TRACK 8: Atrophy GENRE: Post Metal, Sludge Metal, Noise Rock, Alternative Metal Atrophy, the 8th track on Malfunction, is another new song which almost completely eschews electronics in favor of heavy bass, drums, and distorted, messy guitar. The song establishes a heavy groove right away, and rides that groove straight through the song til the end, with Trent snarling the lyrics against a backdrop of droning, atonal guitars and resounding bass. The vocals are surprisingly clear and undistorted for a Shadowmachine, as Trent wails and screams the lyrics, his voice raw and angry. The instruments have a lot of reverb on them, making the song very noisy and unfriendly sounding, especially if listened to at a high volume. Adding to this is the dissonant, atonal guitars that squeal in the background constantly, making the song sound like a nightmare alarm-clock from some totalitarian dystopian future. The song only gets more abrasive and loud as it progresses, ending loudly and abruptly. |
