Title: "Bad Religion" Artist: Glamazon Genre: Synthpop Label: Studio60 Records
Glamazon returns with "Bad Religion", the lead single to her upcoming untitled seventh studio album, released on Studio60 Records. In recent years, Glamazon has gone from being one of the front-runners in solo female pop music to experiencing dwindling success due to lengthy breaks between records and her drastic change in music style. The moving Ashes to Ashes was an explosive mix of noise pop and shoegaze, a heartfelt record clearly written in response to the death of her boyfriend at the time, Eric Quillington. While the album received critical acclaim, its 1.5 million sales were lacklustre in comparison to her previous, The Beauty of Pain, an album that racked up sales of over 5 million worldwide. While her last release was unable to reach those dizzying heights, things seemed to be back on track with her sixth release, Riot Grrrl, an experimental pop album that pushed over 3.4 million. While this upcoming record will no doubt be compared to her past success, it's only a matter of time before we find out if she still has the fanbase to push her to that level once again.
With the premiere of "Bad Religion", it feels like a clean slate in Glamazon's career that truly shows her identity as an artist. At one point, we weren't sure whether she wanted to stick to being an alt-pop artist, but the new single seems to wipe away those doubts and her identity crisis. "Bad Religion" is classic Glamazon in every way imaginable, the lyrics couldn't be pulled off by anyone else and it feels like the true hit single we've been waiting for her to put out for a while now. It's an anthemic slice of dark pop music done right, flirting with those moodier sounds while never straying too far from the mainstream appeal that lies at the heart of the track. With its layers of slick 80s-esque synths and slightly echoed vocals, the song draws you in from the moment her distinctive voice presents the opening in an almost whisper, "You said I'll be damned if you're not twisted / That's why you always used to keep your distance". From that moment, we knew Glamazon was back on form. Let's face it, Glamazon is at her best when she's intimidatingly psychotic and waving her axe (and other sharp objects) around like a maniac.
"You can't break free from this bad religion" she assures in the song's criminally infectious chorus. It's one that won't be able to leave your head the moment you listen to it for the first time, providing listeners with one of the most catchy pop choruses of the year. "Can't turn your back on me now", she follows the line up calmly, she sounds completely in control and never too demanding in the way she presents the lyrics. I mean, who's got the guts to turn down a lady and her weaponry? With her new single being this much of an earworm, we hope no one will be turning their back on her, because this is her best chance at a hit single in a long time. She's back at her pop best and isn't scared of putting out something a little more commercial than her usual stuff, which we applaud her for. Only time will tell if she'll be dominating the charts or if the only thing she'll be slaying is a poor random man on the street...
Sounds like:
"Bad Religion"You said I'll be damned if you're not twisted That's why you always used to keep your distance There's secrets behind every appearance Lipstick to beauty up this evil spirit Let me get you stuck up in these hypnotic dreams Halo on the ground with your shirt and jeans Let me rough you up, I'll have you shoutin' Lord have mercy Frozen in a feeling so otherworldly
You're doin' anythin' but what you should And I've got the powers to corrupt the good C'mon, c'mon, let me turn you inside out C'mon, c'mon, let me flip your world upside down
You know you wanna shake this hold That I've got over you It's taken over your mind, body and soul And you're giving up all control You can't break free from this bad religion Can't turn your back on me now Beggin' for more like a sick addiction Can't turn your back on me now You can't break free from this bad religion
You can be a goner if you wanna Intoxicated like a shot of vodka But you just keep crawlin' on back for more Oh, you just keep knockin' back on my door I'm just your gateway to sin But you love my lips on your skin A highway to hell, a shortcut to pleasure Where we can just do whatever
Drink up that Holy water, boy Go and cleanse that soul before I tear it up Heart in my hands like a broken toy And I can hear it pumpin' blood All I can see is that it's all for me I'll make you say, baby, that's a guarantee
You know you wanna shake this hold That I've got over you It's taken over your mind, body and soul And you're giving up all control You can't break free from this bad religion Can't turn your back on me now Beggin' for more like a sick addiction Can't turn your back on me now You can't break free from this bad religion |
