GENRE: Industrial Metal, Extreme Metal LABEL: 50 Shades of Zander Gray (Independently Released) PRODUCER: Trent D'Amour and Zander Gray Quote:“Imagine being sentient but not alive. Seeing and even knowing, but not alive. Just looking out. Recognizing but not being alive. A person can die and still go on. Sometimes what looks out at you from a person's eyes maybe died back in childhood.” - Philip K. Dick, A Scanner Darkly This is the quote that is included in the booklet that comes with the CD copy of ZTO's debut single, 'Destroyer.' Limited to 500, hand-numbered copies, the mini-CD which includes only a single song, lasting roughly two minutes. If you were to confront the members of ZTO about their decision, they would only laugh. "It's for collectors. If you like Zander Gray and you like Shadowmachine, and you're crazy enough about them to pay 25$ for a single two minute song, then this is the release for you," says Zander, half of the duo that is ZTO. "It's already leaked onto the internet anyway, it's not like we're depriving people of the music. The single release is just a nice thing to have, and it's an introduction to our vast, currently unreleased body of work," says Trent D'Amour, front man of Shadowmachine and the other half of ZTO. But when asked about the meaning of the quote, the song, or even about the title of their upcoming album, they just shake their heads. "That'll come later. For now, listen to the song, and think for yourself. That's all," was the only answer we could get out of Zander before he and Trent ended the interview. THE SONGThe song merges the styles of Zander Gray's atmospheric, almost ambient sounding metal sound with Shadowmachine's industrial quirks and synthesized, layered arrangements. The song is based around heavy guitar riffs, fast drumming, and menacing synthesizers, with Zander and Trent's voices merging to create ear-shattering, inhuman sounding screams and growls. The drums, which are recorded using drum programming software, are blisteringly fast and sound unable to be played by any human being, and as usual with Zander and Trent's work, all of the tracks are layered many times, creating a jumble of noise and a heavy wall of sound that can be disorienting. The song is short, vicious, and unsatisfying, as it builds to a climax that abruptly cuts off, leaving the listener thirsting for more.
