Title/Length: Bordeaux (3:17) Genre: Hip-Hop Recorded: 2013 Label: Live Nation Released: October 20th, 2013 Format: Digital Download Writer(s): Sonyae Maraj, Timbaland Producer: Timbaland"Bordeaux" is a promotional single off of Trinidadian-born, American rapper-songwriter Sonyae. The song was written solely by Sonyae Maraj and was composed and produced by Timbaland. The song was recorded at Glenwood Place Studios in Burbank, California in September 2013. Although only released for promotional purposes, "Bordeaux" will be included on Sonyae's debut studio album titled "The Pinkprint". However, according to Sonyae's publicist, no music video will be treated for "Bordeaux". The song wasn't originally intended to be included on Sonyae's debut studio album but due to high favoritism by music critics and fans, Sonyae and her management came to a decision to include the song on the album's track-listing which will be revealed to the GA (general audience) and Sonyae's fans nicknamed 'Barbz', on her official website in November 2013. The album is scheduled to be released in the US, Canada, UK, and Europe on December 3rd, 2013; while the worldwide release date is on December 10th.
Upon release, "Bordeaux" has been receiving positive reviews from music critics with some critics labeling the song as one of the hip-hop highlights of 2013 thus far - despite only a few hip-hop releases this year. "It's a fresh sound and Sonyae delivers tough rhymes. She just may go down in the books as one of hip-hop's greatest emcees if she continues down this route," wrote Kitty Empire of The Guardian. Another critic, Colin McGuire of PopMatters gave the song a positive review stating that the song is proves that Sonyae has great lyricism and "has an extraordinary quality of world play like none other."Billboard Review "Without a doubt, rapper Sonyae is rampaging through the heart hip-hop/rap and urban community. With the release of the first promotional single off of her debut studio album "The Pinkprint" comes "Bordeaux"; a hip-hop song that'll keep you jamming and bumping and grinding. The world can only wonder why Sonyae didn't release this as an official lead single rather than only a promotional release. The song's production is killer and along with it's lyrics. Lyric-wise, the song takes a jab at other rappers who promote the use of the ecstasy drug 'molly' as she degrades that form of promotion in lines such as "I don't pop molly I pop open my bordeaux. Show respect where it's due, but none for these buffoons." Sonyae is implying that she's too high class to be using any form of drug. Nonetheless, "Bordeaux" is a phenomenal hip-hop song and if Sonyae continues down on this route, she'll definitely have the hip-hop community at her feet."
Vibe Review
With the release of her promotional single "Bordeaux", Sonyae is proving to the world that although she portrays many different images that range from being a barbie, to her many different alter-egos that includes Scott Zolanski, she's still can spit fantastic raps. Her word play is definitely up there in the ranks with this song and her lyricism lets us know that she indeed can become not only one of hip-hop's greatest emcees, but one of hip-hop's greatest emcees in general. For years and years, there haven't hardly been any female rappers making it big in the industry. And the few who have, only had a short-lived career. Only just recently have female rappers began to emerge in the industry and Sonyae is one of the few who are on that train. Even male rappers have been quite these past few years with only Kid Amaze being the latest male rapper who started making waves. The morale of the story is that if Sonyae continues down this lane, she'll definitely earn her credibility as a female rapper in the industry. If her promotional single sounds this good, the world can only imagine how good her official lead single off of her debut album will sound and how good the other songs that she has to offer will sound as well."
