Lucy Hale: Hello all, I'm Lucy Hale and welcome back to the 2014 Video Music Awards red carpet and I am here with the incredible, incomparable, pre-show performer, Reese Hollinsworth. So how are you doing this afternoon? And must I say, you look rather dashing today. The public very rarely see you like this.

Reese Hollinsworth: They rarely do, don't they? Well, thanks for the question and the compliment. I literally just walked out from rehearsal, took a shower, changed up and walked out here, so I'm a bit exhausted, but I'll be fine. I hope.

Lucy: I just realized that we have never talked before. How's your life right now?

Reese: Well, my album is pretty much done. About ninety or ninety-five percent. I already got a lot of tracks that I would want to have on the album and it really feels great, because last time I talked about the album, production barely even started and I was scared if we're ever gonna make the schedule. So, we really worked fast.

Lucy: So are we gonna be able to listen to this album soon enough?

Reese: Oh, I can't tell you that.

Lucy: Of course not. So, tell me a little bit about working with My Own Violence on this performance. But first, let me tell you one thing: I was outright shocked when Jeremy announced that you guys are gonna be working together at the VMAs.

Reese: Well, we're glad that we got that reaction out of you. Well, I have to say, working with Jeremy was amazing. Working with him was such a great pleasure. Can't wait to work with him again.

Lucy: Yeah, but how did he work? Was he fun? Was he serious?

Reese: Oh, he's just a fuzzy goofball. But that's a good thing, 'cause I'm a fuzzy goofball, too. And my backup singers and dancers, they're all fuzzy goofballs, too. So working with Jeremy was like working with a bunch of fuzzy goofballs, which I always did, anyway.

Lucy: Okay, so final question before you go backstage: who do you think is gonna win Video of the Year tonight?

Reese: Hmmm... I'm a bit undecided between Bey and Iggy. Because I feel like they're both great. Miley's win could be a bit of a stretch, but I'd say she has a chance. But it sucks that Ari didn't get nominated.

Lucy: Ari as in Ariana Grande?

Reese: Yeah, 'Problem' was phenomenal. I remember seeing it for the first time and I was like, 'Is this even real?'

Lucy: Okay, thank you, Reese. And we will see you again, just a few minutes later. Okay, bye.

Reese: Bye.

Lucy: And that is it for Reese. See him again just a few minutes as the pre-show starts 45 minutes before the VMA ceremony. Catch us again.

OOC - Clampdown, you're up!

Lucy Hale: Okay, we are officially 45 minutes away from the VMA ceremony, which means the VMA pre-show is finally set to begin. I can’t tell you enough how honored I am to host the VMA pre-show. But, without any further ado, let’s welcome out our first pre-show performer. He’s taking the world by storm with a vocal range that even Miss Mariah Carey herself would envy. And here’s a plus: he can dance while singing too. So let’s give it up for the incredible Reese Hollinsworth.

[The crowd cheers at the sentence. The audience is hiding the famous VMA pre-show stage: black with four spotlights on each corner without much else. Reese is standing near a white piano (which is played by Jeremy Salazar - My Own Violence), having his strawberry blonde hair hanging down his shoulders and donning a black-and-white-striped bodysuit with lace going up the middle; and white knee-length high-heeled boots. He holds up the microphone and starts singing.]
As soon do we forget how we felt
Dealing with emotions that never left
Playing with the hand that we were dealt in this game
Maybe I'm the sinner, and not a saint
Gotta stop pretending what we ain't
Why we pointing fingers anyway? We're all the same
Break up, make up
Total waste of time
Can we please make up our minds?
And stop acting like we’re blind
Cause if the water dries up
And the moon stops shining
Stars fall, and the world goes blind
Boy you know I'll be savin' my love for you, for you

[Reese stops, looking at Jeremy and smiling towards him, then diverts his gaze towards the audience in front of him. They cheer loudly, Reese breaking out into a wide grin at the sight. He then calms himself down, holds the microphone to his mouth and says, "Hello, VMAs.” He then continues singing, starting from the chorus.]
Cause you're the best mistake I've ever made
But we hold on, hold on
There's no pot of gold in the rainbows we chase
But we hold on, hold on

