A Special Announcement from the humble Eric Quillington....

UserPostedImage

ARE YOU READY FOR SOME GODAMN CHRISTMAS CAROLS?!!

Snow falling from the skies. Miseltoe is hanging from the ceiling. Santa's creepin' up on your roof. It's the season of giving, my friends. So we, being the caring band that we are, have decided to give you the greatest Christmas Single of all time.

OF ALL TIME!!!

Now, we are well aware that's a fairly large boast. But, deal with it, because the three of us can pull this off. I mean, we're Infinite, for Christ's sake. Remember the intense mindfucks by the names of Blue Nebula and Midnight Skies? Well, WE made those. You're welcome. Now, this single is basically a cover of the genius known as Paul McCartney's song 'Wonderful Christmas Time'. Such a happy song, and it's covered by the most depressing band of all time. That would be us, by the way.

The first of the B-Sides is a guitar-melody of Carol of the Bells. Now, yes, this concept is fairly old and cliched. But it's never been done by me before, so the other tries don't count. My one-night stand's brother, Greg Oldson, is the singer of the other B-Side. You won't miss my silky voice on this song too much, because he's gonna be screaming the Christmas Classic 'Silent Night'. Yeah, you heard me; it's a Christmas Carol gone metal. What more could you possibly want?

So, in conclusion, the 'Infinite Christmas Single' is face-melting. It's genius, it's revolutionary, it's astounding. And the proceeds and profit of this single are going to a charity, so all you religious folks won't feel guilty about buying it. There isn't a single godamn reason to NOT vote for this song on the Top 20, but if you don't...

THEN RUDOLPH WILL EAT YOUR BRAINS FOR BREAKFAST!!!

Happy Holidays! :)

Dear All,

Well, howdy do. I've been taking a bit of a break from the spotlight, because I've been working on two albums; Insomnia and Dividing Divinity. The former is by the greatest rock trio on Earth (that would be us, by the way), and the latter is by the greatest musical duo on Earth (that would be Project; Prometheus). I'm here to report that the recording sessions for Insomnia are officially underway, and have been sporadically going on for about a month. There isn't really a release-date for the album, as Infinite always fails to meet deadlines, but the earliest release date would probably be sometime in late February.

There isn't much I'm willing to say about our third album at the moment; Greg and Matt would completely murder me if I revealed too much information on the album. We've got to be somewhat suspenseful, I guess. It apparently keeps the fans interested. All I can really say is that this is our darkest-sounding album yet. Midnight Skies was a bit too optimistic for my likings, so Insomnia will be stylistically similar to our first album while keeping the advanced lyrical and conceptual themes of our second. If Midnight Skies and Blue Nebula had a love-child, this would be it. Also, Matt and Greg have had a much more active role in the lyrics on this album, as well. We're basically the Beatles now, in regards to recording. It fucking rules.

Now, on to the really exciting news. On each Monday for the month of January, one track from Insomnia will be released online. These four tracks (not revealing which ones yet) will give all you fans out there a great example of what to expect on Infinite's third album. The first song to be posted, which will happen tomorrow, is A Town Called Insomnia. One final thing; at the bottom of this post, I'm including a list of all the songs we've been working on so far. I'm sure the three of us will bring more ideas to the table, so this isn't the finalized list.

Cheers!

-Eric Quillington

January Sessions: A Town Called Insomnia

Song Description

Originally recorded for Infinite's second album, 'A Town Called Insomnia' is interesting in the fact that it technically isn't even a song. Heavily inspired by the circus, and The Beatles song 'Being For The Benefit of Mr. Kite', Eric Quillington sought to create a recreation of a carnival. With background instrumental noises provided by Quillington, Greg Oldson, and Jason Smith (the producer of 'Insomnia'), Quillington's vision is realized. A noteworthy fact of this song is the quiet and subdued voices of the members in the audience of the 'circus'; they consist of the four members of Mind, and of Quillington's family. As his mother had passed away long before the creation of this song, her recording consists of a small snippet of a home video-recording of a family picnic. Although the Lithe family was initially uncertain about it's inclusion, they were eventually convinced that it would be a wonderful tribute.

