Title: “Pawn”Artist: Miami Featuring: Andrea From: Hotel Miami (2014) Release Date: July 26, 2014 Length: 3:57 Format: CD Single, Digital Download, Weekly Airplay Recorded: May 2014 – Half-Moon Studios, Las Vegas, Nevada Genre: Rap, Pop Label: Songs to Love and Die By Writer(s): Amelle ‘Miami’ Sebert Producer(s): Amelle Sebert, Christian Fallon, Andrea Khan “Pawn” is a song written and performed by American rap/hip-hop artist ‘Miami’, taken from her 2014 debut album ‘Hotel Miami’, it is the fifth single to be released by the rising musician since breaking into the industry in late 2013 and the song features the well-known popstar ‘Andrea’. The track was initially planned to be an entirely solo song when ‘Miami’ first finished writing the track in the studio, but after a couple of attempts to record the song completely solo she came to the decision to have somebody feature on the song in order to add a little more individuality to the song and in particular it’s chorus which dictated a powerful pop singer. She reportedly had three vocalists in mind for the collaboration and was lucky enough to get her first choice ‘Andrea’ to join her in the recording studio. The two then recorded the song together over a two day session in May, at this point the record had been completed with the exception of this track in particular, but the two finished up the song quick enough for it to be included on Miami’s debut album. The song comes in at three minutes and fifty-seven seconds and sees a flux and flow between rap and pop as Miami and Andrea’s differing styles combine well with each other. The track is seen as a tongue-in-cheek reflection on the entertainment industry and celebrities who are seemingly more interested in being famous as opposed to creating something meaningful and worthwhile, it’s chorus in particular highlights this, “I’ll do anythin’ for money, fortune, fame/I’ll be just another pawn/In this celebrity game/Just like a puppet/They can control me how they please/If it makes me money/I’ll get down on my knees.”, while Miami’s rap vocals also highlight the same theme, talking about doing whatever it takes to be the most famous person in the entertainment industry and not caring how they got there. It wouldn’t be the first time that ‘Miami’ has written a song of this nature, one of her previous singles ‘F*ckin’ Barbie’ seemed to indicate a similar topic but appeared to be from the perspective of a newcomer in the industry questioning why she’s competing with people who don’t appear to care about their work and connecting with an audience on an emotive level. The track will be released on July 26, 2014 as a CD Single, Digital Download and will be made available to Airplay, it was produced by Amelle, Christian Fallon and Andrea Khan, was recorded at Half-Moon Studios in Las Vegas, Nevada and will be released through ‘Songs to Love and Die By’. CULTURE UNCUT ARTICLEQuote:Miami and Andrea unite onstage at Warped Tour 2014!“So as the hugely successful 2014 Warped Tour moves in towards the final run of dates across the US, rap artist ‘Miami’ gave fans quite a pleasant and unexpected surprise last night in Virginia as she welcomed pop musician ‘Andrea’ on to the stage during her energy-fuelled set. The pair recorded a song together called ‘Pawn’ back in May which appeared on the rappers debut album later the next month, but the song had yet to be included in any of her setlists during this Warped Tour run of performances which surprised many. Many fans had expected the song to become one of the rising stars biggest spots during the tour and some had even expected it be used as a closer. Throughout the tour there had been chants for the song from the audiences, but Miami failed to deliver.
Up until last night’s show at Virginia Beach that is and to the surprise of the audience it wasn’t just ‘Miami’ singing over the studio recording of the song, no the audience went into somewhat of a frenzy as the rapper introduced ‘Andrea’ on to the stage, following the performance of a track called ‘Statement Of Intent’, the audience were encouraged to go completely silent and Miami teased them slightly as she slowly whispered the songs chorus into the microphone, the crowd instantly found their voice again and erupted into cheers as ‘Andrea’ walked onto the stage and embraced the rapper and of course sticking her tongue out at the audience in trademark fashion.
As the familiar beat came over the sound system the pair began to move around the stage, Andrea moving closer to the crowd in the front row as they attempted to reach out and touch her while Miami bolted around the stage delivering the opening rap verse of the song, as the chorus arrived and Andrea delivered it amongst a sea of cheers the pair moved around the edges of the stage seductively, thrusting their bodies towards the audience as the song dicates and as the chorus arrived once more, Andrea delivered it with aggression and there came a moment half-way through the song where Miami and Andrea begun to sing together but their voices were almost drowned out by the audience singing along in sync with the lyrics, “Haters gon’ hate/That’s what they say/But I never worried much/About that anyway.” and the audience were well and truly wrapped into a frenzy, perhaps proving that Miami was right to save the song for when Andrea could join in alongside her.” LYRICSPurple = Miami Red = Andrea Black = Together “Maybe I’m just askin’ what I need to do to make it I’m just lookin’ to strike it rich I don’t give a sh*t about artistic integrity I’mma do what it takes, even if I have to walk all over a b*tch Yeah, I’ll play these games if it means I’ll be sitting pretty at the top Whatever it takes just to see my album drop Gimme billboards and cover spreads Paparazzi want the money shot, I’ll open my legs If it means more sales then I’ll do that sh*t Money, fame, fortune I’ll be a motherf*ckin puppet, b*tch!
