Joshua, for once, actually looks panicked and frightened. The shot from Erich doesn't help matters either. He usually carries himself in a far more arrogant, overly confident manner but it's a different story now. Joshua usually dramatises everything but this must be serious if not for the blood and gunfire than at least by the sheer look on his face alone. "Fucking murdering maniacs!" he calls out in a mix of shock and anger. Joshua remains at the door, barricading it with his arms outstretched. "This town. These people. I...I...saw something across the water and went over the investigate..." Joshua is clearly flustered as he stops and starts sentences and trains of thought.
"That's why you're soaked? Joshua what happened?!" Dustyn asks, worrying about Joshua and the fact that there now seems to be a mob after them. If Joshua could spit his story out to allow Dustyn to sympathise before they get murdered, it'd be great.
"There's this place across the water. They experiment on people they think may be synths. Torture, mad doctor, prison cells, the whole fucking bit!" Joshua speaks with such a heavy breathy voice, trying his hardest to pull himself together after everything that he's just endured. "I freed a woman who was in there but I had to take all those fuckers out!" Joshua says while nodding to the blood on his clothes. He raided and liberated this place all alone. Just then, the door bursts open, knocking Joshua forward a few paces. Ted Huntley stomps in but it only takes a second for Joshua to put a bullet in the guy's head.
"HOLY SHIT, WHAT IS GOING ON?!" Oscar yells, shutting the door over before any more mayhem and murder seeps in.
"He's part of it! This whole fucking town! This place, it's a trap! Billy, that test that you paid us out of, it's to detect synths, right?" Joshua asks Billy, who sheepishly nods in return. He too is starting to piece things together. Joshua continues, "And do you know what happens if you fail that test? You get captured and taken there. If not immediately, they'll get you when you least expect it. Compound, they call it. This white picket daydream town is fucking fake. It's one big trap. They're more anti-synth than fucking Myrna from the Surplus. I think it's why we got so many stares coming here. We unnerve them."
"Compound's real?" Sayyid says under his breath before looking up. He can see the eyes locked onto him, awaiting explanation for his muttering. "Well...I found a couple notes about this SAFE Test and one mentioned this Compound...just by name, nothing else. There was also this guy, some caravan master hanging around here asking about...some woman that had gone missing. Something about synths came up. The residents didn't like him much. It was all a bit fishy to me but...I didn't think it was that deep."
Just then, a shotgun shell is fired through the wood of the door, between Oscar's legs. Everyone moves back only to find out that the only way out is through the front. Before they can formulate a plan of attack, the door is kicked open again and the residents of the town stand there lead by their mayor, all armed with weapons.
"Joshua, you really know how to push people's buttons," quips Billy.
