GIG REVIEW
Saturday, 14th August, 2010 The Roxy Theatre, Sunset Boulevard, West Hollywood

UserPostedImage

Tonight Stacey Walton makes her live USA debut at the Roxy Theatre in West Hollywood, California. She’s currently in California writing and recording but she has arranged this one of show on Sunset Boulevard. It’s an iconic venue which has hosted the likes of Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Slash, Motley Crue and Guns N Roses. Music which has clearly influenced Stacey’s style and music.
It will no doubt be a daunting prospect for her making her first US solo gig appearance and it’s important for her to realise that the LA crowds are very different to the ones she’s used to in the UK, it’s a Saturday night and the crowd are rowdy and restless from not being aloud into the venue until 20 minutes before she‘s due onstage, let‘s hope she can turn this crowd around and get them onside early on in the performance.

It’s 8:40 and we’re now allowed into the theatre, as the crowd packs into the iconic venue drinks are quickly ordered and everyone begins to settle into their position in the audience, pushing and shoving is going on and by 8:55 everything now seems in order with the crowd.
The lights have now gone down and the announcer’s voice appears over the tanoy system. “Ladies and Gentleman, please welcome, England’s hottest music talent right now, Miss Stacey Walton.”
Average cheers and applause are the response to the announcer and the lights go back up and out walks Stacey Walton with her drummer John Crystal, and her Bass player, Mike Jones. Stacey steps up to centre stage, waves and smiles at the crowd, and grabs the mic “How’s everyone doing tonight, I’m making my US debut tonight and I’m here to create a great rock and roll atmosphere, so drink as much as you can and get wasted because that’s what tonight’s about. Alright here goes, this first song is about fucking. It’s called You Shook Me All Night Long.”
She begins the intro to the iconic rock song and as the first vocal comes up it’s evident that she’s not gonna hit the high ACDC-Esque notes. It’s a more sombre version of the song and throughout it she thrusts her body forward and smiles suggestively to the crowd, the cheer as she moves closer to the edge of the stage and reaches out to the crowd, at the end of the song she winks to an audience member in the front row, she then makes her way back to the microphone stand and finishes the song. She then takes a drink out of bottle of lager and walks over to John Crystal the drummer and it appears that she’s changing the Setlist early on in the performance.

“I’m debuting a couple of songs this evening, And this next song is the title track from my upcoming debut album, it’s called The Sun Always Rises.”
She begins the song with an instrument I haven’t seen for a long time, the maraca has made a return to the world of music tonight and she shakes them four times and throws them to the back of the stage. And begins playing the guitar intro to The Sun Always Rises. She moves her shoulders up and down throughout the performance and blows a kiss to a guy in the front row. She smiles and walks over to the drums, the music stops dead and then with one mighty strike, she smashes the head of her Fender guitar off the cymbals of the drums and begins the music up again with a dramatic shout, THE SUN ALWAYS RISES. With that signals the end of the songs first ever live performance.

“Next up is a song about following your dreams, It’s another new song which has never been played live before, It’s called Don’t Look Back.”
The sound of the pounding drums signals the beginning of the song, Stacey steps to the front of the stage and plays the guitar faultlessly, she grasps the mic stand and lifts it into the air before bringing it back down. She takes the microphone out of the stand. She steps right to the edge of the stage and screams, Forget The Courage That You Lack/Follow Your Dreams/And Baby Don’t Look Back. She puts the mic back onto the stand and hands her Fender guitar back to the guitar tech at the side of the stage.
She steps up to the microphone and begins talking to the audience, “How’s everyone doing tonight, It’s been a crazy couple of weeks for me, It’s my first time in California and it’s been amazing but sadly I’ve got to leave tomorrow to get back to London, so I want some lasting memories from tonight, So here’s what I want to do.” She stops talking and looks around for a couple of seconds, she takes a couple of steps back before running forward and leaping into the audience, It’s something we don’t see as much these days but she’s brought it back for tonight as she’s crowd surfing. She ends up crowd surfing for almost 2 minutes before making her way back to the stage.

As she gets back on the stage she grabs the microphone, “That was fucking incredible. Alright back to performing. This one‘s called Remember Winter.”
She takes an acoustic guitar for this one and it’s just her alone without her backing band. It’s a more intimate song which is evident by the reaction of the crowds to take there phones and lighters and raise them in the air, it’s an age old cliché but it makes for a good atmosphere, She smiles once during the song and she’s clearly emotional when singing this song, It’s quite a difference compared to her other songs. As the song finishes she acknowledges the crowds reaction, “Thanks guys, you’ve been amazing tonight.”
She leaves the stage for a moment and returns as the applauds sound.

“Alright, this next song is called English Girls Are Easy.”
She doesn’t play guitar on the final two songs, performing on piano with the two most popular songs of hers, English Girls Are Easy and A Tender Kiss. It appears that she’s also a very talented piano player which is something I don‘t think people are aware of, she‘s clearly a talented individual. She provides the crowd with a bit of comedy as the song is more light hearted.

Next up is a Tender Kiss which gets a huge reaction from the crowd, It’s performed immaculately on piano and it become a more beautiful song on the piano compared to the single which was performed with a guitar, the guitar has a more rock thrust to it but the piano version turns it into a more softer song with the beautiful piano playing, it’s not too fast but it’s not too slow, it’s perfection. The song draws to a close and the crowd seem mesmerized by what they’ve seen tonight, as she stands from the piano the crowd give her a huge standing ovation and applaud for over 2 minutes, she stands with her backing band at centre stage and nods her head, smiles, winks and waves, she even steps forward to touch the enthusiastic fans in the front row.

