different. I don't think Green Day lost any musical credibility in releasing that album, but then I also don't think they had much to lose. But hey, call me Hippocrites the Great.

Musically speaking, seeing as I believe she has a degree in it and she wrote for labels starting at like 18 I'd consider Gaga better than Green Day. However they've been my favorite band for years and I listen to Death Metal for the most part. I consider American Idiot a decent album by Green Day that simply doesn't sound like Green Day. If you think of it that way it's fine. However, 21CB is their attempt at trying to be mature and was God awful and that's not really selling out either because it's actually less commercial than most of their records. Eithe way it fucking sucks.

From like 05-now there's been some quality tech death records out. Cannibal Corpse' Kill which is pretty technical, the two Faceless albums,Spawn of Posession's latest which was in 06, Origin's shit,Suffocation's Blood Oath and self titled even though their first 3 were the true masterpieces, and a few more. Also I've been getting into some alternative hip hop like B.O.B,K'naan, Wiz Khalifa (holy shit man so chill),Eminem's newest though Relapse had sick lyrics, a decent amount of music.

You clearly don't know who you're talking to, or, for that matter, what forkboy's trying to say. It's moronic to suggest that a massively successful album that is pre-dated by a string of not quite as successful albums 'turned people off' to Greenday. Yes, it may have pissed off old fans, but how can you possibly suggest that "more and more people finally began agreeing on the fact that Greenday sucks" when it's their second most popular record. Clearly, from a number stand point, there's hardly ever been a time when more people liked them.

Utterly moronic. READ WHAT YOU SAID. READ WHAT I REPLIED TO.

"More people finally agreeing on the fact that Green Day sucks" when more people bought it than any album they've released since 1994 means that your original point was wrong. I said absolutely nothing about its quality (because it is subjective. All I'll say is that it's not in my collection), I was answering your point which was stupid. But not as stupid as you missing your own point.

Anyone who says Lady Gaga and/or Britney Spears are not talented is clearly trying to be a follower with all the anti-pop/pop music rebells. If she wasn't talented she wouldn't be where she is at today. (As annoying as that sounds, think about it!) No doubt Lady Gaga is talented, because you can be talented at being a good gimmick in the industry. You can be talented at eating people's mind with a certain image/look. You can be talented at writing hit songs. But is she original? HELL NO. It's funny because then the Madonna fans come in and say if it wasn't for Madonna Lady Gaga wouldn't be here, yet they don't know what they are talking about. Last time I checked Madonna was never original. So it's like a copycat copying another copycats work. While it's pleasing and it seems original it is not. Just because you never seen it before, doesn't mean it's original.

On to the sales. Pop/Rock will always be dominant in the market, because it's appealing to people (Like Gildermershina said) that have zero patience. That's just how it is. Don't get pissed off because not everyone is a music nerd and not everyone takes music seriously. There are a certain type of music I don't like and will most likely ever like because I gave my all already to like it and it never worked. It doesn't mean I completely give up on the genre and it doesn't mean i have the right to call them talentless.

You can say you don't like the type of music, but saying the person is not talented simply because you don't like that type of music it's just plain being rebellious.........and stupid.

I don't think Brittney Spears is talented at all. She's big because 1 she was on disney channel and already had recognition and 2 because she was a hot jailbait chick who could sing well enough that they could edit her voice and she knew how to dance. Not really talented seeing as she lipsyncs. I'm not trying to be some rebel, I just don't find her talented whatsoever, she was simply used to attract younger girls and pervs. She was the Miley Cyrus of her time. You don't have to be good to sell millions, look a Soulja Boy. You only need 2 things really. You have to be attractive and make a catchy tune or two, that's really all there is to it and she did it of course she had several catchy hits. If she wrote her own songs I'd respect her a lot more.

Wow the ignorance in your post seriously hurts my brain and did you just completely ignore what I just said?

First of all, Britney Spears didn't become big because she was in the Disney Channel. She became big because she worked her ass off to release the first hit single they wrote for her at the time for her first album. From performing across malls in america, signing as many copies as she could to....... releasing a very controversial music video to a very catchy song at the time. That's what really sparked her career. Getting into the Disney Channel was not an easy thing to do in the first place. She was considered an average comedic actress at the time but Britney Spears was always talented since she was a little kid. If you look at her tapes when she was younger you can clearly see what her talent is (Sining and dancing). Unlike Miley Cyrus, Britney spears had to fight to where she was at the time and not get her famous one hit wonder daddy to get her into the business. That is less respectable in my opinion.