[Electronic sounds start to come out of the speaker, prompting Jeremy to step out of the piano chair and towards behind his DJ table. After that, Reese shouts to the audience, “Everybody, let’s give it up for My Own Violence!” They both smile at each other and then Reese returns to singing.]
If you want it, take it
I should have said it before
Tried to hide it, fake it

I can't pretend anymore
[A duo of male dancers walk onto the stage, joining Reese. They start dancing an intricate hip-hop choreography, while Reese stays calm, keeps belting out the pre-chorus. The audience looks out in awe when both dancers do back-flips behind Reese. The singer lets out a mysterious grin when the pre-chorus ends.]
I only want to die alive
Never by the hands of a broken heart
I don't wanna hear you lie tonight
Now that I've become who I really am

[All dancing activity halts as loud synths sounded from the speaker and Reese sings the bookending chorus of the song. After singing the first half of the chorus, the music returns to its electronic self and Reese and his dancers dance to the music while the singer sings the final end of the chorus. The electronic sounds which began the song now ends the song.]
This is the part when I say I don’t want it
I'm stronger than I've been before
This is the part when I break free
Cause I can't resist it no more
This is the part when I say I don’t want it
I'm stronger than I've been before
This is the part when I break free
Cause I can't resist it no more

[The opening sounds of the next song remind us of the disco era, now finished with a touch of violin. When the intro finishes, we see two female backup singers which had already emerged onto the stage. Reese starts singing the first verse of the song, while the backup singers correspond to their part.]
Baby I got love for thee so deep inside of me
I don’t know where to start
I love you more than anything
But the words can’t even touch what’s in my heart
When I try to explain it I be sounding insane

Words don’t ever come out right
I get all tongue tied (and twisted)
I can’t explain what I’m (feeling)
And I say baby baby, baby
(Baby I)
[In a surprising twist of events, the two male dancers who were there for the previous song returns to the stage, showing impressive footwork as Reese sings the chorus and joins them in the dancing as well. And, surprisingly, the backup singers also join in on the dancing. And although the dancing involved a lot of jumping, Reese keeps his voice stable and powerful as he belts the high F#5 at the peak of the chorus. The F#5 comes around again when Reese exclaims on the last word of the first chorus.]
Ooh baby, ooh baby, my baby(Baby I)
Ooh baby, baby I
All I’m trying to say is you’re my everything, baby

(But everytime I try to say it, words they only complicate it)
Baby, baby, baby, baby
Baby I

[His head voice swings into action as he runs a riff at the end of the key change. The head voice vocal run goes out again right before the chorus. The footwork starts again as Reese starts to sing the higher chorus. The song ends with the disco-esque sounds at the start of the song and all dancing stops.]

[The familiar saxophone melody starts and the two dancers guide Reese to the steps which connect the higher stage to the red carpet, and towards the large empty space on the red carpet reserved for the pre-show. The second they walk onto their spot, Reese starts belting out the first verse of the hit of the summer. The two dancers start to warm up for the upcoming choreography as Reese belts out the pre-chorus, successfully pulling G#5 exclamation at the end of the pre-chorus. The scene sounds relatively silent (save for cheering from the audience) as the chorus consists mainly of whispering and low tones, in contrast to the belting in the first verse.]
Baby, even though I hate ya, I wanna love ya (I want you)
And even though I can't forgive ya, I really want to (I want you)
Tell me, tell me baby, why can't you leave me
‘Cause even though I shouldn't want it, I gotta have it (I want you)
Head in the clouds, got no weight on my shoulders
I should be wiser and realize that I've got

