Artist: Weekend Title: Out Of My Mind Genre: R&B Length: 4:02 Written By: D.Blue, R.Hamilton, P.Hynes, B.Khan Produced By: Oracle Label: Chaos Records/ Five Pesky Kids Records From The Album: Wild Young Free 'Out Of My Mind' is Weekend's sixth overall single and the leading single from their forthcoming sophomore album 'Wild Young Free'. It was written by three of the band's members; Billy Khan, Dustyn Blue and Riley Hamilton alongside Perry Hynes, a songwriter who is managed by Weekend's Five Pesky Kids label. The four minute, two second long clip was produced by Oracle, marking the group's first foray into a heavier R&B sound. The track doesn't just begin, it explodes with the deep thudding of drums and a blaring of deep male voices chanting 'whoa oh oh' in numerous different variations. This already makes it extremely different from any other Weekend tracks as it is very brash and the vocals seem to be very 'full' and pronounced. As the loud chanting fades, the track begins to relax into a more R&B/Urban sound whilst still remaining mid-tempo. The verses seem to focus more on the matured vocals of the members rather than the actual backing track which is quite low and the only major feature that really stands out is the constant repetition of two piano keys one after the other however it is not irritating. In fact, it comes across as rather soothing and contrasts nicely against the voices of the first two singers; Oscar and Dustyn, who are known for their throaty, rough vocals. The pre-choruses feature also feature Oscar and in between his lines, the group chant the "whoa's" again only they don't pack as much punch as they aren't accompanied by the triumphant sound of the drums. The choruses are probably just as spectacular (if not more than) the intro. All the boys come together and harmonise perfectly, becoming one beautiful voice, pouring it's heart and soul into the emotional performance whilst fighting against the attention seeking drumming. The chorus and the chanting of 'whoa' has a sense of empowerment and achievement about it and it wouldn't sound out of place being played as someone wins an Olympic gold medal or at the World Cup Finals as it is very dramatic and powerful. Riley sings the next verse and manages to stay at the same level as the first two verses, remaining quite low which is surprising as Riley is known for his high harmonies and for sometimes coming across as a bit nasally. In the bridge, Billy surprises with his tamed and emotion filled vocals. Usually known for being loud and for shouting more than singing, Billy proves everyone wrong and shows that he can have a much gentler, passionate voice and it's clear that it's been tamed too. Also, Billy is given the high note (usually give to either Oscar or Dustyn) and he pulls it off like a professional. As he belts out the long, high note the powerful drumming and strong chanting leap out of nowhere and take the reigns of the song once again and it is followed by the chorus (which is repeated twice). However, on the last repetition, the playing of the drums stops before the sing the last line. All five boys come together to harmonise on the last line - Riley's high harmonising is prominent here. The song then fades out with a beautiful yet erratic tinkering of the piano. Band CommentsBillyQuote:"This is by far my favourite track that we have recorded as a band. I'm a huge R&B fan and I love being unpredictable and surprising fans and this track is just the very definition of those things. 'Out Of My Mind' is very easy on the ears once you listen to it for a second or third time and the song itself is nothing too 'out there' but for a boy band who usually do upbeat pop and dance songs about girls and having fun and what not, this song is very different. It's been a while since we released something and we wanted to come back with a track that shows we've grown but also isn't very in your face which can be off putting. We've recorded so many tracks that show our growth as artists but this one does it best as not only are there amazing harmonies, solos and a showcase of how mature we've got vocally, but it was also written by Riley, Dustyn and I which gives it the Weekend stamp and lyrically, you can tell it's a Weekend song. We wouldn't come back with something that wasn't us because our fans would know straight away. I'm super excited for this release and hopefully, the fans will enjoy this different sound." DustynQuote:"YAY!!! I is super excited and nervous!! This song isn't a pop record which we normally do. This one is more...grown up and appeals to more people cos not everyone likes to jump around singing our other hits cos they might think that pop is 'cheesy' so we has decided to make a song which will attract more listeners. I helped do writing and it was actually mine and Riley's idea and we telled the boys and they liked it so Billy decided to do helping with the writing and we also brought in one of our writers from our label. Is I talking too much? Anyway, I love how mature I sound on it and I can pretend I is a big, mature boy but in real life I isn't tehehe....I is still Dusty! The boys say we is more maturer now but I don'ts understand it cos I still feel the same, Scott still plays practical jokes and Billy still does farting all the time so we hasn't changed.....I don'ts understand. My head hurts. BYE!! Enjoy the song and if you don't then I'll be sad and do crying but that's OK cos I is used to crying! Plus Blakey will comfort me and I love Blakey cuddles!" OscarQuote:"I adore this song and I could kiss the other guys for creating such a wonderful track. I like to call the sound of it, 'Coldplay meets Emeli Sandé' because the 'woah, oh, oh' section and the dramatic drums heard in the chorus remind me of something Coldplay would do and the whole song is tinged with a mid-tempo R&B flavour filled with a lot of emotion like an Emeli Sandé track. I sound like a bloody reviewer here! I'm not meaning to try to compare ourselves with these huge artists, I'm just so passionate and excited about this single, forgive me. Another thing I love about the track is the harmonies. We seem to blend together so well and it's a huge difference to the songs on our first album were there was very little harmonising. I can't wait to perform it live and come together as one to really nail the performance. It's been a long time coming and we hope everyone, well the majority of people are pleased with this track. We know that we can't please everyone and we know we're going to get criticism, we're used to it by now. The boys and I love 'Out Of My Mind' and at the end of the day, we're happy with our work and proud of ourselves even if the track isn't well received." RileyQuote:"It feels wonderful to be back and to come back with a mid-tempo single may seem a little risky but we believe in the song and we have strong belief that our Weekenders will stand by 'Out Of My Mind' and support the single. I will admit that it's not a track you will instantly fall in love with, I found it as a bit of a grower but now I can't stop listening to it and I can't wait to unleash it on the world. Honestly, when I first heard the final version I thought it was very flat and didn't really go anywhere but once I finally got into it, I got hooked and I mean HOOKED. I can't stop! I'm not one for listening to compliments or for 'blowing my own trumpet' because I always fee like I'm being arrogant and big headed but I can honestly say that I'm proud of myself of the boys. I think this is our best song yet and it also gives me joy when I think that this is the single with the most work input from the band. Three of us wrote it and came up with the melody and it just feels like our little baby." ScottQuote:"I'm really excited to see how people react to this song. When we first heard the final version, even our opinions were split. We all agreed that it was a brilliant track but whether or not it could qualify as a 'Weekend' track....we were unsure. However, we've took the risk and we're going full steam ahead with its release and I must say that even if it doesn't please everyone then I'll still be proud because we tried and we broke away from the typical boy band sound and went with something a little edgier. Although I don't get a solo, I still can't wait to perform it live because the chorus is so big and dramatic and I can only imagine what the atmosphere will be like when us boys get together, the chorus kicks in and the audience get behind us...it will be epic and I think there's no better way to kick off a new era with such a standout track." Getting so confused, at first you said you want me Then you find a stranger and suddenly get all flirty I'm starting to think that this was all a huge mistake I just want to go back and start off with a clean slate Maybe I'm just feeling a little paranoid Or maybe it's because our love is null and voidI don't want this to end and I don't wanna pretend Why can't we talk this ou-oh-out?Whoa-oh-oh, whoa-oh-oh, oh-uh-ohFeels like we aren't even friends, it's getting colder in bed Why do you shut me ou-ou out?oh-oh-oh, whoa-oh-oh, oh-uh-oh'Stay strong', how can I when there's nothing left to hold on?
