NATTY DREAD Band Members: Percival MarleyNathaniel ToshFontleroy WailerHammerPoliroquiLocation: Cardiff Music Genre: Reggae-Thrash-Jazz Fusion Unless you happen to be from the South Wales area the Name Natty Dread will mean little to you. However, take a look at the name of the band members and there is a ring of familarity that will strike a chord with reggae fans across the world.
Natty Dread are/were essentially a cover band featuring distant (very distant) relatives of the original Bob Marley and The Wailers. Percy, Nathaniel and Fontleroy had been touring the Wales and West pubs, clubs and holiday park circuits for the best part of three decades covering tracks by Marley and building up a modest following allowing them to earn a modest living from their traditional tribute act.
What is special about this band you may ask? Haven't I seen it all before? The answer is "yes, you had" but that was before Natty Dread took the bold step (this after 28yrs) of introducing something new into their group.
Natty Dread have embraced two new members in Hammer and the elegantly named Poliroqui. Hammer of course is the infamous drummer who nearly had an audition with Sepultura but was refused on the basis that his music was too satanic. Poliroqui simply plays the saxaphone in a style reminiscent of early Acid Jazz.
Add these two vey distinctive styles to the gently beats of Natty Dread's authentic Reggae sound and we could be in for a musical revolution. The new look Natty Dread played to 750 people at the Cardiff Labour Club last week receiving rave reviews from local press resulting in clubs in the region scrambling to book them - Butlins have already secured them for the next two weeks.
Historically, Natty Dread were predictable, pleasant enough but with nothing new and seemed doomed to tour the pubs and clubs for ever. However, their creation of Reggae-Jazz-Thrash Fusion is causing a stir - they may be aged, they may be unsigned but it seems that Natty Dread are destined for something special. They are, of course, without a label at the moment but with the momentum and media coverage they are currently receiving it is highly unlikely that they will remain unsigned for long.
Look out for Natty Dread - they are coming! In the words of their frontman, Percy Marley -God Speed!

Reggae-Jazz-Thrash?? Oh my god, this sounds amazing. I can't wait to hear your stuff; it probably sounds nothing like mainstream music, and I mean that in the best possible way!

Ah, thanks for your sweet sweet thoughts.
Much much more to follow but for now we must spend some time with the Blue Coats (we signed a contract) but hoping to have a label soon.
Our music is raw man, almost heavenly and if we can keep Tosh stoned and Hammer sober we could be something special man, we really could.
Right now, I'm needed for Agadoo (it's in the contract with Pontins!).
