If you ask anybody about Allison Cooper , most will say , " Who ? " some will say , " You mean Alice Cooper ? " and others just might look at you funny and timidly say , " That crazy girl ? Yea I've heard about her ... " . Allison hasn't did anything in the business other than just lately being listed as the main character of new TV show , ' Consequences ' , yet she still has a little buzz and an " unintentional stratagem " that gives her lots of potential to capture many hearts .
She never necessarily " became famous " , but was introduced to the business by Zane Anoshkin ( Zayne ; inZane ) . Zayne and Allison were once roommates . He stayed with her in a big apartment when he moved to America and flew back and forth from San Francisco and London to see his parents . When Zane finished Electric Summer Tour , he had already moved out of the apartment with Allison , but didn't forget about her . He came back to her apartment and asked her if she'd like to become a singer and Allison shrugged and said , " Sure . Why not ? " . Now here she is with her debut single , ' Cigarette ' , ready to prove to us all if she'll be able to take this chance and run with it or be one of those singers who we throw a lot of buzz at and put hope into until it's apparent they are incompetent .
The original plan was for her was to release ' Vendetta ' as her debut single , but since it was picked up as a soundtrack for the future HBO series she will star on , ' Consequences ' , Allison and Zane thought it was best to just save it for the show . One of the main reasons ' Cigarette ' was picked in it's place was because of it's soft , dream pop sound . Allison has never really specified her main genre , but did say while commenting about the single that her sound was usually a little more something she calls , " indie oppressive " . We essentially think that she means a little more indie rock since the single is indie pop , but only future music will tell .
While ( based on the snippet we heard in the sneak peek of ' Consequences ' ) ' Vendetta ' maintained most likely a more serious , " psychotic " theme that she most likely wrote from what she went through as a child and her darkest wishes , ' Cigarette ' is a lighthearted song about something we all can relate to now and then ; a one-sided love . Throughout the song she compares it to a cigarette , which in her eyes is a drug that doesn't taste good , smell good or get you high , yet you can get so hooked to it that you'll disregard all the warnings that are given and risk your life for a " benefit-less " drug . The ultimate question is " What is it about this cigarette ? " , which you know already know the answer to , but most importantly , " Why ? " . According to her lyrics , this goes hand in hand with being in a one-sided love . The other person will never love you back , which makes it benefit-less , but yet you'll spend all your life dreaming about having that person to yourself and how it would feel if they loved you back until you simply die alone .
The song about the metaphor of the cigarette and the person she talks about in this song is beautifully written and the vocals and music of ' Cigarette ' puts the cherry on top . Allison Cooper's voice is very similar to Yasmine Kiambang's , which is known for it's monophonic , yet angelic , tone . Allison's has a little more of a higher pitched one than the one Yasmine uses in songs like , ' Proposition ' and ' Bless Me ' but you can still hear the correspondence between the two . The song's music is very tranquil and composed . It is mostly made up of many synthesizers and accompanied by most likely the playing of a keyboard and light strums of an acoustic guitar . The whole song really does give off that " daydream " type of vibe when listening to it which goes well with the theme of the song . inZane is known for composing such music that creates a strong foundation for the lyrics to build a house upon .
' Cigarette ' starts of with a brief introduction that could be something you hear when you think of the sound stars make when twinkling one after another . That's when the keyboard then begins to play and after a few seconds , Allison starts the first verse .She drags the words at the end of each line , which explains why there are so little lyrics in the verse . | You aren't | Forbidden but you should be | 'Cause yet I'm | Addicted to you , I don't know why ... | How ? | She starts off by explaining how this " cigarette " isn't illegal , but should be because of her helpless addiction to it . She then asks herself how this is possible . This trails perfectly into the chorus of the song as she sings , | Well all you do is make it hard for my oxygen ... | With no benefits | It seems that you've got me hooked but I don't know ... | Exactly what it is | Blowing out clouds of smoke | I'm all alone | Why ? | Why am I still smoking this cigarette ? | She starts off by putting a sort of pun on the first line as she compares that person taking her breath away to the trouble the cigarettes causes for the lungs when smoked . In the second line she points out how he doesn't love her , comparing it to the cigarette being a " benefit-less " drug . She continues that in the third and fourth line saying she doesn't know what about that person that has her so addicted , when " factually " , she does . Just like how " factually " we all know that the tobacco in a cigarette creates an addiction for people , she knows why she likes him , which kind of defeats her whole question . In the rest of the chorus the question becomes clearer as she then talks about dreaming about him and then shines light on how she's not just asking herself how this is , but why .
After the first verse and chorus , she then moves on to singing the second verse of the song . During the transition of it , the music doesn't change much from the chorus , making the second verse seem a little more " upbeat " than the first . The structure of the second verse is still very similar , well actually the same as the first verse , with very limited lyrics but only because Allison drags the end of the lyrics of each line . The comparisons of this person and a cigarette continues in the second verse as well . She starts off with | You are toxic | But your words look so damn pure | saying that every time she thinks about him , she wastes more precious time of her life that she would one day wish she could get back , yet those thoughts always seem right to her and they lour her in just for one more try , | So I wrap my lips around once more | Just to find out what it is ... | The cigarette comparison to these lyrics are a little more poetic as she calls what's on the inside of the cigarette toxic but looks so pure because the paper is white . That's when once again the verse ends and she trails into the chorus right away .
Once it is over , the whole tranquil beat changes and turns into a composition that almost sounds like she is being lifted up into cloud while she sings about ' fading away ' in the bridge , which is really her wanting think of him more and more , which she wastes her life on . | Fill up my lungs , love ... | I'm fading , I'm fading | Away ... | Just taking , a hit of you ... | . Allison does runs with her voice to match the " rising " feeling the music gives off as she sings these lyrics . Afterwards she vocalizes , doing repeated riffs until once again she sings the chorus . The music goes back to the original music for the chorus as she sings it and repeats the chorus once . When she sings the chorus for the last time , the instruments take their time to play out and fade away as Allison ends the song with another simple , | Why ? | .
[Verse 1] You aren't Forbidden but you should be 'Cause yet I'm Addicted to you , I don't know why ... How ?
[Chorus] Well all you do is make it hard for my oxygen ... With no benefits It seems that you've got me hooked but I don't know ... Exactly what it is Blowing out clouds of smoke I'm all alone Why ? Why am I still smoking this cigarette ?
[Verse 2] You are toxic But your words look so damn pure So I wrap my lips around once more Just to find out what it is ...
[Chorus] But all you do is make it hard for my oxygen ... With no benefits It seems that you've got me hooked but I don't know ... Exactly what it is Blowing out clouds of smoke I'm all alone Why ? Why am I still smoking this cigarette ?
[Bridge] Fill up my lungs , love ... I'm fading , I'm fading Away ... Just taking , a hit of you ... Oh ... Oh .... Ooh ....
[Chorus] 'Cause all you do is make it hard for my oxygen ... With no benefits It seems that you've got me hooked but I don't know ... Exactly what it is Blowing out clouds of smoke I'm all alone Why ? Why am I still smoking this cigarette ?
All you do is make it hard for my oxygen ... With no benefits It seems that you've got me hooked but I don't know ... Exactly what it is Blowing out clouds of smoke I'm all alone Why ? Why am I still smoking this cigarette ?
