When she was 10 years old, Dylan Shaw started expressing her dream of one day becoming a singer. When she was 16, she began writing her own songs in the comfort of her bedroom. Within a few years, she began to use the internet as a source to share her love of music with others, creating a YouTube channel and posting cover songs, as well as original songs of her own. It wasn't later until she created a PureVolume page, where she'd share her music with the world, allowing new fans to get her attention. Now with over 200,000 subscribers and 5 million views, the 20-year-old singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist is now at work on her debut EP.

"The most important thing for me is to make sure all my music comes from me, so it is genuine. Right now, I'm producing, mixing, and writing all of my music on my own. I want to connect and sound fresh and relateable. I'm young so I can definitely reach young people as well as be able to stand in line with the adults." Shaw's style of sweetly soaring vocals, gentle melodies and bold yet simple lyrics, took on a life of it's own. After learning to play guitar at the age of 12, Shaw quickly honed her musical talents by learning piano, drums, and anything else she could get her hands on. "I was taught guitar, just a few chords, but then I learned to play by ear. I was practicing all the time, no matter how bad it sounded, I kept going." Shaw shys away from big and fancy production, focusing on simplicity to show her natural singing abilities and raw emotions. Her song, "Road Map" was met with high praise from artists and critics alike. With the release of her debut single, "Why Can't We Be Friends?" debuting at #10, she had received her first ever top 10 hit with the song selling 265,000 units its first week.

The daughter of two musicians, her father a singer and bassist, her mother plays piano and saxophone, Dylan was raised with a deep love of music. "It was always encouraged and going after our dreams was the second thing, most important, in our family. I don't even think about it that much, I just do it. I naturally write music all the time, every day. It doesn't seem like a job or anything like that, it's not even a habit, it's just something I love to do and don't even have to think about," says Shaw, a Florida native of Puerto Rican, Jamaican, German, and Irish descent. While her list of influences goes on and on, Lauryn Hill, Jill Scott, Jeff Buckley, Justin Nozuka, Corinne Bailey Rae, Maxwell, Colbie Callait, etc, she also gives credit to gospel and spiritual music for her vocal work. "I sang all the time as a child and eventually I learned how to control, how to breathe, all of that. My parents always helped me, no matter what. They never told me to stop, only told me to keep going. I'd sing for hours and hours."

For much of her early- to mid-teen years, Dylan focused on honing her songwriting and experimenting with self-production with the help of her computer’s GarageBand app. During that time she began to gain a globe-spanning following through YouTube, thanks to her faithful posting of inspired covers and original songs that showcased her ethereal vocals and subtly confident guitar-playing. She got her first real taste of fame after she posted a cover of Deneil's "Living For The Weekend" went viral, now totaling up to 13 million views on Youtube. "I'm still in shock," says Shaw. "I mean you hear about people getting crazy amounts of views on there but you never really think it will ever happen to you, you know? It's amazing to know my video, my cover, has been watched over 13 million times, it's insane!"

Although the singer has yet to reach her full potential, she's continuing to grow a larger fanbase and leave fans in awe with her beautiful voice and storytelling lyrics. She has since been playing coffeehouses and small clubs in order to attract a larger audience, but if you ask her about fame, she'd much rather take years to reach the likes of Nadia Berry, Isabel, or Weekend. "I'm loving that it's progressive. It feels progressive. Each video gets a higher amount of likes or views and my songs seem to get higher but not all at once. I really want to work hard and not achieve anything overnight. I believe I can only get better if I really work at it and learn more along the way. I never want to wake up tomorrow and just be that 'It' girl already. I want to be like 5-10 years down the line and all my hard work adds up to success. Plus, I get to be with my fans. I'm learning as they are learning and it's a better bonding experience as opposed to just having all of these fans that I don't really know and they don't really know me."

Shaw says she's also in no rush to release material. "I never feel like I just have to release something in order to stay afloat or around. I like doing things at my own pace, so to speak. I'm really into self-reliability. Sometimes songs come like that, sometimes it takes weeks or months. I don't really have a problem with that. But I'm always writing. I write at least one line a day, or even just a word. I always have paper or either I write things in my phone." And when it comes to delivery, Shaw takes pride in just being herself and sharing her stories. "I'm always real with my songwriting. I don't really hide behind it or make up things. I speak and come from the heart because that's the only way I know how to write really. I mean I could write songs about things that never happened but I'd hate it. I'm always going to walk my own path and do my own thing, so it's always nice to know someone else can relate to me, not who people want me to be."

James Urie: It's shocking that you are not signed to a label. Your voice and lyrical abilities are outstanding. Actually, I rather you stay true and independent. Too many times we see promising acts completely change once they are signed to major labels. Who needs a label any way. I am not a big fan of pop and what not but this is quality. Great work Dylan :)

Dylan: Thank you so much :) I'm enjoying being on my own for right now, very free and inspiring. Maybe one day but for now being signed is like the last thing on my mind haha. But thank you for listening.

OOC: Nice work on these lyrics and Dylan as a whole. I love the whole independent thing she's doing and the slow build you have for her.

P.S. I wouldn't hide a whole song in a spoiler, tbh. I scrolled past it a few times before I even saw the show spoiler button and thought it was just a picture of artwork. That could be why people haven't seen it to comment on it lol.
