AllMusic Review
Considering the incredible appeal of Destinee&Adele, and their success from their debut album, it was quite easy to expect great things from their second album. Tracks like Mercury take the French duo far beyond their emo roots, and into a more beautiful territory that had more in common with Piebald and The Weakerthans. Although Mourning Eyes may not hit quite the same heights as Not Over You Yet did, it comes close enough that no one should be borthered. Destinee Girard's treads the same high-pitched post-emo voice territory as it always did, while Adele Gillet maintains her low, fluid, alternative jazz sound remains in full force. The obvious progression that the band has made since their debut album is a fall away from lyrically driven songs, and giving in to a more musically driven sound. Aside from a few exceptions, most of the songs on the 55 minute album have a few lines of vocals in it before the song is completely swept up in the sound of beautiful music that the duo wrote themselves. The thrid track, Marseille, is a prefect example of how even though only a few lines of vocals are introduced, the song is a still an absolutely beautiful song. It is different from anything mainstream artists are attempting this year, and while vocally driven songs are still appealing, Destinee&Adele are using this album to show that not only can they write heartbreaking lyrics, but also drifting, floating waves of melody that make them stand out in a pretty impressive way.