Quillington steps away from singing in this song, and instead steps into the spoken role of a Circus Ringmaster. Oddly enough, the lyrics are quite different from a ringmaster's usual job of introducing the show; they consist of a charismatic salesman talking to his audience about a town that grants eternal youth. Entrance to the paradise, called Insomnia, costs nothing more than 'a shiny penny'. The incredible deal is undercut by the final lines, when the Ringmaster subtly announces that the price of Insomnia grants him happiness, and not the members of the audience. Their fate is, at this point in the album, unknown.

The lyrics of this song, and the idea of a town by the name of Insomnia granting eternal youth, were considered too out-of-place for Midnight Skies (the album it was initially recorded for). However, Infinite realized the potential of the song, and eventually agreed that their next album would be based around the themes prevalent in this song. 'A Town Called Insomnia' will be the opening track for Infinite's third album, which is expected to be released in late February.

When Matt Roberts was asked why he had no part in the creation of this song, he merely replied, "I have no interest in that circus bullshit."

Lyrics

"Welcome, one and all, to a town called Insomnia
Step on up and you will see your dreams realized
Pay nothing more than a shiny penny
And your life with be filled with endless days and nights
For living in Insomnia grants you eternal youth

All the skeptics in the audience need merely to ask themselves;
“Is simple human cynicism worth losing the gift of a lifetime?”
I am but a simple salesman, yet my words speak loud and true
Mostly the former, but you won’t notice after I give these gifts to you
For living in Insomnia places your face towards the sun

Wave goodbye, one and all, to your possessions of this world
In its place will be a world unspeakable in its beauty
Basking in eternal light will give you proof you made the right choice
Although this world is priceless, all deals are final
For living in Insomnia gives me all my hopes and desires"

January Sessions: Vague Similarities

Song Description

One of the most unsettling songs on Infinite's upcoming album, 'Vague Similarities' was imagined to be a merging of the themes and styles of the band's two previous releases; it contains the menacing tone and simple nursery-rhyme lyrics of 'Blue Nebula', but also carries over the complex instrumentals and willingness to experiment from 'Midnight Skies'.

The opening piano keys, played by Greg Oldson, immediately set the chilling vibe that the remainder of the song follows. Eric Quillington sings in a low, almost mumbled, singing voice that is completely removed of all emotion. This creates the most striking aspect of the song; the descriptive and emotional lyrics are sung with an almost passive indifference, suggesting that the narrator no longer cares about the outcome of the conflict. Each verse also has progressively increased instrumentals: the first simply contains Greg's keyboard-playing and Eric's singing, the second brings in Matt Robert's bass-riff and Quillington's subdued and distorted guitar, and so forth. This reaches it's climax in the third verse, which is essentially a nightmarish collage of music consisting of wailing guitars, distorted bass, faint background noises of fires and screams, all played against Quillington's almost monotone singing.

All sounds then abruptly end, with the mournful piano opening brought back to center stage. Quillington sings a fourth and final verse of how 'all past rights have been wronged', before the piano riff closes the song. Lyrically, this song is about the quiet hatred many civilians can feel towards a revolution, especially if they don't support the causes. Quillington has stated that this song is influenced by the Russian Revolution of 1917, and the horrifying effects the resulting Soviet Union had on it's citizens. The sarcastically indifferent line, 'it brings me down' that serves as the end of each verse effectively sums up the themes of this song.

When asked about how fans will respond to the song, Eric Quillington said, "It'll be very divided. Some fans will love it for being a return to roots, in a sense; it's got a very 'Blue Nebula' vibe to it, which was the goal from the outset. But, it's also continuing the musical development we've been making on previous albums, and really takes it to the next level. I'm sure there will be fans who love it for those reasons, but there will also be those who hate it for being pretentious and self-indulgent. But, that's okay, it is pretentious and it is self-indulgent at certain points. It just all depends on whether people like that kind of stuff, that'll influence their opinion. Call me egocentric, but I really hope this song will become a fan-favorite."

