This question was brought up in my class today and I chose The Doors because frankly I've never been a big Beatles fan while I've loved most of The Doors work. Anyone else got a take on this?

The Beatles annihilate, in my humble opinion. I mean, just listen to Helter Skelter. The Doors are overrated.

The Beatles definitely.
I've never been a big fan of the Doors, there's some amazing songs by them but for me it's all about Jim Morrison the guys everything you want from a rockstar but The Beatles walk it.

If only you weren't taking an exaggerated reactionary position and had a rational opinion about The Beatles.

I am being rational...I have heard the Beatles many times in my 22 years and 11 months. Have lived with massive Beatles fans and have given them every chance I could to try and like them. And I genuinely think they are garbage. Not a reactionary position at all, just an honest and genuine opinion.

That just seems crazy though. Certainly they are overrated, but they're obviously historically important, and their career is varied enough that it seems like the only way someone wouldn't like at least some portion of their canon would be that they cannot stand well-written pop songs from the 60s. Me, I don't really like early Beatles, and McCartney songs are often hit and miss for me, but the tail end of the catalogue is full of gems. People always talk about Sgt. Pepper and Revolver, but Abbey Road I think is the closest to a masterpiece.

But my point is, it seems to me like considering them "garbage", or whatever other word you choose to use is an over-inflation. I just can't imagine anyone that genuinely offended by the sound of the Beatles. After all, so much of the rest of music history derives from the Beatles in some way, that they're some almost some baseline for what's acceptable pop music. In a sense, they've shaped what people expect from music in such a drastic and widespread way that'd it'd almost be like saying "I think the work of Shakespeare is valueless drivel."

Well if we're talking about literature I rather hate Macbeth. I can say that I enjoy the work of Ernest Hemmingway and Orson Welles more. Going by that I also enjoy say "Apocalypse Now" more than "Citizen Kane". I also enjoy "Black Sabbath" way more than "The Beatles". If you're historically important, that's great. Sure "The Beatles" helped form the line for acceptable pop music but musicians like Buddy Holly and "The Ink Spots" set the bar for them and in my opinion are better as well.

I also favor the Kinks more as well when I think about it. "Sunny Afternoon" stands as one of my favorite songs ever.

The Rolling Stones man. They have some awesome songs, but alot of the stuff on their albums sounds really kinda slack and flabby to me. It's disappointing to be honest. And honestly, don't think the Stones ever really got near to The Beatles when it comes to either creativity or perfect pop songs. Because that to me is what Strawberry Fields Forever is. And even the earlier Beatles music has grown on me in the past year.

My exposure to The Doors is significantly less than to The Beatles, but I don't think it's really all that close. Kinks are a band that I've fallen in love with in 2010, I guess I'd have them above The Stones & The Doors, but behind The Beatles.