(One less problem without ya, I got one less problem without ya, I got one less problem without ya)
I got one less, one less problem
(One less problem without ya, I got one less problem without ya, I got one less problem without ya)
I got one less, one less problem
[Saxophone sounds greet the sound of great cheering from the crowd surrounding the performers as the Reese does the signature Ariana Grande arm-raising dance during the short musical interlude. He then belts out the second verse, hitting every single note correctly. The same goes for the pre-chorus, as well.]
I know you're never gonna wake up, I gotta give up (but it's you)
I know I shouldn't ever call back, or let you come back(but it's you)
Every time you touch me, and say you love me
I get a little bit breathless, I shouldn't want it, baby (but it's you)
Head in the clouds, got no weight on my shoulders
I should be wiser and realize that I've got

(One less problem without ya, I got one less problem without ya, I got one less problem without ya)
I got one less, one less problem
(One less problem without ya, I got one less problem without ya, I got one less problem without ya)
I got one less, one less problem
[Due to the absence of a rapper on site and ready to perform, the music skips the rap verse and onto the final pre-chorus and chorus, starting with head voice vocal runs. He then belts out the pre-chorus, finally hitting the peak of the pre-chorus and going even higher for a vocal run, finally ending at a soprano C (C6). The chorus jumps right into the saxophone-included part with several ad-libs. Reese’s set ends with a complex riff after singing the catchphrase of the song, “I got one less, one less problem”.]

My Own Violence's VMA Performance and Interview:

UserPostedImage

Interviewer: Hi there, I'm here with Jeremy Salazar who will be playing a set with Reese Hollinsworth very shortly then, he will be doing a set under his side project, My Own Violence. How are you, Jeremy?

Jeremy: I'm doing pretty well, I just got here a few hours ago, I live three hours away from here so it wasn't too hard to get here.

Interviewer:Good, I'm glad your drive here was pleasant. Are you excited to be playing tonight?

Jeremy: Oh yeah, big time. Reese asked me if I wanted to play with him at the VMAs and I'm like: Yeahhhhh! Miley Cyrus twerked there! I'm so there! Then he told me he could get me a performance spot. Then I got kind of nervous and I was like: I've really got to step up my game performance wise. So I have three completely new songs and some new ideas for the crowd.

Interviewer: You're a pretty obscure artist. The VMAs will get you huge, what do you think about this?

Jeremy: As much as it would be awesome to be touring worldwide and being huge and rich and famous and shit. I don't know if I could handle that. I don't really want to be that big. My music isn't for massive venues, that's something I'm really afraid of is that no one will get into me because I'm not playing a small club or a basement.

Interviewer: Right, I could see why you wouldn't want the fame and publicity. So, what are you going to be bringing to the table.

Jeremy: Lights, dancing, and a loud set. I'm turning this shit up to eleven.

Interviewer: Will you be as energetic as you claim during Reese's set?

Jeremy: Probably not, I mean, I don't want to steal the show from him or anything and I don't want to be that DJ in the back violently head banging.

Interviewer: What other work have you done with Reese?

Jeremy: I may or may not have done some production. I've been spending a lot of time rehearsing with him. He's a really rad guy, very friendly.

Interviewer: So I've heard, turning a different direction, what got you into music.

Jeremy: Well, I found a blank tape so I started recording on it but when I played it back, I realized it had spoken word shit recorded by my dad, I began focusing on that and began manipulating the shit out of it to make him say swear words and then I played a toy Casio over it. I produced five of them and sold them at my high school.

Interviewer: That's interesting, I've never heard of a musician starting out like that. Who are your influences?

Jeremy: Uhh, haha, my dad's poetry. No, really. I'm heavily influenced by Brian Eno. He was my hero growing up.

Interviewer: Alright, thank you for your time. I'd like to know more but you're supposed to start setting up and sound checking in a couple of minutes.

Jeremy: Thank you, again. My set is going to be a blast, I'm really excited and I hope the crowd is as excited as I am.