Lyrics

"The boiling of the bloodstream is building up inside of me
Air is so black, the air is so black
It brings me down

The endless possibilities are shot down before they can bloom
Skin is so blue, the skin is so blue
It brings me down

The windows are shut to blind ourselves of what’s outside
Eyes are so white, the eyes are so white
It brings me down

The city is so silent now that past rights have been wronged
Water is so red, the water is so red
It brings me down"

It might be a bit tough to carve all those words into the small space of a forehead, but if you did... you'd be the most hardcore Infinite fan EVER. Oh, and that was probably the coolest thing anybody's ever said to show their appreciation for this band; I love you, man!

January Sessions: Shades of Grey

Song Description

While the previous two songs on 'January Sessions' have shown Eric Quillington focusing on various techniques to singing (the speaking on 'Town Called Insomnia' and the monotone and lifeless vocals on 'Vague Similarities'), 'Shades of Grey' is one of the most powerful and emotional vocal performances of Quillington's career. In a way, this is Infinite stripped to the metaphorical bone;

The song begins with a simple acoustic strumming pattern by Matt Roberts, which continues for several seconds without any other noises. Quillington's melancholy vocals soon after join in the mix, in a way that exposes the narrator's sadness and regret without seeming angst-ridden. The singer has stated that he was most influenced by John Lennon's vocal performance of 'Imagine' when recording this song. The only sounds heard for the first two verses are Quillington's vocals and Robert's acoustic strumming, but Oldson's quiet drumming enters the fray for the third verse. After the third verse, all noises cut out except for the acoustic strumming. A piano, played by Quillington, can be heard mimicking the song's vocal melody before a gentle fade-out.

Quillington went through numerous lyrical changes before finally settling on the finalized version. The repeating line of, 'But you don't care because you're preoccupied with shades of grey' was changed because, in his own words, it made the song seem too political. In addition, he had no intention of the song appearing that it was blaming a specific person for what's wrong with the world, and simply wanted the song to be a universal acceptance of the evils in the world.

When asked about how he felt about the song, Greg Oldson said, "I'm rather fond of it, actually. Almost every album has the typical 'sad ballad', but I really think ours is something special. Quillington's vocals are usually so sarcastic and indifferent, so it's really powerful to hear him sing with such emotion. There's an elegance in it's simplicity, too; there aren't any added instrumentals to make it sound more rich and complex, it's just a straightforward barring of the soul. It's excusable to show yourself like that every now and then, I think."

Lyrics

"Monday changes to Friday, all in a day
But why should anyone care when they’re preoccupied with shades of grey?
Tracing many circles to see if there’s still a line
Although the edges are jagged, there’s nothing left to refine

These many demons are unfamiliar even at the bay
But why should anyone care when they’re preoccupied with shades of grey?
Bright lights are slowly fading inside of my mind
Missing the lost opportunities that were never even declined

Friday changes to Monday, all in a day
But why should anyone care when we're preoccupied with shades of grey?
The polluted clouds prevent us from seeing the stars align
Although the edges are jagged, there’s nothing left to define"

In a recent interview with NME, the frontman of Infinite was quoted saying;

Eric Quillington wrote:
"Our first single off of 'Insomnia' is a bit of a celebration of the arrogance that comes along with being a rock-star. It's very guitar-driven, and not as trippy or experimental as previous (and upcoming) releases. People have just recently been going on about how I've developed this massive ego, so I thought I'd have a little bit of fun with that concept."

Salt- Initially written as a joking throwaway by Eric Quillington, 'Salt' gradually emerged to become one of the standout tracks on the upcoming album 'Insomnia'. In the words of the writer himself; "I was listening to stuff by Interpol and Joy Division around the time of writing this, and I've noticed that the lyrics can sometimes be annoyingly cryptic. I mean, they're very good, but understanding them can sometimes get to be a bit frustrating. So, I thought; 'Fuck it, I'll just make the most convoluted poem ever, and nobody will be able to figure it out'. So, I did."

