 THE TITANS
FATALITY (K.O.)
"Fatality" is the second single of the The Titans' 5th studio album "The Matrix". The song was written by the whole group together and was only produced by Den Walnut. It is officially released on 1 November 2014 after being premiered on 2 October 2014 on the group's official youtube channel.
"Fatality" was a song recorded around the beginning of 2014 and it was first written by Den Walnut and Tanya Stephenson for another record apparently and was called "Never Gonna Stop", but the group eventually decided to rework the song and use it as the second single off "The Matrix" album. The first version of the song was slightly different according to Den who said; "At first the song had this heavy beat that it sounded very angry. When we wrote it we weren't looking for that kind of 'hard' sound, so we scrapped it but when we found the demo again and heard it back, we had a few ideas on how to make it sound a little more like a Pop song."
To give new ideas to the Titans and make them rework the song was actually the famous videogame Mortal Kombat according to the group, which wrote new lines for the song together putting a lot of references to the videogame.
The lyrics of the song, in fact, talk about fighting someone you care about and what inspired in writing the song was Tanya Stephenson's hard breakup in January 2013 with Zack Smith as she said, "Breaking up with Zack was hard for me for many reasons. I was angry and I needed a way to calm down, so Den helped me writing this song with me."
Speaking of the sound of the song, Laurence Vega said "'Fatality' is awesome because it's fun and empowering, it sort of gives you the feeling you get when you're angry with someone but not the negative one though, only the one that makes you feel stronger, 'cause that's what we want to do with our songs and especially our new album - we want people to feel better."
The song begins with a synth piano playing a catchy string of notes, followed by some Pop drums that begin to give a good rhythm to the song with the bass, while Laurence's voice can be heard saying the first line, like the Mortal Kombat videogame even though Laurence's accent can be easily recognised.
Then the drums get a little more rhythmic with some loud claps and Martina and Joey sing the first verse, both sounding sassy and empowering in their own ways: Martina with her softer vocals (which show how her improvements as she seems to have extended her vocal range a little) and Joey with his louder and more like a rap kind of vocals.
At the end of the verse all the Titans sing together the next lines as if they were joining their forces and were getting ready to fight, which is exactly what the song is about. The pad in the background also increases this feeling with his melody as it joines the rest of the instruments and takes the song to the best part, which is the chorus where the Titans all harmonize their vocals perfectly, sounding loud and strong. During the chorus other minor instruments join the background giving a stronger sound to main melody of the synth piano. After the first chorus, another verse comes in when the beat has slowed down and Laurence repeats his opening line. In the second verse it's Den and Tanya singing just like Martina and Joey but this time with their different vocals: Den with a deep but strong voice (which shows a better technique than before) and Tanya sounding as loud and pleasing as she usually does.
Then as the pre-chorus and the chorus repeat in the same way, the drums suddenly stop playing with the other instruments, leaving a few pads and a minor piano playing in the background. This time all the Titans sing a line each with calmer vocals adapting to the melody of the instruments and as soon as Laurence ends with his lines, Tanya screams taking the song back to another pre-chorus, followed by the last chorus.