An empty DJ's table is seen on the VMA's stage. The lights dim except for two screens on the DJ table, a low drone synth begins playing and Jeremy Salazar walks up on stage and begins playing his first song, a new song called "Put Up A Fight (Put Down Peace.)" He begins headbanging in cadence to the song. Halfway through the song, he stops playing the drums plays a sample of a person singing the words "If you know you're right put up a fight and march out." He begins clapping to it and encourages the audience to do the same. The drums come back and he starts swaying his body left and right in tempo the song as well as bobbing his head left and right. He cuts the song and goes into a spoken word sample, he leans into the DJ set and jumps as the goes back into the "If you know you're right" sample. He starts headbanging and playing air drums to the song. He goes into another spoken word sample and ends the song.

"Hi, my name is Jeremy Salazar. This is my project My Own Violence, I'm from San Luis Obisbo, California. And this is all going to be on an album sometime soon. This next song is called Bashing His Head Into A Wall Until He Bleeds. For this, we're going to have some fun. We're going to have a dance party. Can everyone back up so there's a huge hole in the middle of the crowd? Everyone back the fuck up. Okay, I think that's big enough. So, we get this guy wearing orange sunglasses and a white tanktop and this guy over here wearing a Sonic Youth T-Shirt in the middle of the pit. Good good, alright, so what we're going to do is we're going to have a dance competition.

So orange sunglasses will dance on his side of the pit and Sonic Youth will dance on his. And you're going to get your side to mimic your dance, and when everyone's gotten into the groove, get just some random person, seriously, it can be someone you've never seen in your life before and get them into the pit to replace you, the new person has to make up a new dance. So on and so fourth. And the people in the way back, hi! Can you guys see me okay? Probably not very well without the jumbotron, huh? Can we get the jumbotron showing the dance pit, please?" The jumbotron changes to the pit. "Good, thank you! Wave to the jumbotron! So now that you guys can see what's going on, feel free to join in. Let's get this party started!"

Jeremy goes into the song and the two begin dancing calmly. "Good! Use your legs! They're usually forgotten about at shows." He grabs his microphone and begins singing the lyrics to the song.

My heart beats so slow, I barely notice it.
My back barely pressed against the wall
My body feels so frail that it could break apart.

My love is a garbage can
As I wash up on the shores of death
My love is a garbage can

Jeremy goes into an instrumental break "This is where it gets fast, I'd suggest switching!" He starts building up to a crazy dance himself as the song builds up the an intense part. "And now!" He jumps up and begins furiously headbanging as two new participants begin wildly dancing. He stands on his table holding up one of his midi controllers high in the air and behind his head. The song has a rest and he sets it down and does a backflip off of his table and grabs his microphone.

[b] Only you can make me feel alive
Only you can make me love my life
Only you can make me feel alive
Only you can make me love my life

My body feels so frail that it could break apart.

The song becomes less intense. "You guys are great, especially the people in the back you guys are really getting into and I love it!" He grins and begins dancing again. The participants switch as the song becomes intense again and Jeremy begins dancing wildly.

[b]Only you can make me feel alive!

Jeremy smiles "That was fun, wasn't it? You want to do it again?" The crowd cheers loudly "Good, so do I, I saw a lot of great dancers. This is my last song, it's definitely been an honor to stand where Miley Cyrus twerked." The song starts with detuned chords "So get some new people into the pit if you're going to continue the dance competition. A kick drum starts playing and he starts clapping to it. Thirty seconds in, a lead begins playing and he begins dancing by holding his arms up and moving left and right. Towards the end of the song he grabs the microphone. Okay, the team on my left. Please get your guy out of there and don't add another guy. Right, just keep doing what your doing. He loops the main lead and jumps down into the pit. He stands off with the guy on the other side and he begins dancing wildly in front of his group. He begins clapping as he dances encouraging everyone to clap. As the crowd establishes the clap dance he transitions it into a foot dance. He leans on two people and climbs on top of them walking on various people's shoulders to get back onto the stage. He rolls back onto the stage and ends the song. "Thank you guys! That ruled. Until we meet again I guess." He waves as he walks off stage and a team of roadies tear down his equipment.
