"Live To Tell" is a song written and recorded by English singer/songwriter, Michelle Green. It was written solely by Green in late 2012, with the intention to put it forward for her then untitled third studio album. At the time of writing the ballad, Michelle had no idea just how important the track would become and never imagined that it would be dubbed by many as 'her best song yet'.
"I remember sitting at home, stressing myself out because I set myself a target earlier that day and that target was to get at least three songs done or even write a few decent chunks. I had been slacking for a while and it all came back to bite me as the deadline suddenly seemed a lot closer. I had nothing written that night and it wasn't until I was in bed before the ideas came flooding in. Riley wasn't home that night so I just relaxed and had some 'me time' where I reflected on things and thought about my past. I pulled out an old diary of mine and reading it back really shocked me. It was very dark and negative, most of it was written when I felt suicidal so it wasn't very pretty I must say. I compared what my life is like now to what it was like at the time of writing the diary. It was like two totally different girls. One was very fragile, easily mislead and naive whilst the other was now happy, confident and a lot stronger. I realised that no matter how hard life gets, you should never contemplate about ending it. Us humans are a lot tougher than we think and even looking back on your own life right now, I guarantee you that you'll remember really sad times but you still lived to tell. There's always a light at the end of the tunnel."The single is the closing track on the album of the same name and is the fourth and final single from the record. It serves as the third Japanese single as 'Explode' has not been released in that territory yet. With this album, Michelle has experienced more success than she ever imagined as 'Live To Tell' became her second number one album and the singles; 'Break The Dawn', 'Explode' and 'Leave The Light On' all became massive top ten hits around the globe. Being away for over a year and staying out of the public eye usually causes people to grow tired of waiting and ultimately, they'll just not care anymore but Michelle's amazing comeback is an exception to that rule. Hoping to continue that success, Michelle has chosen to release 'Live To Tell' as the next single after huge demand from fans and the overwhelming positive critical response. Michelle has also stated that it is the 'perfect way' to end this era as the song is her personal favourite and sums up the album as a whole.
The single is available to purchase on CD and via digital download as of today. A video directed by KT Auleta has already been filmed for the emotional ballad and is set to be released next week. As Michelle has only recently given birth to her first child, Orson Hamilton, promotion for the song will mainly be done via social networking sites as Green is now taking time out to look after her son.
I used to hate the playground, always tripped up - face down
I never had a helping hand, always picked myself off the ground
I lived to tell
'Miss' never ever understood, I played alone so misunderstood
They'd see how far they could push, never spoke though I know I should
But I lived to tell
Started to grow and have curves, hid it from all the other girls
Tried to ignore all the words that they hurled, I felt so alone in this world
I lived to tell
Everybody hung with their friends, whilst my only ones were all in my head
It's all OK if I just pretend but deep down I wanted it to end
But I lived to tell
After all I've seen in this world, after all I've endured
Nothing hurts me anymore, gonna raise my shield and sword
You can throw what you like, I'll just spread my wings and glide
Thank you for all the bruises, I've learned how to take a knock
Held down for long enough, not I'm heading for the top
Hit rock bottom, dragged through hell, you can do what you like, I'll live to tellI put my trust in the adults around me; fifteen, signed, so young and naive
Suddenly I'm struggling to breathe, I felt cold hands all over me
I lived to tell
Afraid to say all the things that he had done, still so fragile and young
I hated what my own body had become, he'd punish me the more times I tried to run
But I lived to tell
Fell right down in the middle of the street, woke in a big white room feeling so weak
The news spilled and I started to freak, out of everyone why did it have to be me?
I lived to tell
They said I was lucky to survive but at the time, I couldn't care 'bout my life
I cried myself to sleep at night, I was so battered, worn, what was the point in being alive?
But I lived to tell
After all I've seen in this world, after all I've endured
Nothing hurts me anymore, gonna raise my shield and sword
You can throw what you like, I'll just spread my wings and glide
Thank you for all the bruises, I've learned how to take a knock
Held down for long enough, not I'm heading for the top
Hit rock bottom, dragged through hell, you can do what you like, I'll live to tellI was 'too young' to go into town by myself
But somehow they thought I would cope living in hell
Pretty blonde girl who was forced to grow up
In the blink of an eye, my childhood was over
Pose for the cameras, pose for me on the bed
The public didn't know what went on in my head
Young little sweetheart who never caused a fuss
I was so silent 'cause the thoughts had me disturbed
I felt so degraded, I felt so much hatred
Drunk away all my cares, washed away all the memories
I then found a new lover, a prince like no other
Bump continues on growing, I just keep on glowing
Flipped life around, all is well
Oh, what a story to tell
After all I've seen in this world, after all I've endured
Nothing hurts me anymore, gonna raise my shield and sword
You can throw what you like, I'll just spread my wings and glide
Thank you for all the bruises, I've learned how to take a knock
Held down for long enough, not I'm heading for the top