Britney spears is known for entertainment and just like a painter is talented at painting, Britney spears is TALENTED at entertaining.

People who say Britney Spears is a horrible singer are the people who think that just because she is miming she can't sing. Those people are the followers and pop rebells (EX: you) and obviously with her rapidly fast pop music and the image that backs it up, she can't sing on most of her songs. She's an entertainer on stage and in camera. Britney spears herself admitted that she would love to have a better voice or even a voice like Christina Aguilera. SHE ADMITTED IT. Does that mean she is not talented? Of course not.

An actually in Britney's defense once again, producers have said that while Britney Spears doesn't have the voice she has, Britney can hit certain notes that many singers cannot. and that has so far remained the most underrated thing about her voice. Also Britney has written some of her songs, she just doesn't go the extra mile with it, because she doesn't need to. She's already established herself as an entertainer unless she decides to change that in the future some how. There are plenty fake videos out there claiming that they are exposing Britney's voice. But since the rebells make it seem that she cannot sing and they use any performance were Britney makes a mistake to back it up, they are believed by people like you.

Addition: also comparing Britney Spears to Souljaboy and Miley Cyrus was clearly the wrong idea. Miley Cyrus is talented and the girl actually sings while performing. But the impact Britney made when she was her age was much more bigger than Miley Cyrus.

By comparing her to Miley Cyrus I meant the whole gigantic teen pop star who started on Disney channel, I know that Miley actually sings and also writes a great deal of her songs. I am not what you call a so called "pop rebel" I enjoy Lady Gaga's music a ton. I just don't think Brittney is that great of an artist. Whether you work hard or not, you had to when she became famous unlike nowadays where even ripoffs get big (the whole make a song about a dance sort of thing with the soulja boy dance, that retarded dougie dance, the stanky leg,and jerking). Anyway, even if you work hard at something doesn't mean you're necessarily good.I think that as a child she was actually better simply because a child getting famous is pretty cool though now it's less cool. I don't think she can't sing because she's miming. I think she can't sing because her voice is enhanced digitally to the point that it wouldn't sound like her virtually at all if she sang to you directly.Yes she is talented at entertaining people and has managed to do so since she was little, which I respect a great deal for longevity's sake, but as an artist as a whole, not just dancing and entertaining but the entire package, I don't find her very talented. Lady Gaga for example, is miles ahead of her. She writes ALL of her songs not some (by the way every hit Brittney has had like Hit my baby one more time, toxic, oops I did it again,Womanizer,Circus,if you seek Amy,basically all of the hits. Have not been written by her).Gaga also sings live and dances as well making her entertaining but showing musical skill as well. Just because you can sing high doesn't mean you're good at singing either. I mean seriously, there were plenty of hair metal singers in the 80's who could sing high but with the exception of Bruce Dickinson and Rob Halford they all pretty much sucked, not to mention Power Metal who's men specialized in operatic singing and falsettos.

Addition:I wouldn't really say that Brittney's impact was bigger simply because Miley is very scandalous constantly so all eyes are always on her. Not to mention her movies and tv show, but I don't really care since I don't particularly like either of them.

My annoyance is not that you don't like her or think she's a great artist. My annoyance is you saying that she has not talent. I'm aware that everyone has an opinion, but her having a talent is a fact. Yes her voice is enhanced digitally, and all that good stuff but she has sung at interviews and she sings pretty good. I don't know if she still can sing now a this moment but it's just one of those things you never forget to do. There is a difference between sounding good and knowing how to sing and Britney knows how to sing. There are videos out there, look for them. The fact that you can work hard at something is acceptable. Not many people can do what Britney did at such an age, living up to the whole busy schedule and all the demands. Why do you think she went berserk and shaved her head. (Yeah she did it for attention, but that's what fame and the torture sh was going through made her do. It made her feel better. Sort of like cutters(people who cut themselves)

Now on to Gaga. Gaga has an undeniable voice and she is an incredible songwriter. Lady Gaga is a musician (Britney is not) and an entertainer(Britney is). That's the difference. On the music department Lady Gaga is way more intelligent and experienced (I can even say) than Britney but entertaining wise, I don't think so. Britney is a much better dancer than Lady Gaga in so many levels. In fact, all Lady Gaga can really do is jerk and twitch and jump around a little. But that's just my opinion on the whole comparison to Lady Gaga. Now on the "artist" department, they are both equally shameless gimmicks. So Lady Gaga is no better than Britney in my opinion, even though she writes and sings better.

I said she was a good entertainer. I think Gaga's live shows as a whole are better, she really knows how to go over the top.
