No Regrets Johnny's Recording Diary Entry #1 It's hard to believe that it's been almost a year since we did what we thought would be our last album together. Well, some habits do die hard, and it's harder not to look back sometimes. Because you say to yourself "Damn! We sure had fun together and played some killer tunes!" It was something I guess we all sort of collectively missed as a group. That comradery of touring together, playing music, writing music, and just generally being in the company of each other. We had been together since high school so it felt like a forced separation really when we decided to split up for a time.
I got a call from Joe Monroe. My good buddy and best friend next to Erich Hess. We talked for a while and decided that it was time to think about playing together again. Though I still respect his decision to leave due to the fact that he does have a kid and wants to be a dad. If that issue comes up again there will be no problems letting him leave. It's the responsible thing. So there may be a replacement for him if need me. I honestly hope it doesn't come to that though. Joe and I are a very cohesive unit. We are peanut butter and jelly so to speak. But the overall issue is that Joe very much wanted to play again. So we met up at the old homestead in my basement studio.
After a few drinks, manly hugs and handshakes, some crying (don't judge), and some general carousing it was agreed upon to get to making music again. We all agreed that we were feeling jaded effect of not being young any more. Though we still felt young. Which is basically where the album and it's content started taking shape. Regrets, revelry, wondering about old friends (some who departed from this world too soon), old girlfriends, and all that stuff that comes with getting closer to 30 years of age. Realizing that life may feel like it's going downhill. But it's really not. It's a matter of interpretation. We liked RITB's youthful rebellion of Wild Young Things and decided to give it a nice scrotum wrenching twist. Getting older, feeling jaded, but still pretty damn happy despite. Do I like the album though? Hell yes! This is album is not a jab at them but just taking a look at things from another perspective. I'd rather hope they're flattered really. We had no idea what the fuck we were going write music about. I just had a title and nothing much to go on. We were going to make it another concept album but said fuck it, we did that. Let's wait until we get into the swing of things to make a mind fuck album again. Luckily sometimes you get sparks from other artists. After we realized we could provide a nice twist because we were all dealing with aging it pretty much started rolling. This is the result of all that. Hard work was of course put in and we are happy with the outcome. Even moreso that we're back together again. It's a bittersweet kind of thing. OOC: I'll have track one up soon. Never really went through with an undertaking like this. So stay with me here folks. I'm better at writing when I don't have to compose really. Having to think all this through will take some time. The Untitled Anthem There are nights when I think that I was right I can tour American but still I feel so sad and lonely. I must be going through all the motions, trying to keep myself straight. I'm crushed with my own expectations. But I'm too dependent, undisciplined, and I liked to sleep late.
I was a really cool kisser and I wasn't all that strict of a Christian I'm not a good dancer but I wasn't all that great of a boyfriend I like the warm feeling of a night's drunk but I'm tired of the morning hangover Most nights are crystal clear but I still can't hear any of my songs
On the radio
The Devil and I, We took a walk together We ended up in Ohio talking to the river I said, "I've surrounded myself with media darlings and all the right people Their big heads and soft bodies make for lousy lovers"
There was that night that I thought I could fly But I couldn't, So I died. I wanted to poetic with my words. But they didn't get me anywhere. So I died.
Yeah, I was drunk and exhausted, I wanted to be critically acclaimed and respected I loved West Virginia but I hated all the drawn-out winters I love the night's drunks but I still hate the morning hangovers I live my nights all blurry when I just want to have total retention
Yeah, these whiskey soaked kisses. They made less hits and more misses. I just want to drown in it.
We drink and we dry up and now we crumble into dust We get wet and we corrode and now we're covered up in rust We drink and we dry up and now we crumble into dust We get wet and we corrode and now we're covered up in rust

Johnny's Studio Blog Entry #2 I love a good anthem really. Especially when it's jumped up and happy sound. But the overall lyrical content is actually depressing. There's something about a happy song about being miserable. This song covers my overdose a few years back and how I was feeling at the time.
I was horribly depressed and in a relationship that was going nowhere. Spending my nights in drunken hazes and wondering why the hell I wasn't famous like I wanted to be. I was not happy with my situation which in hindsight I think contributed to the impending break up with the band. I felt like I'd tried to surround myself with all the right people to get in the right spots. But it just didn't work out. So one night while drinking heavily I decided to add heroin to the mix. In the hopes that would it kill me off. But as you can see it didn't.
This is what this song is about really. My feelings at the time and where they were taking me. I love the intro with the hooky guitar loop and how the piano really drives the song forward instead. The rocking amped up guitars just throw on another layer and it makes for a delicious rocking anthem. It sounds like a Springsteen rock ballad. That honestly wasn't what I was going for. This is definitely my favorite song on the anthem. The bassline and piano really providing the substance for the song in place of the guitar which is what I usually rely on. Instead they just provide a rhythm with the piano doing the work. When they do come in they really blow your face off. I'm still a fan of distortion and left the feedback at the end. For some reason I just love the humming of an amp. It gives me goosebumps. I'm proud of this song. Even though it's content is overall pretty dark and really exorcises some demons. But music is therapeutic that way. Sounds Like:
