"This highly recognizable figure, Aubrey Mikkel, didn't exactly have the same rise to stardom as some of our favorite artists currently in the industry. As you may know, the controversial 24 year old rose to stardom as the first winner of popular t.v series Starfactory. When she was take part of the series, week in week out Aubrey set herself apart from the competition becoming one of the consistently excellent performers. Mikkel, even became Star of the week on the show despite her harshly cocky and often brash attitude and demeanor throughout each episode. Singing her way until the very end, Mikkel duked it out with Casey Johnson and made it to the season finale of the show and in the end Aubrey Mikkel won the talent competition. Aubrey then signed with North Hill Records after the show had wrapped up. It was after the show that the real stardom would come to this Toronto born songstress. Her debut single, Partner In Crime became a massive hit topping charts around the world and certifying Aubrey to be a force to reckon with away from the t.v show. The success soon continued to come Mikkel's way as a chain of hits followed. With tracks like Fire's Burning and Savior, and a massive debut album "Victorious" followed by an award win, there's no wonder that everyone knows who Aubrey Mikkel is. After Aubrey's debut, she entered the studio to work on her new album which is currently finalized according to the singer herself. The albums singles so far released have been Victimized, and Ashes In The Rain which were both massive records but experienced releases in early 2014. Since then however, Mikkel seemingly stepped away from music and took an unannounced hiatus from music and spent most of her activity away from the charts. Luckily for us, Aubrey is back with a brand new single "Photoshop Free" and she is here to talk with us briefly and give us a premiere of the new single. Ladies in gents!"
(Thanks to John for helping me out with these questions :))
And she is here with us! It is our pleasure to have you here, thank you so much for joining us Aubrey for this MTV exclusive. How is everything? What's up MTV! And everybody watching at home. Everything is good, thank you for asking.
It's been three years since you won Starfactory, did you expect to become as big as a star you are today? Is that even a question? YES! I knew it. I said it from the very start. Look today, I'm the only winner of the show and really the only one that's standing from the show. Tells you something, doesn't it?
So last night you sent the twitter world into a frenzy after posting the artwork to your new single, Aubrey what can you tell us about the new single? Yes! The new single. It's hot, it's called "Photoshop Free" as you may know and it's the type of record that basically can apply to where we are right now in technology and every day life. Everybody obsessed with making themselves an illusion and not faulting who and what they really are. You seen some of the photoshop fails? People really be trying hard to block away their imperfections and it makes them fake, you should be proud of who you are...so I decided to write a song song about it, it's as simple as that and it's brilliant because no one has written about this before...ever. Everyone's the same ole shit all the time so I wanted to switch it up, give something...how could I say..give something very modern so the new single is very current. Many of the songs on the new album are serious, look at Victimized and Ashes In The Rain....Photoshop Free is for the younger crowd, it's fun.
They know how it is when they see a chick in a picture then in person and you be like, did I get catfished? When you hear this you're gonna be thinking about all those people who edit the shit out of their photos. I did this for all the real chicks who embrace their imperfections. I hooked up with two underground producers WondaGurl and Dynasty so we could create a sound that's not really hard. It's hard, and really trap influenced so I know it's gonna light up the clubs. It's just that type of record.
So what does Photoshop Free exactly mean? It means that you're not fake and you don't try to change yourself for nobody. You are perfect okay with your flaws. Like me. What you see is what you get.
As an artist, How do you feel about the use of photoshop and photo retouching being so popular and certainly a routine? I've said this before and I don't think it's necessary and it's sometimes demeaning to certain people. It is apart of our culture but that doesn't mean it right. I think people should get what they see. You a big girl, should be no reason why they are shaving half your body off. It's creates an illusion. I don't like the fact that pictures, even of us celebrities are edited today but I'm not finna change the world, I make hits. Why not make a hit about how much I don't like it and how much it's used? Ace.
Do you feel like you've matured more with this new music what are some differences you think we'll hear compared to before? My music has always been mature, what you mean? But with Photoshop Free, it's not about that. It's actually immature if you think about it. It's fun and the lyrics are funny. Usually, my songs are dead serious but I wanted to change it up and for my return. I wanted to give the aubtourage something they can get ratchet to in the clubs. As for the album as a whole, it's much better than my debut and that was nearly perfect. But this is going to be the best R&B album released this year. Sonically it will give you a mixture of different vibes and attitudes and it has that authentic R&B feel, and not forced.
The fans have been waiting a while for this this new album, the entire Aubtourage want to know when can they expect it? This summer.
Are there any artists that you'd like to collaborate with or already called to collaborate with on this album? No, not really. I already got Kidd Amaze and Atlas on the album. I might have one more artist on the album but that's bout it. The album is about me, not a whole bunch of pointless features.
What has the recording process on this album been like so far any differences. similarities? This time I really took my time. The first album I was rushing to snatch weaves *laughs* cause after the show I wanted to capitalize. Now that I am established and there's really no one in my lane that is threatening of my position in the top tier, there was no pressure to push the new album out so quickly. When it comes to my devotion about how the record comes out sounding, that's all the same. I'm still straight to business and take what I do very seriously but yeah, this time it's a lot more concentration on taking my time and having everything come out exactly how I want it to sound.
After taking a little hiatus from the music industry what are your thoughts coming back into it? Attack and destroy.
And what have you been doing since you took a break from the industry? I never took a 'break' cause I didn't go anywhere. I essentially was focusing on recording the album with no real distractions. The thing with me is that I am a perfectionist so if I don't feel like its right, I will go back and start again. I scrapped a lot of the songs from the album cause even though they were better songs then what we hear on the radio today, it just wasn't up to my standard and that's normal for me.
What do you want your fans to take away from this new single? To embrace yourself for who you are. Too many fakes and illusions. It's more than just about editing your photos, its about being who you are and being proud your imperfections and flaws because if you are airbrushing your arms and you're not a model, since thats part of that culture, then you are clearly not being who you are and showing it because when you get in person who you gonna look? Like a damn idiot. So save it. Be you.
While we're on the topic of fans what do you think the fans' reaction to this single will be? They will love it. I know they will, everyone knows what I'm talking about in this track. Plus it's crazy, the production and my performance of course.
And I know this is looking far ahead but can we expect a tour after the album is released? Yeah, going on a world tour later this year. It's gonna be a smash
Thank you so much for joining us Aubrey have a great day and good luck with your new music! Thank you
And now the premiere of Aubrey Mikkel's new single 'PHOTOSHOP FREE'
Title: Photoshop Free Length: 3:20 Genre: Trap, R&B, Hip Hop Songwriers: A.Mikkel Producers: WondaGurl, Deputy From The Album:No Love Lost
World Premiere Date: March 31st, 2015 Digital Release Date: April 5th, 2015 Airplay Release Date: April 5th, 2015 Streaming: March 31, 2015 Record Label: Freedom Music Video: TBA
"Photoshop Free" is a single released by musician Aubrey Mikkel taken from her upcoming album "No Love Lost" which is slated for a summer 2015 release. Photoshop Free was written by Aubrey Mikkel and was produced by underground producers WondaGurl and Deputy. The single will hit radio stations on April 5th, alongside digital retailers the same day and is billed as the third official single from the Mikkel's long awaited album and will be Aubrey's first release since last years very early release in "Ashes In The Rain". Photoshop Free will be distributed by Aubrey's current label, FREEDOM. Photoshop Free is a rather brash and empowering record penned by Aubrey Mikkel and talks about the use of editing tools in photo editing websites to create an illusion that is clearly not yourself. The song was penned in late 2014 and was recorded some months after when Aubrey heard a sent in demo by up and coming producer WondaGurl that she fell in love with. The initial bassline and beat was created by WondaGurl with Deputy being called on to produce the breakdown bridge and took a few days to record and finalize. When choosing this single, Aubrey stated that she wanted to release the track as something fun and rather different in terms of topic and emotion of her previous record, and that Photoshop Free is something for her fans to get ratchet to, something that Aubrey hasn't done much in her career. The single's artwork was revealed by Aubrey Mikkel on March 30th, 2015 via twitter and sent her fans and websites alike into a frenzy as this would be the first time Aubrey would release a new single in a year. The single was premiered on March 31st, 2015 via MTV World Premiere and is currently available for pre-order on itunes.
Musically, Photoshop Free is a trap and r&B concoction that starts right off from the very start as Aubrey proclaims her listens from the early stages murmering "Ayoo-Ayoo" over an eerie backing beat before the song, in it's early stages surges into the chorus that is clearly made to make clubs and arenas roar as it oozes exuberant cockiness and the entire track does so over the pounding chorus Aubrey sings about being photoshop free as her highly distinguishable voice prowls over the pounding chorus. Following the chorus, Aubrey gives us her brash story proclaiming herself in the early lines as being "as original as they come" and no dodge and burn effect, making it clear that she is taking shots at photoshop and editing software that clearly changes peoples appearances, through clever pin points on certain tools on the program. Ouch! As part of the pre-hook Aubrey makes it adamant by pulling in social networks like Instagram that also offers editing tools and calls it, along with Photoshop a "liar" and turns people from a 5 (meaning not too pretty) to a nine (gorgeous) in 'point two' seconds and calls her perfections perfect even if they do not abide by certain people. The pounding beat continues on as Aubrey shines vocally as she makes each of the lyrics legible and easy to digest over the hard production. Before the next chorus, Aubrey calls herself a freak show and once again a photoshop free magazine and tells us to read up on her since she is "full of reality". The chorus then comes back on offering us a another expedition of track and r&B sizzling backing beat and Aubrey's vocals. With the second verse, Aubrey gets at the fakers and calls herself real and that she doesn't need any liquidation (liquifying tool) and explains that you either love it or hate it. Following another pre hook and chorus Aubrey then gets at the fact that only thing that is perfect is on paper and that when it flies away, people dodge and burn and patch it up, which is photoshop tools. Another chorus is then heard followed by the bridge where Aubrey brashly calls out girls who use these editing tools to create an illusion and encourages people who aren't good looking "flawed" to own up to it and take a picture, and to join the photoshop free union of people who are real and are okay with their flaws because no one is perfect. The bridge as this breakdown that is rather spoken out as opposed to singing in this part. When its done, a backing roars once more as Aubrey calls herself 'That Freak Show' before singing a bit more as the song rides out.
"Photoshop Free" is a lot more than just a club banger about the use of editing tools to change your appearence, but a record in which encourages you to embrace your flaws no matter what they are and not to create an illusion for the people sorrounding you. Be more confident, be photoshop-free."
OOC: Kay, so if you aren't familiar with Photoshop then you might be alittle confused by some of the lyrics. So 'dodge&burn" is an effect used on photoshop that adds shadows and such to pictures to correct major imperfections as is the same with the "patch tool" but the patch tool is not so natural looking lol and can get rid of anything you want in the picture. Liquidation or Liquify is a tool used to slim certain parts of the picture down and could be used to slim parts of the body. So when Aubrey singles paper fly away, perfection is only on paper but you can dodge and burn and patch it up to come close to it since everyone is so consumed with looking perfect. Thought I could make it a bit easier to understand if you had trouble :P
