never been a fan of regular punk, nor am i going to stray into the category of pop punk -shivers- but post punk is fine, because many alternative rock artists i like are in that category. |

It is a meaningless term Maybe it means something to someone somewhere, but to me it just enlightens me exactly not at all. yeah, ppl tend to through the word "punk" around like it's the four-dollar-hooker behind your local neighborhood pharmacy. like dance punk? who the fuck dances to music based upon rebellion and hardship? pop punk confuses me because punk was meant to be originally deprived from the mainstream roots. making pop punk as an appealing sound of youth in revolt that moms can smile for? well, can't say pop punk is very clean and radio-friendly, but it sure is a stupid genre imo, and all the profanities in pop punk are either say "fuck" or "shit" a couple of times, and all of the sudden they're the baddest of the bad. then i hear about art punk? wtf is art punk? i'm not even going into that it, but apparently it sounds something like indie rock but for like "intellectuals". and the worst thing is that regular punk rockers are viewed as some lame ass genre full of college dropouts who are bad ppl because they don't have a job or do drugs. Well, not all "punks" as some call them wanted to be punks. A great deal of them formed for good reasons like protesting the American government during a difficult time period of tension overseas to keep the future bright for an american ideal of life wouldn't cease to exist, at least any time soon. but my point is that punk doesn't mean anything anymore to the new generation and its feeders of interests (ie. mtv, island records, pixar, etc.). |

Sound's like quite a good idea to me, what better way to reach a wide audience of people than by putting though provoking and meaningful lyrics into a mainstream, accessible, dance tune? Day's are gone when it was seen as rebellion to write a crunching guitar riff and sing about politics over the top, I don't think that works anymore, I think if you wanna change the way people think in music you should do it to the masses, because at the end of the day what's the point writing a song about how fucked up the government is if no ones going to care to listen? Whether or not my theory can actually work practically, and if there's anyone who can actually do it effectively, is another thing entirely :P Still, that's not really relevant to the thread topic, I've just been bursting to put that theory in somewhere. |

Listen to early fucking punk. Buzzcocks, Ramones even, how is that not pop punk? And as for art punk: The Clash were art school kids. I don't get your point. Tho to be fair I'm not sure that any type of music really is rebellious these days, and I also don't think that intelligent lyrics to a dance tune is going to be much point, they don't really pay much attention to the lyrics, on the whole?
