BUZZ & HYPE: THE PAST, THE PRESENT, THE FUTURE

FACT Magazine welcome Buzz & Hype, one of the world’s biggest Electronic music artists, to come in and chat about everything Buzz & Hype! They’re going to be talking about the past, the present and most importantly – the future! Everybody in the world has heard a Buzz & Hype song and whether you like them or not, you can NOT say they haven’t been successful. With a number one album to their name plus 5 number one singles, the duo certainly took the world by storm in 2011 and 2012. But here we are in 2013, with something new and incredibly different to what we have come to expect from the duo, can they add to their list?!

So, Welcome to FACT! How have you both been? It’s been a long time since the two of you have been interviewed properly! You need to fill us in on the gossip!
Buzz: Well, we’ve had a busy year or so – after we dropped the album, we toured like mad. Did the whole world! Think we visited all 25 countries in the world!
Hype: Bret…. There are more than that…
Buzz: More what?
Hype: Countries… There are more than 25 countries in the world…
Buzz: Whatever… But yeah – after we finished touring we figured we’d set up base in Ibiza. Un-Freaking-Believable.
Hype: He’s not wrong – that place is a totally different world. I had never actually been out there before, but when we first touched down I knew this was where I was meant to be.
Buzz: Like wow. It was just the best thing to have ever happened to me. I mean number one albums and singles are awesome, but to be able to DJ to thousands of people every night – that is my dream.

Sounds fairly amazing!! Let’s have a quick chat about the past then – to refresh our readers’ memories, you hit the scene fairly hard back in 2011 with your Buzzing/Hyped Up EP. What was the motive behind that EP and how did that lead you into Fast and Furious?
Hype: Well it was basically us just putting some bits together and them coming to sound awesome! We had no idea that Buzzing would go on to sell something crazy like 2 million copies worldwide – isn’t that awesome! That was out first number 1, and to this day my favourite song of ours. I mean we’ve written better songs, but that’s my favourite.
Buzz: Yeah that’s right, we just put some bits together, put Buzzing out there and sent it to a few radio stations etc, and before we knew it the world had started to fall at our feet! We released Hyped Up, which still went on to sell over half a million copies, but at that point we really felt as though we had been a one hit wonder.
Hype: How wrong that feeling appeared to be! After B/HU, we focussed better and worked harder, and wrote the next EP. We still had Rage working with us at this point; he was doing a lot of work as a session rapper and really helping us with writing lyrics and then performing them himself. Absolute legend.
Buzz: F&F really pushed us up to the next level. F*cked was such a great track, and we can’t thank PostScript enough for getting on it with us and doing it, but without Stephanie Fierce’s original song we wouldn’t have had anything to work from. When she came and met us to do a club session with us, that was incredible too. The one and only fully live performance of that song that has or will ever happen!

Yes, that does sound fairly awesome! Obviously you guys have sold 10’s of millions of records, how did it feel to see Time Will Tell hit number one? And for every single one of the singles to hit the top spot too?
Hype: Without a shadow of a doubt, when TWT went to number one, that was the most fulfilling feeling I have ever felt. To know that the piece that we had nurtured and helped to grow was finally finished and out there and hundreds of thousands of people were out there buying it, that was immensely satisfying.

So, now we’ve talked about the past. What is this new record then? Obviously the artwork is………. Different? Is that the right word? Something very dark and twisted, which I suppose fits with the EP. What brought this on?
Buzz: Well we felt like, okay we’ve earned millions from making generic pop songs and twisting them with other genres, and the only genre we hadn’t dabbled in was like post-hardcore screamo. So naturally, we just jumped in and decided we’d pull together a whole EP of it. Obviously we wanted to find a sound that was distinctive, and the obvious choice was Scott Rose-Hilton.
Hype: Who else could we have seriously chosen? The man is a living legend, and he was surprisingly easy to work with. He has such amazing ideas, and it truly was an amazing experience to not only be able to write with him, but to just work and develop something with him. We want to thank him thoroughly!
Buzz: Obviously, because Screamo is such a niche market really, we’re not expecting to hit the dizzying heights of the TWT days, although I’m not saying it wouldn’t be nice!

Wow! Scott Rose-Hilton! Impressive stuff! So is this more metallic sound the direction you’ll be heading in from now onwards then? Because if I’m perfectly honest, I’d much rather hear more Love Sick’s and Dem Man’s. As much as Screams in the Dark is awesome, I preferred all of your older stuff!
Hype: Don’t worry; this was only a onetime thing. I mean, if it all goes amazingly, we might do some further work with Scott further down the line on like a side project or something – but the plan is to go back to what we do best – releasing shit loads of music that everyone in the world is going to be sick of hearing our names but still wants to buy it!
Buzz: Word.

Fantastic! Well thank you very much for coming in Buzz & Hype! We really appreciate you coming to see us and filling us in!! And we look forward to seeing you soon!!

Screams in the Dark, the single is out now to download on iTunes and Amazon. Screams in the Dark, the EP is out now to download in iTunes and Amazon, and available to buy a physical copy of in selected stores or online through the likes of Amazon and Play.com.