From it's sharp blasts of distorted guitar to the driving drum-beats, 'Salt' is one of the most anthem-like songs Infinite has ever written. Matt Roberts voice is also a strong contrast to Quillington's; a deep voice reminiscent of Paul Banks (vocalist of Interpol) and Ian Curtis (vocalist of Joy Division. As if you didn't know that). As mentioned earlier, Quillington was influenced by these two bands while writing this song, so it seemed natural to him that Roberts be the vocalist. After much hounding and begging, the bassist finally agreed.

"Be a gentleman and pass the salt to the lovely lady on your left

All fired up with nowhere to go, your mouth acquainted to nothing but blow
This action seems wrong, you start to feel a tightness in your thong

You call slip, you can fall, but you will never fool us all
Because first you’re strong, then you’re weak, you’re just embarrassing yourself
Oh, please stop acting

Your beauty makes you unique, cutting away is so delicately smooth
Your beauty makes you unique, the skin for one last time can sooth

You can slip, you can fall, but you will never fool us all
Because first you’re strong, then you’re weak, you’re just embarrassing yourself
Oh, please stop acting

Your beauty’s wasted on life, excreting in buckets never seemed so sweet
Your beauty’s wasted on life, loss of movement makes you so elite"

Your Side- The first Infinite song to have been written by someone outside the band, specifically Jason Smith. A chunky, solid and quite slow riff introduces the song loudly as the vocals are improvised in the background. Then, a flurry of drums bangs in as well as a groovy bass line and the guitar goes into a riff that one can only describe as a mixture of Britpop, funk and Post-Hardcore. It is still at the same pace at the beginning, but the guitar is much less distorted, so it seems lighter. It goes straight into the first chorus, with the vocals high pitched, double tracked and anthemic. The opening verse sees the guitar and drums tone it down a bit, allowing the bass and the vocals to really shine through. On the last line of each verse, it bubbles up to its original loudness again. This formula is the same for the verse that comes directly after it, but it changes back to the chorus two times afterwards. After another verse and another chorus following that, it then goes into the bridge. For the bridge, the guitar changes from a major key into a minor key and consists of repetitive power chords amongst an arpeggio bass line and a polyrhythmic drum pattern. Two more final choruses follow and it then goes into the last stanza, which is a mixture of the chorus and bridge with the vocals sung in a dramatic, operatic voice. The drums take centre stage around this part, until it finally explodes into a big band ending and fizzles out solemnly.

"Sing me a song, you can’t go wrong,
Watch the people passing by.
Cry me a song, all day long,
Watch your life slowly flow by.

And let the mouth of the river take you away,
Save your sorrows for another day,
If life is all a dream, taunting me it seems,
I will go out in the cold just to hear you play.

And corrupt the brain that bleeds out from your youth,
All this memory seeming so uncouth,
If you’re just a fragment, of imagination,
I will sing along with you on top the roof!

Sing me a song, you can’t go wrong,
Watch the people passing by.
Cry me a song, all day long,
Watch your life slowly flow by.

Sing me a song, you can’t go wrong,
Watch the people passing by.
Cry me a song, all day long,
Watch your life slowly flow by.

And let the mouth of the river take you away,
Save your sorrows for another day,
If life is all a dream, taunting me it seems,
I will go out in the cold just to hear you play.

Sing me a song, you can’t go wrong,
Watch the people passing by.
Cry me a song, all day long,
Watch your life slowly flow by.

So we fall on our own precipitation,
Feed off the force of your own jubilation.
Paraphrase is just a phase,
Of your own,
It’s your own!

Nothing will be the same,
Ever again,
You’re killing me.
Nothing will be the same,
You’re killing me,
Over again."

Breaking Circles- "This single is meant to be classic rock-n-roll," Eric Quillington explains, "It's a bit different from our usual work, and isn't very representative of the experimental strokes of 'Insomnia', but straying from worn-out path every so often isn't always a bad thing." Although this song was initially written by Quillington as a solo effort, it was finally recorded as an Infinite song. 'Breaking Circles' is very similar to another well-known Infinite song, 'How to Disturb and Alienate Others', in the fact that it contains the same three-verse structure as well as similarly satirical lyrics about fame. The song takes influence from Oasis, which is particularly noticeable in Eric Quillington's sneering vocals. All three members of the band have described 'Breaking Circles' as having an 'Anti-Infinite' attitude.

