Mana Gunray Serpentine profile
Wooddoom/Temple Lantern Caravel Interview

MONGOLBORD SURFINGTURD Newsletter 9

Good grief! It's been a while.

We've been beavering a way on a bunch of stuff we aren't quite ready to announce, but we are proud to finally reveal the secret record we hinted at in the last newsletter.

Presenting a fully collaborative work by Saskatchewan semi-monastic experimental veterans Polyps, and microstatic sound-sculptors Uethröt. I know we say this every time we put out new music, but this is a revelation. A groggy robe-laden jazz headache manipulated and reconstructed on the edge of space and time. It's a whole other thing. I was honoured to take part in what I can safely say was the greatest musical cross-pollination accidents I could ever have conceived. The process was... Well, let's just say it would be impossible to capture that experience on record. Nevertheless, the product speaks for itself. Enjoy.

On top of that we have the very aptly titled Cold a new EP from Wooddoom that follows on from their debut Blight, naturally progressing from pure wilderness to the fringes of the city, as its devastation slowly pours outward into the Earth.

We are gearing up for some interesting stuff in the not too distant future, so keep your eyes and ears attached to your head and brain please.

So long and thanks for everything you internet crêpes,
Quentin Uderick Iain Phong

UPCOMING RELEASES

This is all in the typography. Not super-advanced or anything, I just think it works pretty well.
Polypsuethröt
(2xLP/CD)

1. Polypticon (17:14)
2. A Garden of Ogre’s Teeth (21:50)
3. An Assemblage of Bog Oak (13:32)
4. Uethröpticon (14:29)

Here at Mongolbord Surfingturd, we have been working alongside members of Polyps for a long time, in one capacity or another. Until now however, we have not had the opportunity to work directly with the Saskatchawan ensemble as a whole. Their uniquely mythic take on heavy experimental sound textures have been a staple of the office subwoofer chamber since the earliest days of the label.

Uethröt was formed last year by Mana Gunray Serpentine veteran Ivan Islar Ilasko and Saul Tillerman, and they delivered us a disc of bleeding-edge glitchtronics, whatever that’s supposed to mean.

So you can understand how excited we are about this brand new fully-collaborative effort featuring the combined membership of Polyps and Uethröt, alongside a host of special guests including prepared guitarist Lisa Salomon and experimental percussionists Leonard McMorrow and Quentin Uderik Iain Phong (that's me!).

Together this baffling assortment of musicians have blended the worlds of electronic abstraction and doom-laden metal into a dense sub-sonic fabric of dark dream-like psychedelia, ritual drones, jazz and freak-out noise dirges. Contrast is the main theme of this record, dynamic range and scope. Polyps manage to stay true to their unique gnostic vision while the Uethröt influence pulls the music outward in wholly unexpected directions. The resulting recorded document is a full spectrum assault of mystical, hallucinogenic joy and wonder. Breathe deep, drop out and weep smoke.

Deluxe gatefold 2LP with compositional notes and ciphers. First 200 copies of the vinyl are midnight grey with white swirl and red fleck, followed by 200 in translucent red, and the remainder in matte red. Also available on gatefold CD and digital. Download code with all physical orders.

Blue=cold. Clever huh? The benefits of a primary school education.
Wooddoom - Cold
(12" EP/CD)

1. Rats Carry the Plague to the Altar (12:03)
2. A Dysphoric Mimosa (4:18)
3. Crushed by the Snow of a Thousand Winters (8:48)

Not content with releasing their first album last year, the family Lenoire returns with a new Wooddoom EP, made up of material recorded upon the couple’s return to their home in Quebec after their stint in the Alaskan countryside. The tone is similar, but there's an aspect of urbanism leaking into proceedings here. A subtle industrial influence sees this new work drawing from a slightly different well, while still remaining firmly of the earth.

The first track is an extension of a piece from their earlier incarnation The Amphibious Unity Choir and Eight-Hundred Salamanders Handclap Band. The remaining tracks see Wooddoom moving in a more overtly composed direction, with passages reminiscent of Temple Lantern Caravel’s more melancholic moments. There's a greater sense of emotional maturity at work, but make no mistake, this still comes from that dark place in the human psyche.

12" EP single-sleeve in greyous grey only. Also available on CD and digital. Download code with all physical orders.
