TITLE: Scar
GENRE: Industrial, EBM, Electronica
LABEL: 50 Shades of Gray (Independent)
PRODUCER: Trent D'Amour and Zander Gray

A couple weeks ago ZTO made their musical debut with the release of 'Destroyer,' the duo's first single. So far, the release has been the only song available to people who wanted to hear a Shadowmachine/Zander Gray collaboration, and it did not disappoint, with a crushing industrial backing competing with death metal riffs and frantic synthesizers. The suprising thing is the drastic difference between 'Destroyer' and the new single 'Scar.' Trent D'Amour explained the dichotomy between the two songs, and also elaborated on the forthcoming album:
Quote:
"Well basically the concept of the album is that there will be two sides, or cycles, and that one will be entitled 'Manic' and the other 'Depressive.' You can probably guess how the music on both sides are going to vary. Both Zander and I will have equal creative input, but the Manic side will be mostly Zander driven and the Depressive side will be mostly coming from me, although the songwriting process is basically a 50/50 split. This new single, 'Scar,' is going to be on the depressive side. 'Destroyer' is going to be on the manic side. We've also been kicking around the idea of doing a cover, but we're not sure of which song. Oh yeah, and the album is going to be called REHAB. Clever, huh?"

'Scar' does differ extremely from 'Destroyer,' the latter being an industrial death metal song, the former being a danceable, albeit dark, industrial/electronica song. The entire song is based on a multi-layered industrial beat that winds and fades in and out constantly, creating a feeling of discomfort and disorientation, with a fuzzy electronic bassline that pounds steadily beneath the pulsing beat. The entire song is accentuated by sparse sections of frenetic guitarwork from Gray that drive the harder-hitting parts of the song. The song ends with a lengthy coda, featuring Trent chanting the lyrics as the song fades out.

the scar is deep and the worms are inside
the scar is a place my addictions hide
the scar is bleeding, the scar is wet
the scar's from a wound i've not felt yet
the scar is growing, the scar is cold
the scar is spreading as i get old

what you've seen, what you believe
your scars are bleeding, our scars are bleeding
the pain inside, the pain you hide
are scars that are bleeding, your scars are bleeding

i feel like nothing, i feel so hot
i feel like something i know i'm not
i'm breathing heavy, my palms are wet
i'm killing myself with no regrets

what you've seen, what you believe
you self deceive, you self deceive
the pain inside, the pain you hide
is bleeding from your wounded sides

your scars are bleeding, our scars are bleeding
your scars are bleeding, our scars are bleeding
your scars are bleeding, our scars are bleeding
your scars are bleeding, our scars are bleeding

this pain won't stop, this scar's still bleeding
this pain won't stop, this scar's still bleeding
this pain won't stop, this scar's still bleeding
this pain won't stop, this scar's still bleeding

Zander: I don't know why, but that statement sounds amazingly dirty despite being innocent. I guess I just have a dirty mind.

Mariko: i think it is the word "soaked". It just sounds dirty when free range like that. It definitely needs a specific liquid suffix. "Soaked with bathwater." See? Completely clean, now.