"Falling asleep at the dawn, I'll see the world holding their breath
I get up at the dusk, and I see that the world was waiting
Never fall, never stumble, never love, never die
There's always time for one more hit

I'm taking a swim through the pool that's both my ego and insecurities
When I get high enough, I'm no longer able to feel the ripples
Never fall, never stumble, never love, never die
There's always time to pretend that you're somebody else

Breaking circles at dawn, I see the world can look past my faults
Reconstructing them at dusk, I'll see the world was waiting for more
Never fall, never stumble, never love, never die
After all, there's always time to forget the consequences"

Personnel

Eric Quillington- Lead Vocalist on 'Breaking Circles' and 'Your Side', Primary Guitarist, Pianist, Lyricist of 'Salt' and 'Breaking Circles'
Matt Roberts- Lead Vocalist on 'Salt', Bassist
Greg Oldson- Drums, Secondary Guitarist
Jason Smith- Lyricist of 'Your Side'

Special thanks to;

- Jason Smith, the lovable teddy-bear rock-star. 'Your Side' is fucking lovely, and it was great to sing lyrics that weren't complete garbage for a change.
- Matt Roberts, for finally agreeing to sing on a track.
- All the wonderful fans who voted our previous album, 'Midnight Skies', to the top of the charts. We hope our upcoming album will be just as well-received.

Background

After Greg Oldson was involved in a near-fatal car crash, Infinite went on an unofficial hiatus for several months. Another single from their second album, 'The Infinity Delusion', was released during this period of inactivity, but wasn't anywhere near as successful as the chart-topping 'Problems with Pluto' had been. Burnt out on their loss of momentum, the constant bickering between Eric Quillington and Greg Oldson almost led to the band's disbanding. The former's newfound creative partnership with Jason Smith (the producer of both 'Midnight Skies and Insomnia'), seemed to lead to the possibility that Infinite was nearing it's end.

Soon, however, Infinite quietly began working it's third album. In an odd parallel to the circumstances that gave birth to 'Blue Nebula', Quillington initially got his two bandmates together to begin work on an EP titled 'Inferno', which would be a musical representation of Dante's travels through the circles of hell. Soon, however, the abundance of material, and shift in lyrical themes, began forming the skeleton to a new album. To complete the metamorphosis from 'Inferno' to 'Insomnia', Quillington found a poem he had written during the record sessions for 'Midnight Skies'. The first line of the poem ('Welcome, one and all, to a town called Insomnia), gave the band a title to the album as well as an over-arching theme to work towards.

After three months of recording, 'Insomnia' is now ready for release.

Brandon: This is beyond highly anticipated. Very excited to hear the full thing, also I like the humour you put into your music, I can't help but look forward to Track 4 on the special edition, when I saw the title I was instantly hearing The Beatles - Maggie Mae, I dunno if it's gonna be anything like that but I can't help but wonder. Looking forward to it.

Why, thank you! Most people don't really notice it, but Infinite doesn't really take it seriously at points. The special edition disk of 'Insomnia' will be our most quirky and bizarre collection of songs yet. The titles kind of indicate what it'll sound like. I'm glad you're excited about this!

It means a lot, coming from someone like you, to regard Infinite's work so highly. To have musical icons as fans of our work is such an incredible feeling!

Well, 'Insomnia' is ready for release. We'll be giving the album to all you gracious fans in the way it's been wildly speculated; the tracks will be released on a day-by-day basis through our website. The first track, 'A Town Called Insomnia', will be available on the 22nd of this month. And, like all the other tracks, it will be free of charge.

Just because we love you!

So, to quell your anticipation in the meantime, here are snippets of the reviews and scores the musical media has given Insomnia. Rolling Stone has once again given our album a 1 out of 5. But, we gather that's because they're saving up the stars for the next time they'll ecstatically give U2 a 6/5 star rating.

