Bruised is the fifth single from Andrea and is the last release before her debut album; 'In And Out Of Consciousness' drops later this month. The song was written and recorded in late 2013 in Pesky Studios, London and was the last track Andrea recorded for the album. Production came from the talented Emil Davis who has been a record producer for over a decade and is also exclusively signed by Five Pesky Kids. He also worked with Andrea in the past, when both of them were under contract with Kiss My Pop Records (which was later bought out by Pesky). "Bruised" is a pop rock ballad that takes the rockier element of Andrea's debut album to the extreme - being the most aggressive sounding track in places. The track is built around a two-volume arrangement meaning that the verses are quiet and the chorus is loud.
Lyrically, the track talks about a very controlling and violent relationship which helps Andrea grow thicker skin and eventually become numb to it all. The lyrics of the song use many metaphors, referring to Andrea as a piece of art and her lover as the creator. When she first met him, she hadn't really had an eventful life or any previous boyfriends - she was 'a blank canvas'. However, being so naive and inexperienced in love and life, her lover took advantage of this and manipulated her into being the 'perfect' and obedient girlfriend that he's always wanted. There is also hints that the lover is extremely jealous and possibly kept Andrea housebound or went with her everywhere;
"They can't look, can't touch, feel like I'm just property" helps to back up this assumption. The colours and paint that Andrea speaks about throughout the song represent bruises, scars and blood, showing that there was also a violent nature to the relationship. However, despite all of the torment and pain, Andrea thanks the now ex-lover for making her stronger and showing her how to deal with pain. The bridge of the song almost seems as if she's angering the 'creator' by stating that he is the reason she has toughened up and is no longer a pushover. She is now the perfect woman but is not his perfect woman.
Some controversy is bound to arise at the release of the song due to the well publicised turbulent relationship between Andrea and her husband, Billy Khan. It is often speculated that they have a violent and controlling relationship, resulting in their numerous break-ups. The couple are currently separated for a fourth time since getting together in early 2012. Many believe that this song is aimed at Billy and is a way of Andrea telling the world what went on between them. However, Andrea has stated that this track is not about him and was written when they were still together enjoying a happy relationship. It is just an unfortunate coincidence that the single will be released at the time of yet another one of their break-ups.
I fell into your arms as a blank canvas
Untouched, no story, no colour and without words
You changed my world
Painted and shaped me the way you wanted to
Still had no meaning other than to serve you
You changed my world
Took your time to finely craft me
They can't look, can't touch, feel like I'm just property
You shook my world
I've been so worked on and manipulated
Your hands worked their magic, now I'm shades of blue and red
You shook my world
But for all these scars, I can't thank you enough
You've prepared me for life, I can heal and toughen up
Another fist punches the wall, the cracks all start to show
Your work of art is crumbling, crumbling around you
You say that you love me, dedicated all your time to me
Baby, you don't even know the meaning, meaning of love
All those good intentions don't make you a better man
But one thing I thank you for is leaving me, leaving me bruised
I know how to deal with all the pain (bruised)
I'll step outside into the rain (bruised)
Let all the colours wash away (bruised)
Oh, oh, whoa-oh
Oh, oh, whoa-oh-oh
Thank you, thank you for leaving me bruisedListened to the critics pass on all of their remarks
Started to learn that this wasn't ri-ight
You broke my world
So I painted a heart, painted a pair of eyes
Saw you for what you were, no longer bli-ind
You broke my world
But for all these scars, I can't thank you enough
You've prepared me for life, I can heal and toughen up
Another fist punches the wall, the cracks all start to show
Your work of art is crumbling, crumbling around you

Oh, oh, whoa-oh
Oh, oh, whoa-oh-oh
Thank you, thank you for leaving me bruisedI am still a masterpiece, you should be so proud for helping me,
Helping me get to where I am
You built me up piece by piece, couldn't have done it without you
Thank you, thank you, oh thank you for leaving me
Bruised....bruised...bruised....oh yeah
Another fist punches the wall, the cracks all start to show
Your work of art is crumbling, crumbling around you
You say that you love me, dedicated all your time to me
Baby, you don't even know the meaning, meaning of love
All those good intentions don't make you a better man