An incredible debut US performance for the Londoner and she has a bright future ahead of her.

I like the crowd. I’ve always done that. The crowd means that you gonna get a more numbers on those funny papers you can get from the bank. But more than that, it encourages you to go on with what you’re doing and time after time show that those papers are wrong about you.
To be a part of the crowd, well I don’t think I liked that as much. But what the hell, this looked promising and it was a welcome change in our own little road trip around the US.
It was Bobby who had caught the name from one of the posters outside the place.
“Isn’t that the girl? You know, her with the album cover they showed on the net?” Of course it was her. I had promised myself to look up the whole review and all, but simply hadn’t found time for it. But why read when she was right there? I made a quick call. Canceled our own show that night with the motivation of good reasons. I paid for the whole damn thing after all and California was worth to see again on the way back home (and so I learned that there’s quite a size difference between driving right across America and driving right across Sweden).

It took a hell of a time to get in there. You remember the turtles from the… was it 80’s or 90’s, and their disguise? That was pretty much what we looked like. Some cheap shit we picked up in the nearest store. With the exception that we drank beer instead of ate pizza. So we were in a good party mood once we got in and found we had to shed those coats anyway.
I had no idea what I should expect of this evening. I hadn’t heard the girl before, which felt kind of weird since we’ve been in England a lot since our own debut. But the encouragement of drinking and a song about fucking was worth a cheer, and to spill half of it on the guy before me. I didn’t like him anyway.

She made a cleaver move. First thing we heard was some good old rock tones and the audience could catch up on it right away. I know we did atleast. Done in Staceys’ own way, but good in either case.
What was that? Maraca? I did laugh in cheer to see such a thing. Don’t get me wrong. That’s a good thing. I love to see artists experiment and dare to bring on something unexpected, rather than those streamline bands who mostly act like clones. Really, I think we got plenty of that through the night. I haven’t seen some stage diving either before. Not live. I almost began to think those things were just a myth and it was just too bad that we were too far away to take part in the whole thing. Needless to say, we didn’t just get some good new music. We got quite a show as well.
And gave a show, I guess. We were wasted by the third song and figured, what’s a rock concert without some booby show. Too bad we stood far from the first raw and that I don’t have any boobies. Though Bobby’s a strong guy and with some help from another guy next to us, I managed to get up on Bobbys shoulders and flash my chest. I was really proud of myself at that moment. Neither anybody had paid attention or not.

I blame the beer for being caught off guard with two more songs after the show was over, like if it was something exclusive for rock concert. It’s good when we can still fill our lives with surprises when we need them. Even a song we realized that we HAD heard before. Well, thought so atleast. This must have been a new version of it. I think I remember guitars to those tones. But piano too? That girl can play, I tell you. And we could sing along. Which no one else could tell.

In short, it was worth it to take a break from our everyday life. And it was worth to do it by discover a new and interesting act (for me atleast).I have to do this often. Add a woman by my side and there’s not much more I could ask for from an evening.

OOC: I wouldn't consider it short at all... the only reason it might look small is because of the font. The detail and everything is perfect, you've really been improving on your posts recently!

Ronny, that was a terrific addition to the RP. I've never seen a reply to a post that detailed before, congrats mate!

(Bringing together an eclectic group of influences, Ulysses' songs are sung with carefree abandon by Nick Junk)

Kurt Ulysses - Songwriter, Guitarist, Backup Vocalist
Nick Junk - Vocals, Mojo

Infinite- Alternative/Experimental Rock; influenced by Muse, Radiohead, and The Beatles

(Known best for their experimental music and their frontman's eccentric behavior, the band disbanded after Eric Quillington's death to pursue solo careers or, in Matt Robert's case, peace of mind. Infinite released four albums over the course of their career; Blue Nebula, Midnight Skies, Insomnia, and Dancing about Architecture.)

"When asked 'how do you write?' I invariably answer, 'one word at a time', and this answer is invariably dismissed. But that's all it is. It sounds too simple to be true, but consider the Great Wall of China, if you will: one stone at a time, man. That's all. One stone at a time. But I've read you can see that motherfucker from space without a telescope."

Glamazon: What a brilliant performance, sweetheart! I wish I could have been there to see you perform but I know you rocked it anyway.

OOC: I don't think it was too short at all, I'd say it was actually a really good length as really long RP's can be a bit off putting to some, great as usual!

Eh, you know, take it or leave it man. This is the kind of stuff that's been going on for decades, and will for so much longer. It's just asking yourself if you buy into that whole, "life's a big party" thing, you know? I mean, I went down that road, and there's just one step between a good time and binging, purging, all that bullshit. Having come out the other side, I don't get it. Hey, I guess you can't sell everyone on that kinda stuff. Whatever, I'm sure your a fucking great person, but I'm not gonna stand up and give you an award or anything for continuing a timeless dream. Good luck, I guess.

Stacey: I'm fine with you calling it pop, because it has pop elements I guess, but if I'm honest I'd prefer for it not to be labeled as pop music but I wouldn't go as far to forbid it.