Cheers!

Eric Quillington

Q Magazine wrote:
After the creative leap from the brooding 'Blue Nebula' to the trippy dreamscapes of 'Midnight Skies', it's something of a letdown to see how little has changed this time around. Aside from deeper and more complex lyrical themes (as well as a surprise vocal spot by Matt Roberts), there's nothing here that we haven't already heard. Instead of representing leap forward, 'Insomnia' almost seems like a step backwards; a combination of their first two albums. 'With those pesky little rumors that this might be the band's final album, fans will no doubt be disappointed if this turns out to be the iconic band's swan song. While 'Insomnia' is undoubtedly beautiful, there are nagging flaws.

Spin wrote:
For the first time in their career, the trio of Infinite are wearing their emotions on their sleeves. Sarcasm and dark humor is no longer used as a shield, and we are now fully permitted into the mind of Quillington. When the singer announces "All I ever wanted was your love" in an uncharacteristically honest tone of voice, you can't help but feel the band has made a breakthrough. With emotional songs like 'Shades of Grey' balanced out with the enigmatic 'Salt', Infinite has released an album that is both their most cryptic, and most honest.

The Wire wrote:
Fans expecting another hit in the same vein as 'Supernova' or 'Problems with Pluto' will be disappointed. There are no chest-beating anthems to be found on this album, while the quality of the songs are lessened when taken out of context with the album. In many ways, Infinite has taken the patented 'Radiohead' path; each album is it's own work of art, and not a mere collection of songs. None of the singles released off Insomnia will reach the number 1 spot on the 'Top 20', but songs like 'Event Horizon' and 'Beautiful Solace' are the leagues ahead of the band's previous output.

Pitchfork wrote:
It's not so much a reinvention as it is a perfection. The rough edges from their wildly different first two albums have been polished clean, and the result is their most consistently impressive collection of songs to date. With 'Insomnia', Infinite have created their own dark masterpiece.

Los Angeles Times wrote:
The unexpected gem of Infinite's third major release has shown itself to be the 'Special Edition Disc'. Away from the cryptic (but stunning) world of 'Insomnia', the second disk showcases the traits that made the trio an underground hit in the first place; a quirky, offbeat humor in the lyrics combined with a fairly straightforward style of acoustic rock. A must-have for dedicated fans of this band.

Rolling Stone wrote:
With each passing album, Infinite gain more and more respect. With each passing album, Infinite's lyrics become darker and more sophisticated. Yes, you've all heard the cliche sayings that go hand-in-hand with this band, but it's rather startling how little things have changed. Quillington still takes charge of this album as his two bandmates (what're their names again?) relegated to the role of session musicians. Tiresome amounts of depression and angst bring down the quality of the album, making this just as forgettable as Infinite's previous releases.

Dear all,

Well, how many of you are mad at us for delaying the release of Insomnia a month or so? How many of you are mad that it was delayed even though the first song was released for free? Probably all of you. But, we're releasing the album for FREE; the delay won't cost you anything. Some of the songs haven't reached their full potential, so we feel that extra time working on them will make them as perfect as possible. The release date will probably be sometime next month. No specific time, though; Infinite has a long-standing tradition to failing to meet expectations.

We'll be playing some of the songs off of Insomnia on our upcoming tour, though! It's being called 'Just Another US Tour', and has some pretty sensational acts. There's going to be Saburban Sunrise, Fathers of Fury, The Wildflowers, Katie Coyle, and Summerside Session. What's really incredible is that Infinite will be headlining. It means so much to me, since Saburban Sunrise were the band that took us out on our first major tour back when 'Blue Nebula' was released. We've come a long way from there; at that point in time, we were just an opening act, and now we're headlining the damn thing! Really looking forward to this tour, it'll be quite a personal month for us.

Oh, by the way, Matt and I decided to sell our souls to passing trends; we have twitter accounts. The bastard bassist currently has 1,000 more followers than me. IT SUCKS! My loyal Infinite fans, please fix this problem.

Cheers!

-Eric Quillington
